I think it would be good to ask him if he's ever reflected on how alienating his behavior is and whether that has done more harm than good for the free software movement. I find it hard to believe that more articulate, personable people in the FSF are nowhere to be found, and yet he seems all too happy to travel all over the world to be the face and voice of the FSF to non-FSF parties.

I would ask him if he's ever considered turning down invitations to speak at public events (e.g. going to universities and whatnot) and instead offered to send someone who's more relatable, who maybe can even articulate a path toward freedom that maybe isn't as jarring as his advocacy calls for. For instance, GPLv3 is called "viral" copyright at most companies that I've interned at and worked with; I imagine FSF would be dramatically more successful over time if they advocated that corporations and whatnot used the MIT license initially, and then later made a push for copyleft (like or including GPLv3) later on.

Basically, I would ask him if he's thought much about how ineffectual and maybe even counterproductive he's been, given the meltdowns, toenail-eating, and outbursts he's very publicly had.

As someone who travels around preaching about FSF, he should care about his image. That's the point of someone that does something like that.

I'm not saying he should off himself or anything. He still contributes a lot intellectually to the FSF. But he shouldn't be public-facing.

This isn't a controversial view. Corporations have excellent leadership at the helm but have spokespeople to prevent the CEO from going out there and articulating his rationale for some decision in a retarded way. The spokesperson doesn't need to make decisions - just understand them and communicate them well enough that others understand and maybe even agree.

The FSF needs better spokespeople, and RMS thinking that the's an adequate spokesperson strikes me as some gross misjudgment of his abilities akin to the Dunning-Kruger effect.
