Let's be honest /g/, OS X is pretty nice.

So why doesn't Apple develop OS X to run on most hardware and sell it as an installable OS like Microsoft does with Windows?
>>
>>51397101
Are you mentally challenged? They make money off hardware (and fat Americans unable to torrent).
>>
Because faggot people need dedicated hardware to feel cool
>>
>>51397101
Because their current business model is likely to be more profitable for them.
>>
>>51397101
because it's not their business

a company might make great cars but probably won't profit from making motorcycles
>>
>>51397101
>Let's be honest /g/, OS X is pretty nice.
I find it sub-par, but sure, some people like it. Mostly the same people who're now running to Android and sometimes IOS for their media consumption and communications stuff, but yea.

> So why doesn't Apple develop OS X to run on most hardware and sell it as an installable OS like Microsoft does with Windows?
Because they'd not make as much money?

Apple sells to suckers who overpay hardware. Guess what happens if all the normal companies -without Apple's fanboys- sell the exact same thing (right now, people can delude themselves that they get super luxury quality with Apple, it won't work anymore then however).
>>
>>51397101
because they're successful and make more money every single year

despite what autists want to believe

Thats not how it works, hardware manufacturers to provide hardware drivers.

Applel can't even optimize OSX to run properly on a single fixed hardware platform that changes once every two years vs Windows/Linux which are made to work with a trillion+ different hardware combinations.
>>
>>51397185
where is that from?

Direct from the skiddies at applel.

Bought a rMBP just because I was getting bored of Windows.

3 of those lost tests are for Firefox performance, which is just known to have a bad OSX port. The author of the article doesnt even seem know that Macs mainly use regular pc hardware which has Windows drivers from the manufacturer.

Conclusion: You will eat up any bullshit as long as it argues against Apple.
>>
>>51397339
>>Macs mainly use regular pc hardware which has Windows drivers from the manufacturer.

>applel chooses one specific combo of said hardware and slaps them together
>makes performance worse than even chink OEM manufacturers

Conclusion: You will eat up any shit from your hands as long as it's from Apple.
>>
>>51397101
Don't kid yourself into thinking anyone else in this thread is right, OP.

The REAL reason is that if they started supporting other hardware like Windows does, it would end up being Windows. With all the positives and negatives that come with that.

The "tests" also seem awfully random. Firefox for example is notoriously badly ported to OSX.

Nice blog.
>>
>>51397284
So I actually read up on this issue
1. This is a very outdated libc version that hasnt been used in OSX for years
2. That particular solution wasn't written by Apple, its from the FreeBSD libc, that spawns bash to avoid licensing issues with the GPL instead of merging the parsing code and having to drop the permissive license. Apparently FreeBSD actually still spawns a shell in its newest libc implementation https://github.com/freebsd/freebsd/blob/master/lib/libc/gen/wordexp.c#L123

Its just an ugly solution for an ugly problem, but everyone seems to do it like that.

i am a apple fan and let me tell you, being an apple user is actually a great thing. we have beautiful products and we have ugly products. just like any company. tim cook for 1 is a great person, makes great products, and takes care of every one that is in his customer base and is glad to do it, and for that he has people that love him around him. also, apple products are one of the best profucts you can have. sometimes they can be really restricted, but they will take care of you no matter what, and the genius bar will help you buy what ever it is that you need. as long as your not a selfish ****head. Also, we all have great jobs, lots of money and an online community that we all love and helps us eat shit out of our hands.

I come to apple threads for these posts.
>>
>>51397101
It's simple really. >>51397120 and >>51397125 are right.

>Does Apple make great hardware?
Yes.
>Does Apple make overpriced hardware? Absolutely.
>Is the hidden of the Apple empire OS X and not their fucking tablets or phones?
YES YES A THOUSANDS TIMES YES.

This is where I think the average OS X user on /g/ feels conflicted. They know that OS X is great as a standalone product, yet can't stand the shitty business tactics that Apple uses to push their brand. Either way, the average Mac owner doesn't use their hardware or software for anything but word processing or Facebook/Tumblr. And so power-users are left holding the bag when it comes to places like /g/.

But who gives a fuck what fa/g/ots think. At least I don't have to use Windows 10.

This.

apple are control freaks. they want to make sure everyone has a good experience. they can't do that if it's being ported to uncapable hardware.
ever tried android or windows on a low spec phone / computer? it's a terrible experience. doesn't happen much with apple, and they do there best to make sure of it.

>>51399549
/g/ sees it as overpriced, which it is, but not extremely so. a comparable windows computer is maybe a $100-200's less. also, apple sheep are insufferable. they claim it's the best thing ever, and act like they're special because they have the latest model.
>>
>>51398138
those trackpads are literally nothing special
mice are better
>>
>>51398138
I have to admit that their trackpads are probably the best in the world. That said, trackpads are easily beaten out by mice. One of which I always have in my backpack.
>>
>>51399733
An actually insightful post. Apple definitely wants to control the experience as much as possible, so they restrict any features to only work exactly as they want. And after I did a lot of research this spring searching for a new laptop, I agree about MacBooks. They're slightly more expensive, but after all the shit HP makes me deal with, I recommend the MBA as the best ultrabook.
>>
>>51397101
Let's be honest OS X isn't good.
Bad hardware support.
Too short support cycle of hardware.
The slow especially with regards to graphics.
Irremovable, the slow, bad design(IMHO) graphic environment "Aqua".
No fully functional package manager.
etc.
>>
>>51397101
Because apple is a hardware company you fucking morons. They dontbfucking sell iOS or OSX. They sell iMacs and iPhones. This whole "bla bla bla support and stability" is secondary to the capitalistic truth: apple wants you to buy their materials, not data. Hackintosh master race reporting in.
>>
Keking at all those tinfoiled pseudocapitalists here. For osx to support every piece of consumer hardware there is (that's what windows does, and there is a fuckload of said hardware) it would take unimaginable amount of work both from apple and each and every hardware dev there is (hundreds, if not thousands), then there is marketing stuff, like getting it preinstalled on thousands of different PCs in stores around the world. Even if Cook wakes up tomorrow morning and says that this shit is their number 1 priority now it will take years at the very best with tons of luck given the right circumstances and some real big money.
>>
There is no money in selling an OS. Microsoft won't be doing it for much longer outside of enterprise. Apple does not require more OSX marketshare either as it's already have substantially higher quality 3rd party debs and software available for it
>>
>>51397957
>But who gives a fuck what fa/g/ots think.
You do. That's why you replied.
>>
they want a tightly controlled user experience. they realize that the reason that people shit on windows is that shitty OEMs put windows on their shitty machines and as a result, people blame their computer problems on windows (even though it's the OEM's fault). if Apple gets to decide what machines OSX gets to run on (their machines only, for which the OS is tuned to work with) they prevent normies from ever getting the idea that "mac is shit and gets viruses XDDDDDDDDDDDD", thereby protecting their brand.

Their trackpads are so good that most mice really arent that much better.

The force touch trackpad is the best trackpad I've ever used. The only thing that comes close is the previous Mac trackpad (like in the Air & 2014 pro) and the Dell XPS 13 trackpad, which is very similar to the previous mac ones.

Also, whoever makes the trackpad drivers for the dell is really not good at it because the gesture support sucks.

Best mouse that takes advantage of the gestures that makes using mac laptops so great is the Logitech MX Master
