+ Covers sub-$250 price segment
+ Overclocked out of the box
+ Very quiet during gaming
+ Fans turn off in idle and light gaming
+ 4 GB VRAM
+ Backplate included

- Price/performance not as good as other cards in this price-segment
- Not as energy efficient as NVIDIA Maxwell cards
- 4 GB VRAM provides little benefit at 1080p/1440p
- Lack of HDMI 2.0

kek. You could buy R9 390 for $260 on the regular Newegg website with promo codes a month ago.
Comparing deal prices for old cards to launch prices of new cards isn't very smart. When the 380x goes on sale it will be below $200.
GTX 960 is basically dead now.
>>
>>51422080
>960
>dead
Do you have any idea how much room Nvidia has to work with?
The GTX 680 was built with Nvidia's midrange Kepler chip. The 770 was the same chip. They replaced it (along with Big Kepler) with an even cheaper chip in the 980/970. They've been getting away with charging $550 for this because AMD offers no competition.
The GTX 960 is that chip cut in half.

Nvidia could drop the 970 to $200 and the 960 to $100 any time they wanted. It's AMD that's bankrupt in the era of $150 price premiums.

If Nvidia can drop the 970 to $200, than so can AMD with the 390. They are the same size chips.

To be honest, the video card market has been stagnant for years now.

I think it is a combination of lack of competition for Nvidia and the restrictions of a 28nm chip.

Crysis 3 is unplayable with anything less than a GTX970/R9 290X.

And Crysis 3 is almost a 3 years old game now.

Get a used 290 for that price. Or 280X/7970. 3 GB is OK for 1080p, and you won't go higher with such a card.

Don't buy rebrand shit, stop talking about how Nvidia is jewing us, because AMD does the same. Best option now: 290X/780Ti and wait for 2016. You get these "old" cards almost for free and should not care about DX12, the first DX12 games will arrive in late 2016 or early 2017.

The difference of FPS is about 10-20 FPS

We are talking a CPU/APU under 90 freaking dollars, cmon.
>>
>>51423656

The 280x is a much more powerful card, but the Sapphire in particular is also quite large and power hungry. If you don't have a problem with size or power usage, get the 280x for sure.

Nitro is a brand name. "Tri-X" and "Vapor-X" is not just marketing bullshit:

>The Tri-X cooling solution also employs Sapphire's Vapor-X technology. Vapor Chamber Technology is based on the same principles as heatpipe technology. A liquid coolant is vaporized at a hot surface, the resulting vapor is condensed at a cold surface then the liquid is returned to the hot surface. The recirculation process is controlled by a wick system.

http://www.techspot.com/review/841-radeon-r9-280x-roundup/page6.html

Tri-X coolers are basically three fan systems using this Vapor cooling technology. I have a Vapor-X Tri-X 280x; under load, it does not go above 65 C. And I'm talking Metro Last Light at almost all max settings. You can see the results of the above tests for confirmation.

AMD raised the price of the 290 when they rebranded it as the 390, they won't be cutting the price at all unless they're forced to do so.

I don't know much, so I bought this card 2 or so years ago a few months after it came out..
Is it worth upgrading from a gtx770 for the extra VRAM? It's running at 1200Mhz, I get smooth 60+FPS gameplay at 1080p high settings for newer games (GTAV, MGSV, BF4, Assetto Corsa)..
I'm assuming it would mainly allow me to up texture res at 1080?

I haven't personally tried overclocking yet. It will only have so much room because of voltage lock, but judging from the article I linked, there's substantial room for memory overclocking over core overclocking that can still give a handful of frames in performance boost, which can mean the difference between 60 frames or less.

It's a shame, given how much headroom these cards have with such fantastic aftermarket coolers.

I think that's why the 970 is the same.

I don't know anon that is alot of pixels man.
best off getting 390 for that screen.

Nice screen anon :3

GT 630 4GB I had was so bad it blew up and caught fire I don't miss that video card.

dude, If you have a UHD TV, you can't watch a movie with AMD cards because these retarded don't have HDMI 2.0 output
>>
>>51424551

AMD fucked the naming up.

270/270X = 380/380X
280/280X = 390/390X
290/290X = Fury/Fury X
???????? = Fury Nano
>>
>>51424327
144hz or nothing
>>
>>51421338
Friend, you have the greatest card that was ever created and has aged beautifully.

Why upgrade just yet?
>>
>>51425746

As far as I know, the only differences for each of these price points is a MP shrink and HBM on the Fury cards.

No clue why they felt the need to misalign the card names. Either the new series underperformed or overperformed.
>>
>>51425746

>doesn't understand architectures

Protip amigo: tonga is tahiti's direct replacement so now just about the entire AMD lineup supports the same secondary featureset.
>>
So will Nvidia make a 960 Ti ? There seems to be a large price gap between 960 and 970; but if they put real 4 gb in a 960 Ti, it will kill 970 sales.
>>
>>51425923
In an ideal world, AMD would have just downgraded the GPU's price level so that Fiji starts as the 390X/390, Hawaii at 380X/380, etc.
The R9 X90 is supposed to be the flagship cards anyway, Fury kind of ruined it.
>>
>>51425980
They're probably going to drop the naming scheme next gen anyway and return the the x90 being the top card. Otherwise the dual gpu card would be called the "Fury X 2 X2" which is retarded.
>>
>buying a new GPU now when a new gen is coming in mid 2016 and everything will get lower prices
>>
>>51426021
That should have been the 395X2
>>
>>51426021

they'll just call the new flagship fury maxx and relegate the fury x to be the new 390/390x class GPU.
>>
>>51423782

FORTY WHOLE DOLLAR SIGNS!?

HOW??
>>
>>51426021

Why not go to 4xx
>>
>>51425923

What has that got to do with anything..? It's about price/performance points, and the logical generational replacements based thereon. Feature set differences are negligible in both generations of R9, so why even bring that up..?
>>
>>51421447
Thats the worst card money can buy.
Why are you baiting retarded anons?
>>
>>51426110

It matters because hawaii is still a performance tier above tonga and fiji is essentially a mashup of tonga and hawaii with HBM and a shitload more shaders. Tahiti is now 3 years old and AMD has put a big push into its secondary featureset thus having two of the more popular cards in the range not supporting these features is silly, hence why tonga is a direct replacement and not inherently a performance tier jump. Remember: tahiti doesn't support freesync for vidya and a shitload of other things (like VSR).

Tonga in some areas is actually considerably faster than tahiti (and even hawaii) which let AMD actually cut down parts of the GCN design to get the same performance.
>>
>>51426133
But that's not an R7 370
>>
>>51426159
Tahiti is/was also a large chip wasn't it? Being at the time the top runner with lots of DP capability along with ~200w power draw and large coolers needed. A size reduction on Tonga should also translate to a lower bom.
>>
>>51426159

Thanks for bringing me up to speed concisely, chum.

It's been looking like such a clusterfuck of half-abandoned 'new architectures' lately that I haven't had the patience to dig beneath the surface.

computer recycling center that i visit.
They hadnt tested it yet, so they werent sure if it was working or not.
>>
>>51426244

>Tahiti is/was also a large chip wasn't it?

Off the top of my head, yes. It certainly has excellent DP which consumer cards don't need (hence the enormous gimping maxwell has compared to kepler).

>>51426282

For the most part review sites make more noise about it than AMD themselves do. They see GCN as a single architecture that has evolved in the years it has been out. However people need to apply labels to everything so GCN 1.0, 1.1 and 1.2 get thrown around along with the various codenames AMD uses to designate the chip itself that gets confusing fast based upon a lot of poor explainations.
>>
>>51425807
Yo if you're still here (or anyone else) I currently have a 6950 from 2012 and I was thinking of buying my mate's 7970 for $100. On the other hand, I could get like a BNIB 290 for like $180, might even be able to find a 290x for $200 or so in the near future.

I'm not poor but I also don't want to over pay if a 7970 OCd would be enough to last me another year or two. The only game I play that I can't run well is FO4 but of course I might get new titles in that time, although I don't buy many new games.
>>
>>51427981

A 7970ghz to 290 is roughly a 40% increase in performance. Also: don't buy a reference 290 unless you plan to rip the cooler off.

Nvidia doesn't want to completely kill off AMD, same as Intelt, to create the illusion that there is still a competition ongoing.

Both Nvidia and Intel could slaughter AMD at any time given.

They just chose not to do so and keep AMD alive.

I had some hopes for this one, but I'm not sure it will be enough of a step up from my 280. I guess what I really want, is a ~$300 GCN 1.2 card that will perform about where the 390 is, a 395 if you will.

Since the power management patches for AMDGPU won't be officially released for a few months I've got more than enough time to wait.
>>
Is the 390x worth getting over the 390?
>>
>>51428302

Well of course they buy B-stock, the 970 comes with a factory defect as standard!

>>51428353

From a pure price vs performance perspective, no.
>>
>>51425746
>270/270X = 380/380X

380 is based off the 285
380X is a bigger 285 chip

>280/280X = 390/390X

390 is based off the 290
280X was retired, GCN1.0

>290/290X = Fury/Fury X

Fury is new Fiji

>???????? = Fury Nano

Nano is unique, Fiji with lower TDP

The 'naming scheme' isn't a reference of previous cards. AMD doesn't always shuffle every card down with each generation update. 7000 series, every GPU was new.
>>
>>51428301
What PSU do you have?
>>
Imagine Nvidia would correct their mistake and release a GTX970 with full 4GB.

Imagine Nvidia would release a GTX960Ti

Imagine Intel would release bigger CPUs with performance jumps than Skylake.

>>
>>51422395

>>
>>51428382
>7000 series, every GPU was new.
I really wish AMD had made the cutoff for their new drivers GCN 1.0, it would have been so much cleaner. Making GCN 1.2 the requirement is just going to be a mess and there are far too few cards that qualify. Maybe with the 400 series we'll have another clean refresh with all cards being GCN 1.2 or better.

If AMD's official open source Vulkan implementation only supports GCN 1.2 hardware that's really going to suck.
>>

>>

What are you talking about, AMD have been very clear that AMDGPU and their new hybrid driver model is GCN 1.2 only. They've also to my knowledge so far only discussed Vulkan support in terms of their new hybrid driver model.

"A DisplayPort 1.2 to HDMI 2.0 adapter should work just fine and will support 4K @ 60Hz. Just make sure you use a certified HDMI 2.0 cable as well. Both the adapter and cable can be purchased on Amazon now. Also, I recommend you verify the HDMI 2.0 port is configured for 2.0 and not 1.4b within the TV settings menu."

Friend your bait and obvious angry rant is falling on deaf ears, the solution was here along time ago.
