Head First Java, and anything published by Manning.

Personally I found Big Java By Horstmann to be convoluted shit.

Big Java is the book we use at my uni for intro to java and second semester advanced OOP. I also feel the book is a bit bad, but I have barley read it
Any comments on the book? It seems difficult to find a clear explanation of the different methods and syntax. And the code examples does not show clearly how to do and use stuff.
Also the book seems filled up with useless stuff and filler that is nothing but distracting.

Anyone else tried out the book Big Java?

If you've never programmed begore, don't start with a book. Start with Lynda.com/YouTube tutorials and play with the language yourself. Once you have a decent grasp on shit then go back and look at books. I recommend The Java Programming Language 4th edition, its dry as fuck but comprehensive.
