T B H, if you're not getting the Gear VR or better, anything else is just trash or babies' toys. The only thing you get with the different phone holders is better durability, comfort, convenience, or any combination of those, compared to Cardboard.

I recommend not giving these options the time of day and save up for a future purchase of a better VR system.

None of them deliver on or provide better VR, only convenience, comfort, or durability. I say this from experience. I can not go back to the Viewmaster VR after having tried Gear VR. No, the Viewmaster headset is not the same one as the old card holder things, they have a completely new product but it's still under their brand name.

Cardboard will hurt your face more than it will hurt your eyes. Actually none of these should hurt your eyes because the lenses focus your eyes at infinite.

As for fake VR, some people don't even consider Gear VR real VR, because the Rift/Vive is just so much better and more advanced, so much so that the end result is that statistically much more people feel like they are teleported, or in the simulated world.

The non-cardboard ones are basically glorified versions of Cardboard. They basically do the same thing, but can be made out of plastic, be better built, etc. They don't actually improve much on the VR itself.

Those kits and similar ones don't work because they are generally too low resolution, low FOV, laggy, and unoptimized.

If you have abnormal eyes, it does help, otherwise they add unnecessary mechanical complexity and fault points. If you have an IPD (distance between the pupils) of less than 60 or more than 68 then you probably want the adjustable IPD. If your eyes are not at least 18/20, you can actually just wear your glasses to fix the focus, but at that point you have the option to get one with adjustable focus if you really want.
