It's probably worth the risk for Nvidia. It's not like they're short on budget. If the pricing is right they might be able to sell this thing. No one expected the original Wii to sell either. But they shouldn't focus on high end graphics and performance only in their advertising imo.

>>
>>46845388
They promise a 50+ game library and new games will be released every week which will probably be ports but that's not too bad for a new console. Of course these games aren't new so you might have played some of them already but for the casual gamer this doesn't matter
>>

>>46844710

>>
Hope the bootloader is unlocked, it will make a nice linux pc.

While the first version is underwhelming hardware wise if they update it yearly it should beat the PS4 specs by next year.

Can the xbone and PS4 go down to $199 in time? Samsung is claiming 10nm in 2016.
>>
>>46845133
The thing about the Wii is they had the Nintendo brand behind it, a word that is a synonym for videogame console with a lot of regular people.

Nvidia may as well be another random chink company as far as they're concerned. The people familiar with the brand aren't going to want it either as a game playing platform or as an android box, which they'd be savvy enough to shop around for for less since they'd just be watching movies with it.

It's going to be a disaster.
>>
>>46844891

>grid

those games are not android native, you have to buy a subscription to stream/play them (like onlive)

if you click the android tab on that page you will see the android native games

this is basically ouya 2.0 and onlive 2.0
>>

So did the WiiU and Gamecube and Virtualboy. Those must have sold gr- oh, they sold like shit.

>>
>>46847311

>Muh HEVC tho
No word on HEVC for SteamLink, but HEVC looks like shit anyway, it's like YIFY in every bitrate.

>I was never going to buy it as a console device, nor will I buy SteamLink for a vidya device, I only want either as a cheap HTPC box.
>>
>>46847687
They announced a while back that they were going to be stepping away from the mobile market.
None of their chips could be competitive in performance per watt so they weren't getting any design wins. They're trying to find a market to dump all their chips on so they justify the R&D spent by their mobile division. It has yet to be profitable for them, and they want to recoup their losses in the long run.
So they're shilling their latest Tegra X1 as a car computer/infotainment center, and as a smart TV Android game console.
>>
>>46847695
PS4's has hardware H.264 encoding and decoding support, and the GPU could easily decode H.265 with an update.
>>
>>46847720

>>
>>46847695

No HEVC at all though (well, you could make a decoder in OpenCL, but it'd use far more power than the SIP block decoding HEVC on Maxwell)
However HEVC is a sham, it looks like shit at every bitrate.

H.264 is god for now, VP9 will take the crown.

>>
http://www.anandtech.com/show/8460/amd-radeon-r9-285-review/4

>With this newest generation of UVD, AMD is finally catching up to NVIDIA and Intel in H.264 decode capabilities. New to UVD is full support for 4K H.264 video, up to level 5.2 (4Kp60). Yeah they won't show CPU benchmarks because the A8X wipes the floor with everything else on the market

Plus the A8X is actually in mobile devices and has been for 6 months. By the time a tablet actually exists using the X1 the A9X will be out. Also compare the power consumption of Tegra to the A8X, it's hilarious how inefficient Nvidia SoCs are compared to Apple and Qualcomm chips.

That's the peak consumption, and A8X does have a significantly higher draw. That 2.5W draw is probably the average draw of the regular A8 with one less core and a GPU half the size found in the iPhone 6.

The X1 may still have a higher power draw, but that's when it's running considerably faster than the A8X. Downclock it to equal performance and this is the result:

NOPE 8w was the entire platform power for the iPad Air, not power draw for the SoC.
The Air2 gets equal or better battery life with a smaller battery because the SoC draws less power.

Tegra is not faster period, it's got less memory bandwidth and gets spanked by the A8 and A8X in CPU benchmarks. It's much slower per clock cycle and there's a reason NO ONE has adopted it outside of the Nexus 9 (which based on the reception was a massive fucking mistake)

Face it Nvidiashill, people don't want Tegra. Qualcomm makes more efficient and cost effective SoCs.

You can keep comparing unreleased products tested in a vacuum to products already on the market if it makes you feel good though.

That isn't a 4w power delta, its about a 3.5w delta. The SoC isn't the only chip in the system that draws more power underload.
That also isn't the iPad Air2 with A8X.

>In our first test, we see that the iPad Air 2 is about roughly equivalent to the original iPad Air for WiFi web browsing.
>This is actually a bit surprising as the battery in the iPad Air 2 is approximately 84% of the iPad Air.
>This would mean that we would expect the iPad Air 2 to get around 8.4 hours of battery life in this test, which represents a 16% gain to efficiency.

The A8X draws less power, its a 2.5w chip. Thats its rated TDP, and thats what it sticks to.

You do realize that the SoC is not the only part that draws power and low stress power consumption is probably the most retarded way to test maximum power draw. Modern chips ether turn off parts that aren't needed or set them into a low power state. That plus the fact that the SoC in the original iPad Air is a 28nm part while the SoC in the iPad Air 2 is a 20nm part is more than enough to hide an increase in power consumption during low stress.
>>

You guys are fucking retarded. You keep going on about "NOGAEMS HURR DURR" and " ITS JUST LIKE ONLIVE DERP DE DOO" and "I CAN ALREADY WATCH NETFLIX FLAPPITY DAPPITY DUMP", but you're all missing the forest for the trees.

This is just about the first device powerful enough, and with the right software, to address a full range of entertainment needs in one device. Subscription services like Netflix, Hulu, Sling TV, and Google Play Music; emulators, particularly with the bundled controller (which is top notch -- I own one for my Shield Tablet); game-streaming (even if GRID sucks, you still have local streaming, which can be very useful); and sideloadable powerhouses like XBMC, all brought together for the first time into one compact, (relatively) affordable package.

This is a good thing. You shitlords are just too busy focusing on the things it doesn't do to notice what it does. It doesn't run Windows, so it can't play games by itself, but it has access to a wide range of Windows games. Streaming from GRID may not work, but local streaming still does. The device is a big step in the right direction.

tl;dr Y'all motherfuckers need critical thinking.

speaking about tegra exiting mobile, I read a comment from some nvidia fanboy on anandtech claiming that tegra wasn't a blunder, rather the opposite, and that nvidia was going to get billions by stepping up before competition on the driver assistant devices thanks to tegra, a market which, according to this analisys
http://ragingbull.com/forum/topic/1021687 should become worth billions in little time. I didn't know anything about this market and neither I do now, but is it legit? Is nvidia blazing everyone by putting tegra in more and more vehicles and making mad dosh?

Nvidia has two clients for their car computers. Audi and Tesla. Audi is offering it as an option on just a couple models starting in 2016.

Qualcomm is also doing the self driving computer thing, except they have Mercedes, Cadillac, and Honda as confirmed clients. Honda wants to put the systems in every vehicle. Qualcomm stated they had more partnerships in the works.

Nvidia has already failed at the self driving game. This isn't a market where brand fanboyism matters, the automanufacturers are going to choose the best system available, and they're not choosing Nvidia. The Tegra line is a resounding failure in every market.
>>
>>46850768
Nuc probably emulates better than this.
>>
>>46850875
It was at CES.
Nvidia made the whole presentation about car computers and nothing else. Qualcomm mentioned it for about 10 seconds, then proceeded to move on like it didn't even matter. They're getting involved in the medical industry, and making microcontrollers for smart LED lights. It was kind of funny seeing Qualcomm take a dump on Nvidia then act like they're so insignificant that they're not even seen as competition.
Thats the difference between a $5 billion company and a $30 billion+ company I guess.

The Shield already handles entertainment dramatically better and more intuitively than any Windows machine ever has. Most Windows games can be streamed from a Windows PC somewhere else in your house.

Also, I can confirm from my experience with the Shield Tablet that Shields make killer emulation boxes. You have access to most games from PSX on back, and that's a shitload of games.

>>46851169

And? Stop looking at its specs, and start looking at its functions. Yes, a PS3 may be more powerful. But can a PS3 play games in 1080p? Can a PS3 play the full range of Windows games when connected to a compatible PC? Does the PS3 support any and all TV-friendly Android apps? The answer to all of the above, just to save you some time, is 'No'. And that's why the Shield is good.
