Budget is for headphones and amp

Was considering he-500's or used lcd-2's, maybe he-560's (but from reviews it seems like it might be too sibiliant for my tastes)
however completely unsure as to amp/dac

How necessary/useful are dacs? I've heard different opinions from different camps.
Willing to spend up to about $200 more for a dac, if need be

Anyone have experience with both dt770s and hifiman/audeze? How the the sound signatures etc compare?

Thanks
>>
>>47836925
HE-560s and past experience with Beyers, here. The HE-560 is nowhere near as sharp/sibilant in the treble as the Beyers were (though I don't mind that, myself), and I'd consider them easily the best option in the $1000 range. Massively more comfortable than Audeze's lineup, and HiFiMan's own prior generation for that matter, and the reason they're my endgame is that their sound signature just works for everything. I've yet to find a genre that they don't do marvelously well, which is something not many cans can boast.
>>

Thank you for the response.

What are you using to drive the 560's? And have you heard the 500's at all? Because going straight off reviews, those seemed to be the ones more up my alley (But I haven't heard either)
>>
>>47836801
>easy to EQ
I would say yes, but I've been doing it for a while. A visual interface is very helpful when starting out.
>worth it
Absolutely. It can improve the sound no matter how good you think your headphones are.

>>47836925
HE-500 and LCDs aren't the easiest things to wear. But while the 560 isn't treble deficient, it is generally nicer in the highs than the dt770.
Pre-fazor LCDs were very smooth in the treble, and also bordering on veiled. Fazor LCD are less veiled, and the HE-500 is like the Audeze with a treble peak.

Plug in your headphones to your computer and turn up the volume to a high listening level. Play silence. Can you hear whistling or noise? If not, don't bother.

We probably need a pastebin or info image for this question, it shows up all the time.
>>
>>47837028
No experience with the HE-500, sadly. I'm driving my HE-560s off an O2, which seems to be more than sufficient power-wise (and, thus, a Magni 2 would be as well).

Do be sure to factor in weight/comfort if you're new to planars. Even if you have to compromise slightly on sound signature (and, honestly, I'd guess that the HE-560s are more your speed, from your description), the impact of comfort can be markedly more significant. A double-sided planar design can be fucking heavy, and since nobody other than MrSpeakers and, nowadays, HiFiMan seems to realize that heavy headphones require suspension straps, that can lead to some outright uncomfortable headphones, which in turn makes long listening sessions unpleasant or outright untenable.

The Stax SR-009 is a surprisingly heavy headphone from the metal used in the design, but fits well. The strap used in the Hifiman headphones looks like it was lifted aesthetically from the Lambda design,

3rd world country, import from japan is the cheapest way for me.

I'm absolutely satisfied with my speakers when it comes to slow music, but fast music often sounds like a noise. I want to be able to clearly hear every instrument, such as cymbals that don't sound like a white noise and bass guitar that doesn't sound like a constant bass wave. Comfortability is also very important since I will wear them everyday for more than 8h.

If i'm asking too much, at least give me some advices.

That's not an upgrade though. You'll only be disappointed going from an open headphone to a closed one. The m50 is overpriced + uncomfortable as hell anyway. Get an hd598, K612, AKG K7 variant, or an AD900X

That's, like, the best part of it? What?
Here I thought M50(x) was the most recommended one on /g/, huh. I'll have a look at your suggestions though.
>>
>>47838201
closed is the best part of it?
what?

Closed headphones can't compete with similar priced open ones. The m50 (old one) was recommended when it was around 100 dollars + the old m50 was more neutral than the bloated bass m50x. The m40x is regarded to being better than the m50x. For a closed headphone I'd recommend the nvx xpt100 before the m50x. It's hard to beat the comfort of the xpt100 + the soundstage is much better than the m50x. If you're looking for heavy bass headphones then get the jvc ha-sz1000.

I'd still recommend an open headphone before both them though. However if you're looking for portable headphones then the m50x's do fold up so I guess that's a point for them.
>>
>>47838298
There is a sound difference between the M50 and M50x? I thought it was just the addition of a removable cord.
>>
>>47838298
I dunno man, the whole isolated sound thing is exactly what I prefer with closed. I live next to 24/7 noisy traffic road as well and I can hear it very clearly even with loud music on at any time of the day.
I forgot to mention that I play a lot of games, if that makes a difference.

I can't remember the last time I used closed headphones as I've had these 668B for some years now, and the last one I can remember before that was some Panasonic headphones and some "gaming" headset. I can only imagine it being more comfortable and better sounding though.
Portability is mostly a non-issue, I always bring cheap reserves or earbuds if I go out.
Feel free to explain to me your hate for closed back though.
>>
>>47838331
It's not a very big difference but the old m50 is more neutral which could be considered better to some people. The m50x has better earpads + a detachable cable though but it adds some extra bass as well. They both are uncomfortable though compared to a lot of headphones.
>>
>>47838396
I've noticed a lot of people complain about the headclamp, but I don't feel it. Maybe because I have a tiny head. Still, I'm glad I went with the M50x because they're portable and I needed the long cable to connect to my desktop as well and the standard 1.2m.

I prefer my 2050's to my m50's in basically everything. They are similary priced to the 668b's. The 2050's are also comfortable to wear compared to either the 668b or m50. Superlux headphones are considered some of the most uncomfortable headphones to wear which basically means any headphone is probably more comfortable than your 668b's.

If you must get a closed headphone get the nvx xpt100. You can look up videos on how comfortable it is compared to the m50x.

>>47838340
Alright, so I might spend the extra dosh on Sennheiser HD598 instead. Yay or nay?
Else there's NVX XPT100, but them being quite a lot cheaper just tells me that they're quite a lot worse (usually how things go eh?).
Everywhere I look though, in google, M50x is widely considered the superior <$200 choice which is about my budget (another thing I forgot to mention).

>>47838521
2050-whats?
Yeah these Superlux are tiring on me so that's quite true. Good sound, very cheap, but tiresome to wear for long periods of time.

I'm reconsidering open back though. It's just the outside noise that's been bothering me, but honestly I decided to just put on some typically loud music and I almost immediately -forgot- about the traffic noise outside anyway.

I'm also writing this at 20 hours without sleep and ongoing.
>>
>>47838576
Also I very much dislike the gay-ass beige-brown coloring on HD598, but in the end only the sound and comfort matters.
It's just that nothing else around my computer station here is a color other than black or dark gray.

>Just don't get the M50X
I still don't understand what's even potentially bad about them though. Pretty much anywhere I look, any comparison, any review states that the M50X is the overall best option.

Also, I'll add to mention that the two headphones (HD558, M50X) cost almost exactly the same where I can buy any of them (Scandinavia, and I don't do imports).

That's likely because you're looking at, A, shills, or, B, user reviews on web retailers. In either case, you're not getting an informed opinion on how the M50x stacks up.

How much is an AKG K550/K551/K553 in your nation? It's one of the main reasons the M50x's value is shit these days, and it's got a reasonable amount of isolation to boot.

My headphones can be turned up to max while plugged into either front or back 3.5mm jacks and you can barely hear shit, forget listening to anything with bass. I have my computer next to my TV and it is hooked up to my audio receiver via optical. I just ordered a $5 3.5mm to 1/4th inch adapter to use my headphones with the receiver when I want some amplification, I will just have to reach down with my left hand to my receiver and switch inputs to DVD (no custom labels, that's what I decided the PC to be hooked to) and then change the output on my PC to optical, and I have a free (sans the $5 adapter) amp.

Tell me why this is retarded aside from having to have it next to the receiver and going through changing inputs. Why would I want to spend over $100 on a shitty amp when I have a multi hundred dollar A/V receiver just sitting a foot away?

on board audio is fine.

Their comfort is phenomenal. You'll be hard pressed to find a headphone with a better build quality than the 2050. I just love all the metal on it.
>>
>>47839141
You're talking about Superlux headphones though. The comfort on them are so shitty that even downgrading to shittier headphones is understandable. DT770 are pretty open for a closed headphone. You still won't have the soundstage of the 681 though. You also have to consider the DT770 is around 100 dollars more expensive as well.

>JVC SZ-2000 I purchased these after owning the ATH-M50s for a year or two. I was convinced that these were good headphones due to the basshead thread on head-fi. I got them from Amazon Japan and I regretted buying them right away. One of the drivers sounded much less bassy than the other. I fixed this by blowing compressed air in the driver. Even with that problem fix they honestly sounded similar to Razer Krakens. The veil was so bad and the quality was not what I was looking for. I was just starting my headphone journey and like most folks, started with wanting bass. I returned these to Amazon.

so after headband/earpad mods to make the Tascam TH-02 wearable and seal well, I'm trying it out with my e10. I gotta say even though they're not very detailed, the signature is just about perfect. Judging by ear I would say there is a slight bass accentuation that doesn't bleed or boom too much, and then it's pretty much flat all the way into the treble. I still hesitate to recommend them because of how bad the default fit is, but for the $17 I paid these are maybe the best I have heard in terms of value, better than the monoprice 8323 which was the cheapest good sounding (over-ear) headphone. I would gladly pay twice the price or more for a better build while maintaining the sound quality. I don't mind having to mod because after buying so many headphones/electronics I have a bunch of spare earpads and materials that can be used for common mods. But I can never wear these outside, they look even more ridiculous now. Might take a pic later if I can find my cam.

>I was thinking of buying those monoprice IEM's how are they?
good sound (especially for the price), but everything else about them makes them a pain to use. the build is bulky, so it's hard to get them properly seated in the ears, especially if you don't use foam tips. they also have to be worn in a "kind of" around the ear fashion but they don't have memory wire. the cable (on the older model anyways) is braided and so gets tangled really easily. the end result is that (for me anyways), I would spend time getting them in properly only to have one ear sound louder/bassier than the other. If you want a cheap IEM get the panasonic HJE-120k, it may sound a little worse but the comfort, build quality, and general ease of use are amazing. I don't think it's possible to be disappointed by those IEMs.
>>
>>47842330
how badly would a plain old e10 hold them back? considering I listen at lower volume levels compared to most people?
>>
>>47842449
The e10 will not hold back the Mad Dog at all at lower volumes. Before I finished the O2 I used a Creative HD USB powered soundcard and I can't hear any difference between it and the O2 at lower volumes.

The workmanship is god awful. They came up with that as a hotfix to their initial planned design, which used solid teak cups. Several cracked cups and gimbals scratching into the cup later, they settled for the ebony veneer on plastic.
The HE-1000 beta still doesn't have a great finish, but it generally fixes the sonic crap of the 560. They need to improve that in the final product if they seriously think they can fetch 3000 for it.
Could you feel or see ridges in the cup the LCD? That would mean the Fazor version.

What is planar magnetic and why is it so good?
>>
>>47846693
People don't like the beyer treble. But coming from 880s you'll feel right at home (assuming you liked them)
>>
>>47846716
http://www.innerfidelity.com/content/how-planar-magnetic-headphones-work

planar magnetics typically have better bas detail, and usually stay more coherent during complex tracks. the downside is that they are typically power hungry, and the timbre can sound weird.
>>
>>47846620
Depends on your current output. K701s are not easy to drive for dynamic headphones though. They are somewhat power hungry.

What a cancerous pic, something Head-Fier came up? Recommending specific headphones for specific kind of music is something I'll never get but to get that in-depth over specific genres of music and vague, half subjective "specs" listed.

Having Abyss in there is bad for my mental health. Fucking Shill-Fi tools and shills.

>>47846693
Large unit to unit variation, some distort heavily, some have worryingly large variations in the most basic stuff like frequency response. Shit shouldn't exist in its price range.

>>47846716
Planar magnetic are headphones which use a specific kind of transducers. It holds some key design benefits over more conventional electrodynamic drivers but usually comes with some drawbacks like weight. Benefits would be extremely low levels of distortion and very good frequency response extension, especially in the bass.

>>47846775
You can design a very easy to drive planar just fine. Many Audeze models don't even require an amp to be driven loudly.
>>
>>47846775
Is it a fad? Seems like the tech has been around for decades and didn't catch on.
>>
>>47846822
It's gaining popularity, the drivers are typically more expensive than dynamic drivers. I think oppo has shown that you can design an ortho driver just as, if not more efficient than dynamic drivers so we will see if the technology propogates, and gets cheaper with economies of scale.
>>
Is there a working download for Electri-Q somewhere? Links from the OP are dead and every search just turns up more dead links.

>>47846815
>Depends on your current output

>>
>>47846872
Nice. I'd like to see one of the major Japanese makers take it on again.
>>
>>47846822
Top 10 best headphones $900-2000 list would have over half of them planar magnetics.

Only few good cheaper models.
>>
>>47846693
T1 has a strong high treble peak. Very very strong in some cases.
Lambdas, they can be had on the cheap if you import.

>>47846822
Horrible insensitivity and limited output have kept it from being adopted. Planar magnetic is inherently not as efficient as an optimised coil. Space the magnets closer and you limit output, more magnets add weight.
The re-emergence is partly from the development of cheap and powerful neodymium magnets, as well as small companies that would try to establish a niche compared to the more experienced and established competitors that use the moving coil.
I would never say one technology is wholly superior than other, and planars have certain drawbacks associated.

The technology is evolving very quickly, and a lot of different companies are pouring money into r&d. I think the magnet design in the el-8, and the pleated drivers mr.speakers developed are some of the more promising technologies to emerge this year

I'm also interested to see how the technology from the HE-1000 will trickle down into the rest of the hifiman lineup. I've heard they are developing a model to slot between the HE-560 and HE-1000

Ok, no T1 for me in this case.
Will read more on the HD800 and keep an eye open for the lambdas.

Any other model/brand worth taking a look? What about $500/$600, anything besides HE400i?
Thanks for the directions guys, it's a lot easier to do my research when i know where to start.

>HE1000
Asymmetric magnets as a compromise between output and weight.
The nanometer thickness membrane sounds fishy, the impedance doesn't reflect the wires that could be etched into a super-thin diaphragm and retain the low weight. At least the beta model sounded good.

I haven't looked carefully over the pleated or crinkled or whatever Dan does to his drivers, but quick impression of results:
-Alpha prime T50rp: poor
-Ether: pretty decent

How come the v6 looks so flat both on Innerfidelity and HeadRoom measurements? I though they were supposed to be v-shapped leaning towards bright. Honest question, am i reading these wrong or what?

V6 is neutral.
7506 leans towards bright, and IIRC it's the V55 that's V-shaped.

Do more research.

I'm just asking because, as i was led to understad, being neutral is a good thing, but while all big three have smother signatures, they also have more exagerated dips and peaks while the v6 presents more dips and peaks with less db variation, does that means the v6 is, overall, flatter or, lets say, just as flat as the big three? Only problem i'm seeying here is the bass roll-off.
Just trying to understand how all of this works.
>>
>>47847697
Neutral is not "good", because "good sound" is relative. "Analytic" is a better choice of words.
You'll be able to hear everything well, which is why they're used in studios, but it may not sound "good", as neutral headphones can also often be described as "flat"

K601 is even cheaper, the only difference is the 1/4" plug and newer ones being made in China. I got a Chinese made K601 a couple months ago, no issues with quality so far. K601 is only ~$50 cheaper though so it's not a big difference in price.

Schiit Fulla but I returned my 650s because they didn't sound any better than my other cheaper headphones. Audiophiles are delusional.
>>
>>47847697
Here's my listening experience on those headphones. I haven't heard the HD600 but I have listened to the HD650s.

V6:
Much bassier than what the graph shows. The treble peak is very noticeable. It's been described before as a having a V shaped response (enhanced bass and treble) and I generally agree.

K702 (I assume it's the same as K701):
Overall very nice headphones to listen to. Biased towards the treble but it's very smooth throughout the spectrum. Won't sound bassy at first but once you start listening to tracks with a lot of sub-bass you will notice that it extends very well into the lower frequencies.

HD650::
A bassy sounding headphone with great sound everywhere else. Almost perfect except for the bass. Would rather it have the K702's bass (better extension and more neutral/accurate).

A headphone with AKG K702's bass and HD650's treble would be perfect for me. The V6 is just generally a good performer but not as good as either the K702 or the HD650.

>>
>>47848932
>Very interesting, which one would you say to be the natural upgrade from a v6?
I wouldn't point any headphones out as a "natural upgrade". Both are upgrades in a way but it really depends on your preferences. Just be aware that K702/DT880 have strong treble and Sennheisers generally have strong bass. If you listen to bassy music then a bassy headphone might make it too bassy, and vice versa for music with a lot of treble. All three of the big 3 are great headphones though.

>Also, if DT880 and k702 are so similar, what would be the reason to pick one or the other?
Beyers have a more solid construction but are less flexible. The K702 is ligher, more flexible but has bumps on the headband. I've heard newer Chinese made K702s don't have bumps but I've never seen those and the one I have is made in Austria and has the bumps. Great thing about the DT880s is you can get them in the 600 ohm version. It will sound consistent regardless of amp impedance. K702s have a 62 ohm impedance so the sound may vary depending on the amp it's plugged into. Both are pretty quiet headphones. I've had to turn to volume up to max from portable devices for beyers.

Solid, noiseless amp even with the most sensitive headphones (se535). The original maker was a dick though and didn't let people improve it, leaving it with the horrible layout of 1/8" jacks all in the front. Some manufactures eventually said fuck it and started modding it to use rear RCA inputs, 1/4" jacks and rear power input. If you buy one, get the custom ones from JDS labs with those features.
