This isn't anything new.. I remember reading an article about Norway or Sweden experiment with something like this, where you could use the phone to hail a bus. Obviously the further the bus has to detour to get/drop you off would be a higher cost for you.

Jesus christ, in Norway I spend like $12 just to get to town (20 minutes bus ride) on the shittiest public transport bus you can imagine.

>I like being able to see where the bus is etc, and online accounts and ticketless riding is neat

yeah lots of that shit is already rolled out.

But some cities are a huge fuck up when it comes to doing things
Like my City and surrounding area, has the presto card
http://news.nationalpost.com/2012/12/13/presto-card-fare-system-will-cost-700-million-to-implement-says-ontarios-auditor-general/
that is just for the fucking card.. no other real improvements

My city has built some new bus stations that have a clock and display when the next bus is due, those are kinda neat.

Personally I hope to see driverless buses soon, since half the cost of running a transit system is labor.
The current system can be wildly inefficient.
There have been lots of times when the bus is running 'fast' and just sits and waits somewhere for 5-10 minutes because it needs to stick to a set schedule.

If and or when Uber becomes an established thing, you had better believe that they'll start resorting to said "crony capatilism" in order to keep their competiton down.

All that wide eyed idealism only matters when you're new and looking to claw your away up among established competion. Once you ARE the establishment, if you don't want yourself to go out of business, then you'll do whatever you can to maintain your position.

Do any of you have automated buses yet? Holland is starting to implement them now in certain places they're kinda neat.

Bus stop has a button that you press and a bus will come to pick you up. You can check in at a panel where the bus stops and check out when you leave the bus at a similar panel.

When you enter the bus you press a button for a destination and sit down.

Kinda awkward though cause it's small so you'll most likely get someone sitting directly across from you looking at you.
>>
>>47077276
>you'll most likely get someone sitting directly across from you looking at you.
Like every bus/metro ever?
>>
>>47077316
Not really. In a bus/metro there's always the option to stand. This thing doesn't allow that really there's no room for it just seats.

The system is hobo proof. If you only press the button a bus will show up yeah but its doors won't open unless you check in at the panel. If you don't pick a destination, it will simply go on its way as usual. You're not disrupting anything by pressing the button.

>If you only press the button a bus will show up yeah

So this magical bus route isn't disrupted by going to stops it doesn't need to go to?

>>47077380
kek, wtf
>>
>>47077477
No, there are several automated buses on this closed circuit which means that no matter what, a bus will show up anyway. Pressing the button is just a way for the bus to know that someone is there to be picked up so it'll pick up the pace to decrease the time people stand waiting.

The destination buttons are inside of the bus, which you can't get into without checking in.

Some cities have 0 public transportstion and no bike friendly infrastructure. I live in Orlando, FL which is basically just a big Disney World concrete hellhole. There's no trains, subways, or convenient buses. If you manage to get on the bus that only comes every 2 hours, you'll probably have to sit in a piss filled seat. Roads have no bike lanes and are usually just giant 70 mph highways for cars only. There's no practical way to live here without a car unless you're a NEET.

It's cheaper if you buy in bulk (like 5 tickets at once) then it's about $3 per ride.

Usually if you have a car and live in the city you buy bulk to be prepared for whatever.

Single tickets are mostly only for tourists.

A luxury bus system? I don't see what the problem is if there is demand for it.

Also, what SF and Silicon Valley needs is a subway system comparable to NYC.

So what's worse /g/, having to travel in a bus full of niggers or a bus full of hipsters?

I think hipsters is worse becasue they might try to start a conversation.

Another if-only-we-had-a-shiny-new-toy solution out of Silicon Valley. I guess that's what happens when an entire community decides to dump the wisdom of traditional business planning for "hip," eternal-startup culture.

Why is this allowed? I hope someone rams them
>>
>>47082572
There usually aren't seatbelts in a bus.
You're also allowed to walk around while it's moving.

Apparently it's safe/

Won't ever happen, too spread out, not high enough population density anywhere in the bay for it

Bay area just ends up with a hodge-podge of multiple systems Bart/muni/caltrain being the main ones then essentially each county's own bus system, capitol corridor train, light rail etc

and add on top of that the myriad of tech companies that bus their workers around - at least in the areas more dense in tech campuses all the companies share shuttles to be more efficient

At least they're naive and not looking to steal my shit and randomly scream bible tracts due to their mental instabilities.

Only niggers and homeless people who mutter to themselves ride the buses around here.

Why not use this money to create a planning & organizing agency that works with the State to fix the public transportation system THATS ALREADY IN PLACE, then use that model as an example for other states.

Plan things you have to do before work and this shouldn't ever be a problem. I've never had this problem.

> people who dont want to contribute to traffic congestion and air pollution
Nobody gives a fuck about this. Some people may not want to BE in traffic, but they certainly 100% do not give a fuck about contributing to it.

>people who enjoy a social setting.
social setting? is that a fucking joke? nobody socializes on public transit. They keep their eyes glued to their phones and wait for the next stop.

The only legit reason is not wanting to be in traffic.

In NZ, I can travel the 150km between Hamilton and Auckland for $4 NZD, which is like, 3USD (or less).
These buses have aircon, wifi and power sockets, too. They're also double deckers, it's based as fuck.
