Why aren't you using a netbook?

>implying, for even a SECOND, that netbooks are dead
>>
Call me when netbooks can handle any games better than CS1.6. Until then, shut the fuck up about them.

Nowadays you can play PC games on fucking Windwos tablets.
>>
I got my first gen aspire one out of the closet yesterday. I had forgotten how small it was, planning to get an SSD and start using it again.
>>
Tell me this first: why should I get a <10" shitbox when I can get a 11-14" superthin ultrabook that weighs even less?
>>
>>47578262
>tfw poor
>>
>>47578262
I own a Lemote Yeeloong.
>>
>>47578262
I have one that I take to work with me, that way it doesn't really matter if some nigger steals it.
>>
i have one and i use it to watch twitch streams when i go to bed (blessed be the guy who made livestreamer)

also you can put it on your chest and watch pov porn
>>
I have that exact acer aspire one
it comes wit a 3g card, thing is so choice
got the video card overclocked and an SSD inside
>>
I have an Acer aspire one, which needs a battery and cherger... Where do I find these cheap?
>>
>>47578307
because that's a thousand dollars of difference
>>
Do they still make netbooks? What's a good modern netbook then?
>>
>>47578262
Because pointless. These things are now like more expensive, weaker tablets for the most part.

Never mind that I carry a smartphone, I don't really need another portable media viewer / web browser thing.

What I do want on top of it is processing power and a big screen at home, both of which is not a netbook.
>>
is the x200s a netbook?
>>
>>47578262
Because I use a hybrid tablet
>>
>Want to buy baytrail netbook
>every single one has non replaceable battery and RAM
What happened?
>>
But I am. I've gone though 2 Aspire Ones.

Netbooks are preferable to tablets.
>>
>>47578538
>weaker tablets

nigger wat
>>
Because I have a refurbished Galaxy Note Pro 12.2" that I got for $400. I hate Samsung as a rule, but this thing is fantastic. Adequately fast, fair screen, microSD slot, and digitizer, all for roughly the price of the Nexus 9.
>>
>>47578579
> netbook
> replaceable RAM
Has that been the case for a decade or more?

Anyhow, the design is for tablets now. They exactly use the same bay trails etc.
>>
>>47578611
>They exactly use the same bay trails etc.
The ones used in netbooks support 64 bit so you can install windows 7
>>
But I am.

Acer c720 with fedora.
>>
>>47578601
Yes. Most devices marketed as *netbooks* are weaker tablets.

I guess there are a few that are $1000 or something that are pretty fast, but overall it's that.
>>
>>47578611
a lot of them will have a ram slot but most of them won't support over 6/8gb total ram
>>
Yes, well I've got two but one is broken. The other one I use as a backup in case the main computer fails
>>
>>47578628
Yes. Actually, half of them -even the ones directly importable from China- come with win 8.1 and the option to put Android on.
>>
>>47578262
>being in denial
Tablets won faggot.
>>
You can get a second hand X220 for the price of a netbook, the netbook market no longer makes a lot of sense.
I had one of those generic 1GB RAM / 1024x600 / Atom N270 netbooks when they were a thing and it was a nice device when it came to battery life but slow as fuck. 10" is also really uncomfortable if you are larger than the average chink.
>>
>>47578633
> there are a few that are $1000 or something that are pretty fast
the thinkpad 11e is around $500 and puts all tablets to shame

pretty sure there are cheaper brands with similar specs
>>
>>47578262
my tablet lasts twelve hours on battery and i have crappy chinese usb keyboard case to use with it. This tablet also works flawlessly with chrooted debian, including hardware gpu acceleration.

Unfortunately i fucked up my tablet. It was a bloody frankenstein, soldered million times, with female pins as charging port - and at some point i've sticked my bare male 12v pins that worked as my charger connector into usb, frying it in result. Without keyboard, linux tablet is useless.

So, if i would want to have small computer device with great battery life, i would get an tablet, not netbook.
>>
Becase
Atom or equivalent processor
non removable battery
Issues in upgrading RAM
Problem with hardware replacement

Better buy a tablet instead
>>
>>47578654
That one is marketed as "laptop". It has a HDD/SSD.

Not sure it's all that much better than a $200 even, except in the obvious way that you can upgrade RAM and storage. The display and the chipset actually seem worse, on a glance.
>>
>>47578719
>It has a HDD/SSD

so did most netbooks

>>
Are you the guy that sits at the front of my uni lectures with a netbook?
>>
>>47578830
chromebooks are netbooks
>>
>>47578262
I use an 8 inch chink windows tablet anon
>>
>>47578830
So. What are a good chromebook to put linux on?
>>
11 inch whatever-book, no moving parts after ssd installed.
>>
>>47578262
That netbook runs faster off a SD card than the SSD
>>
>>47578830
>install Linux on the C720 which supposedly has the best compatibility
>have to manually create touchpad config files because the default is so shit that it won't fucking pick up your finger touching it
>have to manually create configs to bind and unbind networking, sound, and EHCI hardware otherwise suspend breaks everything
>have to manually tweak a bunch of other shit as well
>flimsy construction that resulted in a broken screen

And unless I find a modern "netbook" with an IPS display, hardware good enough to handle 1080p video without stuttering, 4 GB of RAM, an SSD (even 16GB is okay because I use mostly external storage anyway), the ability to install whatever OS I choose, and ACTUAL out of the box hardware compatibility with Linux, I'd rather get an X220 off of ebay.
>>
>>47578867
Just get this http://www.teclast.com/en/zt/X98Air/
>>
>>47578867
all that is fixed if you update the kernel
i should know, I'm using one
>>
are there any netbooks that have a decent screen(1600-900 minimum) and run an actual OS nowadays?

I loved my old toshiba netbook, thing never needed to be charged and could just be tossed around like nothing. I think it was my best laptop I ever owned.
>>
>>47578892
Which kernel? Because last I checked on 3.19, all of the above still required manual tweaking to fix, and I was using the JLewis BIOS.
>>
>>47578728
Marketing has made different things "Netbooks" over time. Either way, that one is a laptop, not a netbook.

Besides, even if we go to things marketed as laptops - which often are a lot better: As I already said this one isn't really that much better. Comparison with a popular tablet from a store that I use:

Thinkpad 11e vs Teclast X98 Air
- $500 vs $200
- 11" 1366 x 768 vs 9.7" 2048*1536
- Celeron N2940 vs Atom Z3736F
- 500GB HDD or 128GB SSD 2.5" drive vs 32GB NAND chip storage with optional microSD
- 2 or 4GB RAM expandable vs 2GB RAM fixed
- 1 USB 3.0 + 1 USB 2.0 vs 1 USB 2.0

Are you going to pay 2.5 *times* as much for the built-in storage, a bit more RAM, an extra USB port even with the drawback of the much worse display and 3+ times higher weight? Most people probably won't...
>>
>>47578936
i used it to illustrate that you needed a $1000 netbook like device to beat tablets as idiotic

i also mentioned you could get similar specs for a lot less you blind bastard
>>
Because I bought an ultra book. I'm not poor so price for something I use that often is not really an issue.
>>
>>47578936
For as much as you're shilling that tablet, you can't seem to tell me what Linux support on it is like. I have literally no reason to use Windows on hardware that I don't intend to run games on when for all other uses Linux is wholly superior, especially with Intel graphics.
>>
shit specs, shit screen, uber shit trackpad
>>
Because I use a Thinkpad X60s with a proper full size keys, just as much power and portability while being sturdier to boot.
>>
>>47578952
>i used it to illustrate that you needed a $1000 netbook like device to beat tablets as idiotic
Sorry, but you mentioned a $500 laptop.

I was specifically saying that in general, devices marketed as "netbooks" are crappier than tablets unless they are like $1000+.

THAT was what I said. You can't disprove that by mentioning devices marketed as "laptops".

I too know that laptops - maybe with less battery life, heavier and hdd/sdd can be cheaper than $1000 and faster than a tablet.
>>
>>47578262
Recommend me some netbook then.
>>
>>47578970

This. Also needs an SSD to be bearable.
>>
>>47578957
> For as much as you're shilling that tablet, you can't seem to tell me what Linux support on it is like.
Eh, what? It's the first time I mentioned the tablet.

And either way, why do you need me to look up if something has Linux support? Do it yourself!
>>
>>47578985
>1 hour battery life
>>
>>47579002
>implying a netbook wasn't just a marketing buzzword for a cheap laptop

the autism is strong with you
>>
>>47578867
I'm posting from a C720 right now, the only config file I had to create was for the touchpad and that was just a straightup copy paste from the arch wiki. Just use networkmanager for networking and pulseaudio for sound and you should be fine.
>>
>>47579048
Nope. It's a marketing buzzword, but it had various attributes over time.

They had Atom or similar CPU (alternatively, sometimes also just a low-end CPU that wouldn't allow much more than web browsing). Also long battery life, no optical drive, are lightweight (1.2kg or less maybe), small(er than standard 14-15") or at least very thin, had no HDD/SSD.

It's fuzzy between manufacturers, but "netbook" mostly means something else than "cheap".
>>
>>47578262
netbooks are pretty much dead
>>
i use my old netbook as a openbsd wifi AP. works for me
>>
>>47578495
HP Stream 11. Bought one last month and can take it everywhere I go. Just buy a 32gb sd card with it.

That sounds extremely hacky, I like it.
>>
>>47579184
>HP Stream 11

>not buying an Acer C720
>>
>>47578262

They're still around, just lumped in with ultrabooks.
>>
>>47579188
That's ... pretty usual. You can even do it on Windows, it doesn't even require BSD or Linux (even if it probably makes more sense overall to do it on the latter 'cause less unnecessary load).
>>
>>47578654
>thinkpad 11e
>No trackpoint
