I just did a basic Newegg search for a laptop with:

>1440x900+ resolution
>Core i3, i5, i7
>13"-14.5" display
>128GB SSD or higher
>Under 4.9 lbs

You know what the cheapest option was? A 13" Macbook Air. It has 4GB of RAM, but for $100 you can up that to 8GB. So that makes it only $15 more than the Acer TravelMate P
>Core i5 4200U, 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD, Radeon HD 8750M, 14.0" 1080p

And the exact same price as the DELL XPS 13
>Core i7 4500U, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 13.3" 1920 x 1080

The Air has an i5-5250U which is right between the two. Sure the Acer and Dell have some advantages, like resolution, screen size, dedicated GPU, or double the storage (fine that's a big deal). But Macbooks generally get great battery life and you have the option of an amazing extended warranty for $300. Which costs the same as it would for Acer or Dell, but neither of them have physical stores you can go to. And Apple is pretty renowned for good support and even replacing whole laptops after warranty on rare occasions.

So why are people here always shitting on Macs for being overpriced? Maybe in some specs the base Macbook Air is a bit worse, but it makes up for it by being able to run OS X and having a really good trackpad. I thought everyone said Macs were like 3 times the cost for the same thing, but that doesn't seem to be the case to me. Are there other good ultrabooks for less than $1000 with all the stuff I mentioned (plus 8GB RAM). I'd be interested to see, because I was really surprised the Mac was cheapest.

How much was the macbook air you found?

$999, which is the official price on the Apple site and Newegg. You can add the RAM on the Apple site for another $100.

Just to prove I'm not baiting or anything, here's the search result.

I got my T450s with 1080p IPS upgrade for just over $700

Nice bait
>>
It's been this way for a while OP

My Macbook Pro 15 has survived 4 years, cost me around $1500, gets round 5 hours of battery life and can game pretty well.

It's going to get even more ridiculous when the Skylake chips come out, The iGPU on those chips is gonna be equivalent to a GT840M or something

Not bait. I don't know why the T450S didn't show up on Newegg but I guess Lenovo only sells Thinkpads through their site? Anyway, it's $120 less for this vs the Macbook Air. That's not really very much.

>>47760909
I know they last a long time, I just thought Windows was still cheaper, even for "ultrabooks". Looking for something decent for less than $750.

>>47760961
I checked the Apple site and Amazon and it's $999 for the current version with the 5250U.

False economy right there. The only Dell laptops reliable enough to be worth buying are the XPS and Latitude.
>>
>>47761029

Oh thanks, that's actually a pretty good deal. Has a 5400RPM drive though, would have to buy a good 128GB SSD for around $90-100.
>>
>>47761061
Your loss, there is nothing wrong with that laptop and it is a great deal. With the 100 bucks off you can add an ssd.
>>
>>47760779
It's just a thing that people take too seriously sometimes, like "install gentoo", "the best laptop you could literally ever own is a used 30 year-old thinkpad", "anyone who disagrees about my phone choice is advertising for a different phone", and etc.

/g/ has a lot of fanboys. Not even an apple user, but it's really obnoxious. Please buy whatever laptop is best suited to your desires/needs and budget.

I guess the Microsoft store is where I should be looking. I've done searches on a couple of sites and everything is around $1000, but on the MS store isn't all like $700.
>>

Manufacturers are incentivized to build long lasting, durable, and reliable electronics, using industry-proven chipsets and technology from large vendors who can commit to driver updates and firmware updates well over the five year lifespan of the device, because these things are typically ordered in batches of thousands or more through channel partners and they don't want to fuck up relationships

See this is the logic I don't understand. What is a "Facebook machine"? Any computer with 8GB of RAM, a decent SSD, an i5 U processor is going to performance general tasks the same. And people use Macbooks for years while cheap consumer Dells and HPs fall apart and overheat after like 2 years.

I'm not dead set on a Mac, but what is so bad about them when they seem pretty reliable and you can actually take them into a physical store if something goes wrong?

honestly, last year the MBA was the most affordable ultraportable on the market. Better battery life and weight than anything else comparable.

Macs are not cheap, they are expensive. The key thing to realise though is when you take every single spec into consideration, Macs aren't a cent overpriced
>>
>>47761690

I still don't understand how it's wrong though. I mean a lot of decent/business quality ultrabooks are around the same price. It's only consumer stuff like Inspirons that's cheaper, and I'm not sure I want to risk it. Also a lot of them have HDDs and 4GB of RAM, which would obviously cost more to upgrade.

Maybe there are T450s and Zenbooks for a bit less, bit it really doesn't seem like the MBA is terrible value like /g/ says about all Apple products. Especially vs the XPS 13, which few people are saying is overpriced.

Yep fair enough, I did see that.

Really the only differences are the keyboard, trackpad, and OS X to the Macbook and display and size/weight to the Dell.

Really what has happened is that Apple has been overcharging for so long other companies have learned they can get away with it too.
>>
>>47762139

>I did a basic Newegg search for a laptop with:
You gave it an extremely specific set of search options like you were trying to find the MBA in particular. Ease up on any of those and you'll probably find other competitors for cheaper.

>And the exact same price as the DELL XPS 13
>>Core i7 4500U, 8GB RAM, 256GB SSD, 13.3" 1920 x 1080
That's the old model. 2015's model isn't on Newegg yet, but it's on Dell's site:
>$900 for Core i5-5200U, 4GB RAM, 128GB SSD, 13.3" 1080p
>Adding +$100 for 8GB RAM puts it at exactly the same price as the 4GB 13" MBA
>Adding another +$100 for 256GB SSD puts it at exactly the same price as the 8GB/128GB MBA
Newer CPU, cheaper, smaller, lighter, higher resolution, longer battery life, with no tradeoffs unless you want Apple.

Admittedly, both Apple and Dell rip off its customers with that upgrade pricing. There's no way it costs them $100 each to increase RAM from 4->8GB or SSD from 128->256GB.

>really good trackpad
Modern computers from other manufacturers have basically the same trackpads as Apple.
>>
>>47762207
Then why are you in such a rush if you can't upload it anyway?
>>
>>47762258
Because there's a loot of footage to go through and edit.
>>
>>47762224
Not him, but I'm not very keen on the spec comparison thing. Does anyone else have pcie ssds yet? Thunderbolt? Little things like optical audio out?

That, plus fit and finish, plus the fucking OS and ecosystem... before the watch, apple products were just "premium", not "luxury", and so many people have bought them because they feel they're worth the money, for whatever reason.

Some of those reasons are certainly adequate for the autists on /g/.
>>
>>47762290
Editing is in no way sped up by a GPU. That can be done locally on a machine with integrated graphics no problem. The transcoding or any rendering could then be done after upload. Like youtube does it.
>>
>>47762224
>low weight
>decent resolution
>hard drive with enough memory to store more than a dimestore romance novel
>"extremely specific set of search options"
???
>>
>>47762325
>excluding Intel Celeron and all AMD CPUs
>excluding 120GB SSDs
>decent resolution = "exactly the same resolution as MBA or higher"
Macbook Air's resolution is the lowest you can still get in new computers that isn't 1366x768.
>>
>>47762457
>AMD CPUs
nigga be trippen
>>
>>47762457
So it's Apple's fault that most computer manufacturers refuse to make laptops with a decent resolution?

>excluding 120GB SSDs
Oh no, I'm sure those 8 GB are really the major difference between an apparently overpriced Macbook, surely OP did this JUST to exclude [insert your favorite brand here]. I'm sure the reason he chose one of the most common processors was the same one. That fag!
>>
>>47762457

It's not that specific really. 128GB is really the minimum acceptable. Plus who even uses 120GB. And I wanted 1440x900 of higher cause that's my current resolution. Core i3 is a totally reasonable minimum for CPU.
>>
>>47760957
Not from Newegg you didn't. I'd like the name of your dealer though.
>>
>>47762164
Thy were going to but then they realized its a gimmick on a laptop / iMac.

When they were messing around with it they realized their arms got super tired extending out to touch a screen. And that they didn't get things done faster. It was slower. Then the whole smudging of screens that are connected to something meant to get work done wasn't great.

That's why they went the trackpad route and the magic mouse.
