As minuscule as the chance for the "year of the Linux desktop" happening was, you can say goodbye to even that. You could have seized the opportunity to mass-market Linux on the basis of being free-of-charge, but now Microsoft has taken that selling point for themselves.

You snoozed, you lost. Windows is forever now. Good game.

It's a bold move for sure.
Sign of desperation. They're so desperate to keep their outdated business model intact (monopoly) that they're going to cut sources of income to do it.

Not like consumers were big sources of income anyway. It was business clients with a bajallion computers to buy windows for that were the big buyers.

But they buy apple now so microsoft is delaying the inevitable. They're bleeding themselves to keep on a road that's unsustainable.
Once you lose the monopoly you can't get it back.
>>
>>47079773

No he doesnt.

im a big MS fanboi, but he is almoast as dumb as ballmer.

Seriously lets look at some of the mistakes.

Instead of improving what we all know and love, they are so focused on changing it.

>the new UI sucks (options etc, flat plain screen, with ugly text)
> removal of control panel in favour of settings menu. (why? we all knew how to use control panel, just fix it and make it even easier instead of changing everything AGAIN)
> the new start menu feels bloated and inneficiant compared to win7 start menu
> trashcan icon (topkek)
> BLUE LOGIN SCREEN
> explorer is becoming more and more complicated and with the stupid ribbon shit.
> Office, check the difference in UI for office 2013/2016 and 2007.(2007 edition was so easy and user friendly to use. Outlook is a nightmare now.

and there is probably a shit ton more i cant think of right now. But what MS needs to do is install Yosemite and just fucking see how they do it, everything with Yosemite is better right now except for their file explorer which is just lol worthy.

and what they should do is just take what we are used to and just improve it instead of change it.
>>
>>47079850

What a poor debating point.
Why the hell do people care so much if anyone uses Linux anyway?
Proudly posting this from an Arch Linux box, but I really don't mind if anyone else uses Linux.
>>
For the love of fuck would people stop talking about "Year of the Linux Desktop". That is the worst thing that could ever happen. Don't people see the reason Linux is so good is because the fucking normalfags are elsewhere? This news is fucking great. I want as many faggots as possible using Windows so they don't shit up Linux. If they move to Linux we will get all the fucking crapware, bloat and viruses from Windowsland. Being obscure is what gives us power. The software is good because its made by good people, don't get the fucking hipsters in. Its already bad enough that we have Skype and Steam on Linux. Those are not positives. We shouldn't want more of this shit. Besides what the fuck do you care what other people use? It gives us something to laugh at. Fuck them. If they don't wanna help themselves why help them? Stop telling people to install Linux its stupid but don't help them with their Windows problems, they fucking asked for it.

This is yet more reason for me to stay away from Windows 10. Windows being free is unlikely to change much, it was always free for pirates and it always came with normalfag prebuilt computers anyway.

Linux is getting better every day and every day more games are being ported, on top of that it'll receive Vulkan, same as Windows. If you like being part of Microsoft's ecosystem... err, I mean botnet then go right ahead and install it but personally I'll continue to avoid leaking any personal info to Google/MS and cie as much as I possibly can. At the point I'm at, it's not even a question of privacy, I just no longer want to support these big companies controlling everything, especially the internet. So why would I use their products?

>>47081285
True that, they're looking to kickstart their shitty "app" store because that's where the money is going to be. Cortana is also looking like a big privacy issue with people telling her all kinds of shit and it passing through Microsoft servers because of course they signed the terms saying their searches will be utilized to make Cortana better without even glossing over it.

>>
>>47079540

Doesn't matter, if the game requires the DX11 API you're not gonna get away with having DX9 installed.
>>
>>47079334
Isn't it obvious. Cortana is being brought to the desktop with windows 10 as well as ios and android now. If you've been on /g/ lately you would of seen a thread talking about how MS may be making windows phone 10 easily flashable to android devices. Their goal is to saturate the market with their voice assistant and make money off the data that it retrieves. I doubt they will hve much succcess on mobile but if they manage to push a large amount of users to windows 10 they wiĺl be making a lot of money off cortana.

Upgrade copies are useless for fresh installs. Unless they offer it, license free, in a similar fashion to OEM copies, or like linux and other OS's that you can download the full product from the net, It won't be quite right for system builders and enthusiasts. And I'm afraid that's just not going to happen.

...conditions, stipulations, prerequisites. It's always the same every time they do this. You'd figure people would have learned this by now. They will never offer the full product, freely downloadable from the net. The end.

The problem with the chart is that the slices may overlap because of multi-OS systems. OSX's slice may overlap with Windows just like Linux's. Plus some preinstalled Windows machines may not even be running Windows at all but Loonix yet are still counted as Windows.

Yeah, kids didn't understand the strategy.
> not selling licences anymore
> revenue comes from the app market
> revenue comes from microtransactions within apps

Their strategy is to put their app store on all of your PCs. The more you have bought on your account, the more dependent you are.

If you bought for 200$ on apple app store, what will be your next phone? iPhone, because you won't throw all that money.

Also, CRM, Enterprise, Office, OEM and Azure makes them billions. They’re using the consumer to lock them into their platforms so they can extract more value out of them and grow their other businesses.

Windows is a small part of their revenue model (consumer upgrades). Giving Windows away for free as an upgrade is such a small part of the overall picture. OEM’s will still pay to license Windows.

IOW, Microsoft are once-again an also-ran. Bing, native IP stack, Zune, 1st-class 64 bit, SkyDrive, HTML5, Nokia/WinPhone, Surface, memtester, bootloader menu, ReFS, ARM support and now a 4th-place app store.

They must have heard the term "fashionably late" and decided to see how far they could take it.
>>
>>47079238
If Microsoft is going to make Windows free to use, they should make it free to use. This legal grey area shit where you're ok to use it for free until you're not and then the BSA kicks down your door seems like a protection racket.

I have to think that having a product which isn't free, but which they're encouraging people to take and use for free in order to prevent competing products from gaining a foothold might get the attention of anti-monopoly watch dogs.

>also where is win9?

The explanation I heard was that too many retarded developers had been version-checking the OS and using the partial string "Windows 9" to exclude Windows 95/98 from support. Thus Windows 9 was getting falsely identified as Windows 95/98.
>>
>>47085990
Except that was bullshit. The real reason: 10 sounds better than 9, because marketing.

Really in the end it's Microsoft who's losing at this point, they just cannot compete and use shady business practices anymore.

They've been cuckolded into turning their product from an expensive scam to a freeware operating system. They are forced to adjust to a world where free (gratis) software is the norm.

Microsoft is transitioning their conventional software business model to Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) model; they are becoming a predominantly services company with subscription services like Office 365, Xbox Live, Xbox Music, etc.; they've trademarked Windows 365, reportedly based around the Office 365 subscription service.

I thought Valve's primary reasoning for creating their own Linux distro with SteamOS was to avoid Microsoft's Windows licensing fees. Now what's the point besides a performance boost and a more focused experience? Will it be worth the effort to developers?

>>
>>47086661
Microsoft isn't making Windows free to OEMs, and even if they were that wouldn't remove the need for SteamOS as a platform outside of Microsoft's ability to force a decade of stagnation.

All Microsoft is doing here is saying that if you pirate Windows they probably won't send the BSA after you. At least not until you start to make money and then you better believe that they're going to get every dime in licensing fees.
>>
Who the fuck pays for a windows license anyways? This way they can keep users dependent on their products
