/g/, need your help.

This is the hard drive from a laptop that belonged to a very famous author... yes, you've all probably heard of him if you're in the english-speaking world and one of his books are part of curriculum of most HS's across US.

Anyway, I am friends with one of his kids and I they found this HDD in one of the boxes that belonged to their father. They are certain that this is his drive because when they looked at his old computer, it lacked HDD. They are hoping this HDD contains all the drafts and ideas from his unpublished works.

I said I'd help and try to retrieve all the documents off this thing. However, I have no idea what would I need to do it.

Can someone offer some ideas? What kind of an interface is this? What do I need to use to get it mounted on a modern computer? Thanks for any hints!
>>
IDE to SATA adapter is what you need
>>
>>51432100
that's an IDE? I had no idea they made laptop drives with the same interface as the 3.5" ones.

Any ideas about software I'd need?
>>
>>51432164
It should mount like any other hard drive, as long as the computer can read the filesystem
>>
Who is it?
>>
>>51432164
they did this because there was no better option, it is literally ide mini-fied, same pinouts. these small drive ide pins are brittle as shit, be careful.

the ide to sata adapters don't work on half the motherboards I try. I'd instead recommend the mini ide / ide / sata to usb external cords. You will need no software if it was formatted in fat32 or ntfs

if the drive letter doesn't show up use diskmgmt.msc or use linux
>>
>>51432062
you should install gentoo on it.
>>
Try buying the appropriate adapters/wires you need and then plugging it in.
>>
>>51432198
I'd rather not say. He passed away less than 10 yrs ago but he still has a big following. I don't want to get anyone's hopes up.

It would be amazing if we found some his works on there that are nearly complete or some other ideas. His laptop is in some museum right now so it can't be easily acquired to plug this HDD in.

>>51432199
thanks for the tip! I think my mobo might have IDE adapter but I'm not sure. I def don't have a ribbon cable handy.

See that little apple logo in the corner? I think he used Macs.

>>51432211

>>

if it was apple it will be formatted as HFS, quickest way to read this is ubuntu or any linux distro then connect the adapter you get.

You want to image the drive using dd_rescue ie GNU ddrescure
That's the first thing you ABSOLUTELY MUST do, then you can run Photorec to get shit out of the image, or w/e
BUT BEFORE ANYTHING IMAGE THE DRIVE WITH GNU DDRESCUE

I have heard of amateur/semi-professional HDD recovery. here's the idea.

>fabricate a clean room
get a wall socket powered HEPA filter. empty out a closet or tiny bathroom in your home. vacuum the ever loving shit out of it, and wash down the ceiling, floor, walls, and inside of the door. feed the filter hose into it and let it run for a few days until everything is dry. get a few pairs of sealed paper clothes. take a shower, and put one on. then line the entire room with plastic trash bags. seal off every crevice or seam between bags with duct tape. be VERY thorough. then reconnect the HEPA filter and let it run for another couple of days.

>operation
after all this, you're ready to operate. that's about as close to a clean room as you'll get in a home environment. buy another HDD of the same model. carefully disassemble both in your clean room. take out the magnetic disks from the broken hard drive, and install them into the good hard drive. it might be worthwhile to get a few of these hard drives so you can practice the procedure a few times before doing it for real. be careful to install the discs exactly as they were oriented in the broken hard drive. Also be careful to make sure there are NO foreign particles on the discs (that's the point of the clean room). the smallest thing can fuck the whole thing up forever, and may even cause a crash (rip up the magnetic media).

this is all probably an extreme solution, but it really depends on how precious the data is. if it's really as important as you say, you should just give the drive back to the family and tell them to ship it off to a professional data recovery firm who will charge them a few tens of thousands of dollars, but will do a far better job than ever you could.
>>
>>51432755
But mccourt has his own museum. And Clancy died just 2 years ago. OP wouldn't have said "within 10 years" if he was talking about someone who died 2 years ago. None of his books are even popular in American HS curriculums right now. It's not Tom Clancy, it's clearly mccourt.

Yep. It's coming from USB. They actually give you a powerbrick and the IDE/SATA power cables for disks that USB can't power. With 2.5" IDE, USB power is enough it seems.

I've noticed that if you want to read 2.5" SATA drives, you need separate power.

Windows has it all. I've tried it on an old IDE drive I found at work and I read it fine.

Yep. HFS+ to be exact. We managed to mount it under Linux with Fuse.

HDD works fine! I looked around it's full of files and formats that I've never come across (Mac specific). His Documents folder is chock-full of directories and files in various formats. It also seems he used Eudora for email.

Now that I know it works, I'll go and buy a Mac so I can mirror the disk properly.

I mean if you have money to burn I guess you could just buy a Mac, if you can't borrow one of somebody.
>>
>>51440432
oh, you got it reading, nevermind this then.

I'd try making a full disc image backup, on the SECTOR level, just in case. Not just a copy of the files, but a full sector level hdd dump. There might be more recoverable data in there, if you try using undelete or so.
>>
>>51440392
Note that some applications edit the files when you just open them up, so you should be making a backup at first and THEN open shit from the backup (or even better: create a backup, archive it, then make a copy of it and open files from that copy - so you retain the original files from the hdd in a time bubble).
>>
>>51440470
That's what we're doing right now. Mirroring it with dd.

>>51440440
Here's the thing though. My buddy says these are PowerPC applications. Even if I get a Mac, I need a way to run old stuff. After some googling, OS X doesn't support PowerPC anymore.

Maybe if I buy old Mac? It'd be pretty slow.. I'd prefer to run it on a new one.

Anyone with some ideas?
>>
>>51440530

Some of the applications were probably updated to run on Intel Macs, but you'd have to check for sure. I still don't really know what the file formats are since you only gave me vague descriptions of them, so I can't give much insight. Some of them you might just be able to open with Preview.

You could just get an old eMac or something though, at least it'll be cheap and then you could probably plug it in properly with real IDE if it has a spare slot for one. Then maybe convert or copy the documents worth keeping to something more up to date.
>>
>>51440612
>probably updated to run on Intel Macs
That's a good point!

Here's the plan... I'll get the image once it'd done copying and open it under windows and then I'll try opening files and classifying them and I'll try to see what formats they're in. I'll then see what can open all these various formats.

This buddy of mine has a lot more experience with this and he says that a lot of these files probably have something called "resource forks" and that I won't be able to open those. Hmmm..

This is what I found off of google,

But depending on the year, perhaps the filesystem may be HFS+ (considering there is an apple logo on the drive, I'm assuming it was in a mac... perhaps I'm wrong and it's FAT32)
