The only way ive seen to programatically access iMessage on a mac is through applescript, and the message received handlers are pretty broken in the latest version of OS X. Theoretically you could access the core libraries behind the gui, but they are undocumented as far as i know.

I've run some tests with this. Having a few android/windowsphone friends and 802.11ac and n networks (for my iPhone 5/6+ family) we tried messaging from macbook to iPhone on wifi, iPhone to other iPhone (on wifi, with cellular data) and compared it with iMessage disabled. Even brought in iPhones from other carriers (over their data). iMessages seemed to get sent/recieved faster than SMS for the most part across the board. From a handful of seconds to nearly a few dozen. Not trying to shill, there were sporadic and just sort of a random 5 minutes a day when we had certain people as company (since everyone has a smart phone)
