Is it possible to keep all of my dotfiles in ~/.config? Currently I have a bunch just sitting in ~/ and I'd rather move them into their own directory, but then the programs themselves can't see them and they revert to default settings or just throw a hissy fit.

Most people use custom/copied riced CSS for their firefox. You can use themes and stuff too. Look up stylish, there's some decent browser themes that you can apply with that.

Same thing for me, too. I feel like my .xinitrc stopped working properly, or I didn't set it up properly, because I was trying to set the DPMS mode off in X.

You can use:

xrdb ~/.Xdefaults

To apply changes, or -merge if you don't want to destroy unset settings.

It could be your display manager is being a piece of doo-doo and not saving your settings the way you had it before. I don't use a display manager myself, just "startx" after I log in to a TTY, and I usually have to use xrdb to apply changes, or every time I (re)start Xorg.
