I put my computer to sleep to go take a shit and when I come back, I press the power button, the fans start to spin up (case, psu, cpu) and some mobo lights come on but it then it turns off. This all takes place in like 1/2 a second.
I've tried the case switch and the power switch and both give the same result.
If I cycle the power at the wall or turn my PSU switch off and on, I can repeat it over and over.

The light on the power supply stays on when the power is plugged back in and when the computer tries to start.

Asking again, are the XPS 13 and XPS 15 any good?
13" or 15" for college stuff?
>>
>>50779078
That usually indicates a CPU fatal error. Could be a loose connection inside the computer (most likely CPU 4 pin power), an actually faulty CPU, or a bad PSU.

I have a Yoga 2 Pro which can give you some insight. 13.3" is a tad bit small, but great for carrying around.

I would assume the newer Skylake models for the XPS are more energy conservant, if not at the least as good as a Haswell CPU. Overall I would go for the 15" model
>>
>>50779123

Overpriced, also 14" is optimal. 13 too small, 15 a tad big.

Need to read in a file in java.
File has 2 columns of numbers.
I need to average them separately.

How do?
I have skeleton code down.
I don't know the logic to read from each columns skipping spaces and such.

thanks
>>
>>50779133
fuck
I couldn't see the 4 pin because my computer is in an awkward position but there was an 8 pin connector on the motherboard that was ever so loose so I pushed it back in but problem wasn't fixed. I'll have a look tomorrow at finding a 4 pin.

How common is it for a roughly 4 year old CPU to just die like that and how likely is it that the PSU has died compared to the CPU?

Visual Studio 2013 is required for the programming course I'm following. I can get VS 2015 for free with Dreamspark, will everything be alright if I use that instead of 2013?
>>
>>50779221
I do realize there is a price premium, but I need something easy to carry around constantly. My other option might be one of the new skylake thinkpads.

>>50779174
Thank you for the input.
>>
>>50779281
An 8 pin connector is okay too

As for the CPU/PSU A CPU's lifespan is much longer than a PSU. But a dying PSU can cause a surge in power and kill a mobo and CPU with itself. So there are a lot of possibilities

Ask the instructor.
The GUI might be different from the one used in tutorials.

I don't know visual studio very well, but the newer versions of the libraries might also be slightly different. Some provided code examples might not work out of the box due to deprecated methods and changes in libraries.

Is there a set of characters separating the columns?
You could essentially search for those characters as a whole and assign each cell (I.e. A1 B2 ) to a variable for you to manipulate (I'd use just an array for 2 columns).

Use those for loops anon

So I installed a new power supply in my computer but now it won't stay on (turns on, lights might come on the motherboard, then turns off). I went from 750w to 650w so I don't think that's the problem. I tested it with the other power supply as well as build almost the entire system over again to no avail. Could the motherboard be causing this, because I had a similar issue with it less than a year ago, and the system itself is just under a year old.

Maybe I did change something, but I can't figure out what it is because it was a couple of weeks ago now
As in it's been crashing for a couple of weeks now
The reason I didn't look into what the cause was the moment it started crashing was because I thought I knew what it was instantly, but I turned out to be wrong.
So basically I'm wondering if you could tell me what type of behaviours could lead to os crashing? I thought it was having my memo app open, where I had a fuckton of notes so it consumed memory or something, but that wasn't it, so I don't know what to look for.

Trying to find free downloads for college textbooks. I wandered into some questionable areas, and in my.... stupor.... late one night, I accidentally ran a wrong file.

It's a version of the CryptoLocker virus. It encrypts all of your personal files, crashes your PC, and demands a ransom to get a key.

Here's the funny thing- it didn't encrypt any of my files. All it did was crash my PC and make a few notepads pop up saying how I can pay to get the key to the files that weren't encrypted.

Oh, and copy itself over 24,000 times. Bastards making me delete all this shit. I'm not even deleting it normally, I'm scrubbing it all right off the hard drive.

I got a cpu from a friend who ran it oc'd at around 75c, it's a Deneb with a max operating temp of 62c. He said it heat throttled he ran it so hot. Custom classes meaning classes that are written manually? You can write those, of course.

This isn't for a specific assignment of course, I'm just reviewing stuff for an interview I have soon.

One suggestion from /dpt/ I had was to replace the array with a new one when it gets too full and copy the values over. Not sure if this is how it's normally done.

How can I copy a small section of an image and duplicate it in a way that it doesnt look like a tile?
>>
>>50781486
Well, there is several solutions depending on the situation. If memory is cheap, you can initialize an array as large as the number of possible hash.

You can then use a HashTableEntry class that has an attribute that can point to another instance of HashTableEntry.

Other solution is using a two dimention array and copy values over when it get full. This is how arraylists work.

>>50783267
newegg shows a 15 dollar difference, i dont know where you saw 60. even with a 60 dollar difference, with a reasonable cpu cooler in the future you could pull 4.4 pretty easy, at which case you would get around a 20-25% boost. That means that you could wait longer to upgrade saving more, but if you don't go k you wont have that option. the % difference in price equates to about the same % boost in performance, and offers you more options. I like to have options, and I like to overclock, so naturally I would recommend the 4690k. If you decided not to overclock, go with one of the xeons, the 1231v3 iirc. its basically a i7 with no overclocking and no integrated graphics for i5ish price

So I'm gonna be spending half a year in Korea for exchange, and I need a laptop since my old one is broken (currently using a desktop). I'm also broke as fuck since I'm a student so my budget is around 200-300 euros. Out of curiosity I had a look at local auction sites and there are loads of Thinkpads and HP business laptops (pic related, right in my price range) on sale that fit my budget, and most of them have decent specs (i5/i7, 4/8gb, 300-500gb etc). They seem to be anywhere from 3-5 years old, but since they're old work and company laptops (I assume) they're probably in decent condition.

Should i fall for the thinkpad meme, /g/?

On ubuntu when i select an image file to open, ie. to attach it to a 4chan post, or open it on gimp, it displays a thumbnail preview.

But this doesn't seem to be the case for everything, pic related shows how the thumbnail preview doesn't work when i try to select an image to send as a message to a mumble channel, but it does when i try to select an image to attach to a 4chan comment.

This is annoying as fuck please help.

When I type "google.com" into my browser it comes up with "https://www.google.com/?gfe_rd=ssl&ei=UlocVqiRCoST-gWix5xY" instead. Is this adware? Usually google's address for me is "https://www.google.com/?gws_rd=ssl" but it changed yesterday on two computers but not the third.

I'm in the midwest US so I'm not sure why it's redirecting. Has anyone else had this problem? Is it similar to the webhp virus that some anon was talking about here https://archive.rebeccablacktech.com/g/thread/S50426870#p50430190

Depends on the cooler, most 120mm fans stay under 2000RPM
100mm's do 2000-3000
80mm and you're getting into windtunnel territory.

Because the person writing it thinks that someone on the internet could debug their networking code without a full log of the connection and an understanding of the backend code

Do you mean at idle? Max speed? or what?

Typically the RPM specs depend on the size of the fan. Smaller fans have higher RPM and bigger ones have a lower max speed, but that's not always the case.

Mine which is 120mm goes from 470 RPM lowest to 1600 at its highest IIRC.

But my case fans which are 140mm go from 450-1000 RPM.

Alright /g/. I have basically no idea about coding. I did some basic stuff from "Code Academy" on Java but that's essentially it.

I now have something I want to create though.

I have a friend who I know has nudes on her phone and I want to be able to discreetly copies them from her phone once it's connected to my PC.

But I don't know where to start.

I've found programs online that work when USB drives are inserted but they check for new drives by assigned letter. When my phone is mounted, it isn't allocated a letter and is instead "Computer\PHONE NAME\Phone" I also don't know her phone's name.

So that's where I'm at. An idea but no know how.

A 390/X is a pretty big card (depending on which manufacturing model) e.g Sapphire 390 is about 30cm long so you have to consider case size etc.
It uses 2 x 8pin pci connectors from the PSU which if your PSU is good it should have.
Drivers are an obvious factor as you said.
Also AMD cards are notorious for overheating, however if you get a good cooler and have a good air flow within your case you'll be fine.

My latest creation is here and similar to yours

if you're doing specifically video rendering and shit like that, then it's fine

but if you're doing anything else (gaming, some video editing, vm's, etc) you would be much better off with a 6600k which is around the same price (or cheaper depending on the deals available)

i always advise against xeons for regular people.

>>50786057
No point in a xeon. If you do not plan on overclocking, just buy a locked i7.
Make sure your ram is compatible with your cpu.
I would invest in a nice featured mobo, useful for future-proofing.
No point in a cooler if you do not plan on overclocking.
Samsung SSDs are shit. WD or Crucial.
Buy a less gay case. I suggest Fractal.
Regular 980 is pretty poor price/performance. Look towards 980ti if you want more power, or settle with a 390.

I know that you can, with some sort of program, manipulate the "last modified on" date in a Word document, so it looks like it was completed before it actually was. My question is, is there any way to see this? Similar to that image effect/overlay/whatever to see whether a photo has been photoshopped? Or is it just impossible?

Hey, /g/, I'm looking for some advice.

I'll be starting a new job soon, and that means.... MONEY!!

But, here's the question: WHAT TO DO WITH!?

Ok, so my laptop is like 6 years old, almost, and it's running i3 330M 2.13 GHz, 8GB RAM @ 1066 (533) MHz, and a 7200 RPM HDD @ 320 GB, Windows 10.

If I'm gonna get a new PC, I'll need like $2K for what I want, so to start, I'd actually prefer to upgrade this old heap first.

I talked with a technician, and he actually said my laptop should have a removable CPU.
So, if upgrading, I was thinking to get the i7 640M @ 2.8-3.2 GHz.

I was also thinking that maybe getting an SSD might be the answer.

Regarding the CPU, it's a socket 989, though, so I'm a bit confused about that. Searching seems to indicate I can use EITHER gen 1/2 in that. Can someone confirm this, because if so, I might try for the i7-2860QM @ 2.5-3.6 GHz (but 4-core, 8-thread as opposed to 2/4).

But, seriously, which should I go to first? If I get SSD, do you think I'll even NEED to upgrade CPU, unless I want into gaming?

For further reference, it's a Dell Studio 1558.

>>Or i7 2860 QM @ 2.5-3.6 GHz, quad/8? (if gen 1/2 IS correct)

Drop an SSD in there, save the rest.
You don't need to take out the mech, you can replace the DVD drive with an HDD caddy.
If you need a DVD drive in 2015 for some odd reason, you can use a USB one.
If the laptop is that old, it may take a crap any time. The SSD you can reuse on the new rig, a processor for an outdated socket, not so much.
>Gaming
>On a laptop
>With Intel HD graphics
You are a funny guy, I will kill you last.
But seriously, all that rig is good for is a PS1 emulator, trying to play modern 3D games on it will be painful (low FPS at lowest detail settings).
Seriously, don't go on a shopping spree. Chances are, until you adapt to the new job, you will be too tired to properly enjoy it while it devaluates.
Also, don't spend that much on a rig. Rather, update more often if necessary, it will give you more bang for your buck.

It's a laptop. I need a laptop.

But, you think it's not worth upgrading?
I was kinda worried about that myself...

I guess I'll have to order one from Dell before June, then.

What do you think this will cost? Do you think I can get it for under $2K?
>dual disk drives, 1x 1TB SSD , 1x 1TB HDD (7200/9000 RPM)
>BD read/write/rewrite
>either 16 or 32GB DDR3 RAM
>dedicated graphics, probably NVidia something (I'll try for 4 GB, but do you think I can get that without spending too much?)
>at least 2 external monitor ports
>at least 4 USB ports (preferably 2+ of them 3.0/3.1)
Don't need a pre-installed OS, since I'll be using one of my own things if I do this. I have a WinX Enterprise, but I'll probably also either install a few multi-boots or make some virtualization partitions for them.
(Does it cost extra to have completely unformatted hard drives, or would that be cheaper?)

>>50789102
But you think I should consider the SSD, because I can move it to a new pc when I get?

Alright. I'll do that then.

But, regarding gaming, I kinda meant retro stuff and Minecraft, maybe some of those indie things that come out on Steam.

I got a i7-3770k 3.5GHz with 4 gb of ram and 2 Radeon 5770's. I think my motherboard is starting to act up and ill need to replace it but this PC is almost 4 years old.

That's pretty good.
And it's not that bad at all.

Can it be customized by calling, though? I really need the SSD to be bigger, and I do NOT need a preinstalled OS.
If not, I guess I could just get it as-is and switch the SSD with another I get.

I also have Flight Simulator for Win 95 installed to run in compatibility mode.

But yes, you're right. USUALLY I download my stuff, but sometimes I just need those nostalgia games. I also, as I stated, need to have a completely blank drive, so I'll need to install it either off an ISO DVD or a bootable flash.

Does anyone have experience with S-record files ? I am supposed to convert an image to hex, and then into .mot (which is SRECK file). Then it has to be loaded into the PLC, the image is to be displayed on a small blue/white monochrome display while the machine is booting up.

Also, I have another image/logo, which is already loaded... how do I reverse engineer this shit ?

I have a problem that I havent been able to find an answer for through google, or by trying stuff out myself. At the weekend I decided to go from Windows 10 to 7, but the 7 install wasn't completely right. A couple of programs I installed came up with 'APPCRASH' everytime I tried to load them. So as I only had the install for a few hours, it was easier to reinstall a different version of Windows 7. So I did, and everything is running perfectly, except the two programs that came up with APPCRASH before. Now just nothing happens when I try to run them. One of the programs was the Battlefront beta, and now when I run that, after a couple of seconds the Origin offers window comes up, as if the program has opened then closed suddenly. Has anyone come across this before and knows of anything I can do? Sorry for the long post btw.
