/g/, I'm trying to convince someone I know that pic related is not a great idea.

Note that this is the GT80S not the normal GT80, so it has 2 980's inside, not 2 980Ms. Price spike is around $1000. Grand total price is about $4600 iirc

Other things to know:
>he moves once every 1-2 years
>travels out of the country every 4-6 months
>absolutely loathes Macbooks/Intel U processor-powered laptops/ultrabooks
>can't build a desktop due to the reasons posted above
>works while traveling
>>
It will fucking melt before booting.
>>
What kind of work does he do on the computer where he would need two 980s?
>>
>>51404060
I'd say go for a cheaper one unless he really cares a lot about graphics. You can spend 1,000 and be happy with it if it's a hobby. If its intense he's kinda out of luck even if he spends that much, it will still never be good enough

Works for oil&gas designing pipeline/distribution layouts with a specialised piece of software. As far as I know from him it's a form of AutoCAD with huge 3D elements already in (like pipes, switches, different modules) and top graphics are needed to not wait a week (an exaggeration, btw) for a blueprint to come out. This, and he also likes to game whenever he has free time.

>>51404099
Graphics are the most major part in play here

I'd buy this if I had money laying around.
>>
>>51404160
I'd do the same, if only I could live on $160 a month for the next 5 months. Time to start stocking on ramen noodles.
>>
>>51404127
I'd go with Quadro 5000M SLI in a mobile workstation for that superior business build quality.
>>
>>51404211
Stock up on oats, not ramen.
Ramen is just garbage. Might as well eat cardboard, least then you don't waste your money.
>>
>>51404237
He'd lose out on the CUDA cores then, and that's a big issue. What he does is not JUST working on a fancy, custom AutoCAD.

>>51404249
I know, but ramen were more of an appealing meme to use.

Point of those models are that they are more or less a portable desktop. Gaming or not, they are intended for heavy graphical workloads.

If he feels the need for that kind of computing power then he should get it. I don't know how demanding his applications and work really are but from my own experience I had no problems doing work with 3D applications on my old MSI with a 560M, only performance issue was with the RAM but that is not relevant. It wasn't on the same scale as I would guess he works on but seeing how long the new cards have come in raw performance and how those programs managed to survive on much weaker hardware than say a 970M I doubt he he needs more.

If he doesn't need more then he shouldn't go too big, a 15,6" notebook weighing 4kg + power BRICK is not pleasant to travel around with. Trust me on this one, when I worked at sea my notebook would take up most of the luggage weight and space. And yet when I was on board the control room PC built in 2008 ran the ship's active 3D blueprints just fine, old program but still viable.

I would recommend getting the MSI GE62 2QF Apache Pro instead. It still holds a good amount of power for a notebook, its light and easy to bring along and perfect form factor all around as well as the power brick is more probable in size. Or move up to the GT72 2QE Dominator Pro G for more screen space and power+cooling, but at that point I would probably just get the full on 980 SLI version instead since the difference isn't that much better at that point.

>I don't know how demanding his applications and work really are

At his house when he moved where he still lives now, he dumped a tonne of money on a render box (company paid 50% of it tho), then his work intensified, now he moves somewhere else and he had to sell his box at dumping price because he can't carry it with him nor trusts shipping companies to not send it and break in the way.

>Trust me on this one, when I worked at sea my notebook would take up most of the luggage weight and space

Laptop comes with a backpack suited to carry this around, but I see your point. Don't airlines allow you laptop bag/backpack plus hand luggage these days? I never had a problem with these, but I traveled in and out of Europe.

Advice noted, thanks for your time.
>>
>>51404060

I will never buy another MSI laptop, one of the worst decisions I ever made. totally shitty build, motherboard and keyboard. I guess I learned my lesson the hard way. your buddy will too.

OP I know the laptop for your friend, It's simple.

Either P50 or P70. These laptops are designed just for your friend and are cheaper too.

Unless he REALLY wants to do hard PC gaming on the go.

Nigger, We have the GT72 here at my store and running Unigine Heaven at Extreme preset it doesn't go above 55°C

Love my gaming laptop. Fits my lifestyle better than a desktop. I travel on business, and even when I am at home I like sitting on the couch with my girlfriend, watching movies. Being at a desk doesn't work for me anymore.

The bag I got with mine was still quite large but it wasn't a problem bringing it with me on the plane, main issue was that even for a 15,6" it didn't fit in to the security scanning boxes. It was also not convenient to pack it up and down when in a hurry. They did upgrade the size of the boxes the last time I needed to bring it with me on a plane but I doubt a 18,4" notebook will fit in those.

The included bag's zipper provided by MSI also broke before a flight once, that caused some real chaos at the check in.

I think he might need the computing power of that SLI model, but as I said earlier, that is not a notebook, its a mobile desktop and he will have to see it as one.

>>51404933
>shitty display
>high RMA counts on their storage drives

the guy is gonna need reliability above all else since its work related, MSI aren't perfect in some ways (like the driver support) but their hardware is still pretty good. I abused mine for 4 years straight until it died on me, and by that point it was already time to upgrade anyway.
>>
>>51404928
>mfw I own a MSI CX61
>agreed on the shitty build and keyboard
Still, it's 2 years old and running stronk. Keyboard I think it's out of discussion to be an issue for the GT80, since Steelseries makes it and it's not a chiclet like 99.999% of the rest out there.

>>51404967
I'm planning to do that soon desks are no longer my thing, especially since I can never seem to find a proper chair that will not make me flood the back of my shirt after sitting for more than 2 hours at, that will not cost me a piece of my liver.

What the fuck does that even mean, Lelnovo couldn't make their ultra premium thinkpad unreliable.

This is meant to be business quality.

That's a shit ton of money for something barely portable and will require a power outlet within 5 min regardless. The parts will be gimped one way or another as well.

I'd rather build a compact computer with whatever specs needed with a cable coil that retracts into the enclosure + screen mounted on the side of the PC with bluetooth mouse and KB (or retractable cable coil for them too, fitted on side of the chassis) in a carrying case/backpack. Not some kind of mid tower or anything, just enough to fit the graphic cards. The rest is usually small enough to fit around those cards.

Big, clunky and expensive. Bigger than laptop, barely clunkier but much less expensive and much more powerful. I'd understand if it was too much of a hassle to make though.
>>
Why not op? You just gave a reason why he should get it.
>>
>>51405106
High RMA means that a fucktonne of people returned it during the warranty period for different reasons.

>>51405145
First of all, it's monstrous. Second, with the keyboard placed like that, you're not going to keep it on your lap (inb4 "I need a chiropractor") not only because of that but also because it's 4.5kg (10lbs for 'Muricans), plus even if you get some space to put it on a desk, who know how much can you work on it until the lower border of the keyboard will dig into your wrist (thank fuck they give you a gel rest)

>>51405117
>The parts will be gimped one way or another as well

Explain this, curious
>>
>>51405117
It might be better in a lot of ways, but a small desktop is still a box. A laptop is pretty much flat, which makes it easier to slide in a (pretty huge in this case) backpack. A laptop is also more prepared to be transported., the components can't move inside. The parts inside the desktop can be moved, but they won't like being moved around.
>>
>>51405216
Well first of all, if he is serious about his work he wouldn't use it on his lap.
It's also not meant to be carried around while in use, you won't feel 4,5 kg in a backpack.
You are right about the last one, but you can't know for sure how 'sharp' it really is from only pictures.
>>
>>51405243
>Well first of all, if he is serious about his work he wouldn't use it on his lap

That's right, but in the commercial airplanes of today, unless his company will start getting him business tickets, he'll struggle with space at economy since you got to keep some distance from it.

The lower edges of the keyboard are rounded, they're not as sharp as might look, but still after 1-2 hours you'll see rectangles below your wrists.

>Explain this, curious

Mostly the cooling won't let you have desktop clocked CPU and GPU. The heatsink is comperably tiny, the fans are tiny and few also limited to the horizontal flat plane for moving heat. Either they spin at 5000+ rpm and blow your ears out or the cpu and gpu are downclocked in some manner. Most likely they will downclock as things heat up as fans and heatsink can't compensate enough.

The monitor is obviously huge for a laptop and good enough with 1080 pixels but I've yet to see anything above 60hz and if it has nice viewing angles and color spectrum it's probably a IPS with kinda high response times and some kind of weird budget e-IPS or whatever version they make nowadays.
>>
>>51405311
Well I can't say anything about using it on a plane, but power would be an issue too in such case.
>>
>>51405219
>The parts inside the desktop can be moved, but they won't like being moved around.

With water cooling instead of huge heatsink ripping or warping the motherboard I don't think that's much of an issue. Especially now with SSDs. If you are seriously concerned then the parts can be zip tied or otherwise secured. The chassis can also be made to withstand more force than a plastic laptop.

If you REALLY don't want shit to move you could always fill up with hardening foam after securing airflow tunnels and fans.

With the GPU I don't know, but the CPU is a mobile one (it is quite overkill in any situation, 2.9Ghz 4-core 8-thread turbo'd up to 3.6).

There are two heatsinks and an intricate system of pipes leading to the two heatsinks, see pic related.

The screen has quite good viewing angles based on video reviews (of the older GT80, not sure if they changed anything on the 80S), and it runs at 75Hz.

>>51405370
Most business seats do come with power outlets, thankfully for cases like his when battery survives a bit under 2 hours under heavy load.
>>
>>51405400
Yeah, but that's way too much hassle.
