I had something similar happen. It was a compaq laptop, pretty shitty, but I got it cheap. Battery would last all of 20 minutes.
My family have a pc store but when I had ubuntu installed they thought I'd broken windows because my sister wanted to use the laptop.
They took it away, and I couldn't use the family computer either.
Luckily she's gone now and my family are reluctantly accepting that I may actually understand computers.

Funniest part was last year putting a Fedora live usb on the back of my dad's computer. He doesn't understand Linux and thought I'd broken it so he raged and smashed it and threw it all away.
