Gaming with VR would be great, and the idea of the menu launch using a hand swipe in SAO is capable with some VR headsets already.

Unlikely.
Not because of technological limitations, but because of the direction of technological advancements. We're going towards cheap, mass-marketable throwaway gadgets, not exensive escapism toolsets for permavirgins.
Also hardcore gaming which could be the only force behind AAA VR games which IS dying.
