It's not brilliant. They could have easily built traditional USB ports, more type C, the displayport out, etc. into the power adapter, but they didn't, because fuck you.

Stuff like this shows me, how much money is to make with peoples stupidity. People will actually pay for it. Everytime i try to convince someone not to buy overpriced stuff, people start to defend their decision. Nobody likes to feel stupid. But then they are amazed, how well my used ebay laptop and my used smartphone work and start questioning their purchase.

More ports would have increased the overall weight and the size of the logic board, leaving less room for battery.

It was more of an aesthetic and lifestyle choice by Apple. The way they envision (force) you to use the Macbook is with the cloud for storage and data transfer, and bluetooth or WiFi for everything else.

If you are hooked into the Apple ecosystem this is not a problem for you. Apple people will already have an Airport, the Apple wireless keyboard, and magic mouse. Just need the one port to connect to your Thunderbolt Display and you are good. Use Airplay or bluetooth for everything else.

Don't need an sd slot because you are using your iPhone as a camera. IF you do need one or anything else, it is attached to your Thunderbolt display at home.

I think that are actually breaking a pattern by using an open standard for the one port. It would be more like apple to use the Lightning or Thunderbolt port so that you would half to buy a licensed product to connect.

How can all you not see that this was a design announcement? Apple isn't trying to sell the shit out of this laptop, in fact if they updated the MBA with a retina screen (which could have easily happened) this thing wouldn't sell.

What it IS, is a platform for future Intel Y-series CPUs. As the 14nm fabrication matures and they move to 10nm, Apple can keep reusing the same design of this laptop easily for the next 5-7 years. $0 has to go into design, that saves them a shitton of money.

Skylake will have Rezence wireless charging capabilities BUILT-IN to the fucking SoC. That's why there's only one port. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rezence_(wireless_charging_standard)

>Power transfer up to 50W
Gee...that sounds awfully similar to the current wired charging adapter shipping with the Macbook.

When Intel moves to 10nm with full DDR4, the battery life will start shooting through the roof. That's why they spent a ton of time talking about physical battery design in the keynote. Do it once, and you've got a device that you can plug and play Intel's SoC's on for the next 5-7 years and be worthwhile enough to justify the Apple upgrade cycle. Apple's releases will be synchronized with Intel's (that's why Intel is cutting the Broadwell release cycle short and moving to Skylake).

>>46996171
Am I seriously the only one here who goes weeks without plugging in two things at the same time? Including the fucking power adapter.
>>
>>46998668
It's not even like USB-C isn't a great idea, but just imagine that for every device you want to connect, rather than just a single unplug/plug, you now have to unplug/plug/unplug/plug.

Assuming you only have the power cable in half of the time you're using it, you'd still up the number of connections to the port by 50%.

Also keep in mind that coaxial power connectors/magsafe ports are designed to take more connect cycles than anything else.
Even if you use adapters, unless you leave them plugged in while you transport the thing, that's still another plug/unplug cycle every time you get it out.

This thing will have the lifetime of a fucking smartphone.

Apple is also basically subsidizing the design costs onto the backs of the iSheep that are going to by this 1st gen PoS. It's kind of hilarious but at least it'll mean the price should come down in the future if they do reuse this hardware design for a while.

>unplug/plug/unplug/plug.
Your apple mouse and keyboard connect via bluetooth. You no longer need thumb drives because we can share files through the internet. All you have left is a charger. If you want an external monitor, you're probably doing something more serious and would also want the extra power of the macbook pro.

>>

I bet they'll stick a fucking USB type b connector on it or something equally deprecated.

If it's on the end of the plug, it'll make the plug bulky and the macfags will cry.

If it's on the transformer, it'll have shitloads of fucking interference with all that extra cable and being located right next to the power lines.
Also consider if the port busts you have to buy a whole new power supply. Yeah it's cheaper than a new laptop, but it's still a fucking con.

The only reasonable option is you have everything go through a hub, and fuck knows how that'll manage the 12V line without frying everything

I think what he's saying is that what Apple have done here are make a new and shittier version of the Air without naming it as such. The fact that there still is an Air at the same price but with better specs drives home his point. There's no reason to be impressed with a shitty reboot of a concept just because it's slightly thinner and lighter than its own line's predecessors.

Nobody doing serious work relies on wireless keyboards and mice.
Having to constantly have a pack of batteries on hand, or carry around yet more charging equipment is a fucking joke, nevermind the latency.
I would actually rather just stick with the trackpad than use wireless input methods that can cut out at any second, and I absolutely hate trackpads.

Removable storage is still a thing, and isn't going anywhere. We had floppies, then CDs, SD cards and now USB sticks. The format might change, but removable storage is still necessary for more people.
I'm not saying that people need 10 things connected at once, but if and when they do, having to take off the power and replace it later is putting yet more strain on the most vital port.

Imagine if someone made a phone that got rid of the microusb/lightning port and just had power/data through the 3.5mm audio jack.
You can't put every IO through a single port and not consider the extra strain you are putting on your only fucking option.

Well if I plug into my microUSB port with slightly too much force, I can disable my sole charging port too.

Just to be clear, my point is not about the relative fragility of 3.5mm and microUSB connectors, because the post to which I was replying wasn't about that either. It was about strain on a port, and the consequences of failure for a single multi-function port. This applies to both phones as they are today and this alternative possibility that I found cool.

>>
>>46999436
Yes but you have to replace the batteries 3 times a year and it fucks up your workflow for the next 3 weeks. /s

Wireless mice and keyboards are great. Less wires to piss you off if more than a worthwhile trade off for charging a handful of times per year.

I'd even say the Mac trackpads are actually bearable for serious work, which is great if you're not at your desk with the computer connected to an external display.
>>
>>46996318
That's actually a good idea. So of course Apple won't do that.
>>
>>46998609
>if I use percentages it'll seem like a big deal when the difference in size is in the millimeters and the difference in weight is less than half a pound

You'd have a point if it were a difference between a much larger laptop and the Macbook, but it's not.
>>
>>46999392
Out of my entire post, that is what you choose to pick out?
The latency isn't massive and most people probably don't notice it or care, but it is still a drawback I'd prefer to not have.
People are always going on about how apple trackpads are so much greater than everyone elses, but then it's "not a problem" if wireless peripherals are slow?
A selling point when it works, and not important when it doesn't, as always with Apple.

>>46999436
The frequency of changing them is not the issue, the random nature of them going is what bothers me.
Why have something so "portable" and easy to use "on the go" if a vital part of that can just stop working at any time?
It'd be like having a car with a magical 1000 gallon tank, but no fuel gauge.

No. I don't even remember when I plugged anything but power in my laptop. I would figure this is also true for 90% of ultraportable users. That's what apple figured when they made it.
>>
>>46999259
omg xdddd that's so funny xdd
ur so random ;3333
>>
>>46999679

The good thing about Apple is that they give shy numbers for battery life. So, when Dell says their XPS 13 lasts 15 hours, you can expect to get half of that. When Apple says you get 12 hours out of the MBA, you will get 15 hours. This isn't because Apple is nice to their customers but because they were once sued for too optimistic numbers.
>>
>>46999792
I usually see people with two/three devices
1. charge cable
2. USB mouse
3. occasionally a thumb drive
if the mouse is Bluetooth then 2 isn't a problem, but external portable storage might be.

again 2 ports would have been a much better solution.
>>
>>46998777
>>46999792
I made this same point in an earlier thread, that I don't plug things into my laptop and I don't think it's too uncommon these days. And I'm not even using an ultraportable. It's not that I go out of my way to avoid it, but that the hardware and service options have readily replaced the need.

>>
>>46996171

As if we can't get enough of this laptop, the rumour mill is off saying that they invented the USB-C standard. I smell a huge pile of shit here, I really do.

>by extension Thunderbolt.

Wut?

Thunderbolt is external PCIe, which means direct access to RAM.
You can't have that through USB.

Thunderbolt is dead, NSA cries.
>>
>>46996171

>>

>>
>>47000500
If you have to use a mouse at all. Most things should be doable without ever leaving the keyboard. It's faster that way.
>>
>>47000500
If you honestly think this then it's pretty clear you've never used an Apple trackpad.

Where was your gender indicated, BITCH?
>>
>>46999154
No, it really was about the relative fragility of the connectors.

Nice try, dumbass. MicroUSB is much less prone to eating shit than a fucking 3.5mm jack.

Do you really think apple took out USB ports to save costs? Like are you this retarded?
>>
SPOILER

Next time Apple will announce a new MacBook PRO.
It will cost $1800 base, $3000 with max stats
The max stats will be average compared to an acer 1/3 the cost.

So remind me again why that makes it ok to charge 1200 USD for something that could be made to satisfy casual users like yourself for under 600.
>>
>>46999520
Are you from the past? My logitech mouse lasts more than a year and its advertised with 180days battery life.

Yeah, because because having USB 2 ports on my PC totally prevented me from using the USB 3 ones. Just like my HDD prevents me from using an SSD and my DVD disc drive prevents me from using Bluray. Man, why am I so behind in technology? I wish someone would force me to use newer technology. I know! I'll go buy a new Macbook™ from Apple so that I can use the lastest tech!

Hell they could have just added a second one, that way I can charge it and plug a new fancy c-usb drive in without using a dongle. But no, Tim Crook decides that they won't make enough cash off 17000 18k gold watches.

Supposedly we will be moving to a mostly wireless world.

Wireless keyboards, mice, storage, monitors, no ethernet, etc.
