Should I get a T410 or an X201? Specs are exactly the same (i5-560M w/ 4GB RAM), what does /g/ recommend and why?
>>
does anyone run a completely free thinkpad here? do you recommend it? what distro are you running? what do you use it for?

I'm talking about devices like the x60 with open hardware and stuff.
>>
>>46844114
I did until i fucked up a coreboot update and bricked the mb. Had libreboot+trisquel and an atheros wifi card.

I would reccomend it but beware the guy that makes coreboot is a massive autist. Getting straight answers from him is like talking to a child.
>>
>>46844143
Did you use it as your main computer?
>>
>>46844160
Yeah. Was a X60. Loved that thing. Maybe I'll fix it one day. Did everything i wanted.
>>
Is x201s really rare or something? I'm only seeing x201 results.
>>
>>46844181
Hope I'm not bothering you too much with my questions, just so curious about the concept. Is it powerful enough to run a 1080p screen? And if so, can you watch movies in that resolution?
>>
>>46844074
Do you want a small laptop or a medium-sized laptop? You should be able to decide this for yourself, anon.
>>
>>46844143
Other than "freedom", which is practically useless, what do you stand to gain by risking your mb by flashing a free bios?
>>
T410 1440x900 or X220 1366x768 ?
I'd like the extra resolution and size but battery life is also a concern. Help me /gee/.
>>
>>46844208
Not him, but I have an X60 Tablet. It'll drive 1080p over VGA no problem, but 1080p H.264 playback is too much for it.
>>
>>46844720
do you travel a lot on longer distances?
if not t410 or t420 if you do then x220
>>
>>46844846
does the T410 has more storage options / extended battery ?
>>
>>46844358
Less chance to be tracked by NSA/CIA/FBI/the previous owner
>>
>>46845487
it has option for 9cell battery dont know about storage, but t420 has better processor and intergrated graphics and can have 16gb of ram option while t410 only 8gb

Apple is better in many ways, worse in a few.
One way it's worse is the price, for 100 dosh I can grab an X200 and do all of my work, and chill (tv/anime/social medias). A macbook may cost more than 800 quid.
Ultimately I prefer thinkpads, but i recognize macbooks have better trackpads (which I don't use), screens (which I would love to have), and battery life (but only by a bit). Speeds are a bit better on thinkpads IMO as you can customize most things on linux, and pop an SSD in.

If you like your Apple, use your Apple. I'll be using my Thinkpad.

Hi guys, I have a silly problem that maybe you could help me with.

I have a T510 running Linux mint kde.

I have heavy thearing during video playback, but none noticeable one int he desktop.

I have tried activating the vsync in the nvidia control panel, activating the full screen repaints in the kde settings, and still same problems.

>>
I have few questions here.

I'm thinking about t420 or t420s

>they both have 1600x900 resolution, no 1080p option?
>maximum ram on t420 is 16gb, while on t420s is 8?
>Can I easily upgrade them to i7?
>t420s are avalible with USB 3.0? How that compares to USB 3.0 expresscard adapter?
>t420s have 720p camera?

Is it worth to get t420s because usb 3.0 out of the box?

Also, i readed that t420s have worse build quality, and less space for hhds and hdd caddy.
>>
>>46847039
Is that do-able?
Fellow x220 bro checking in.
>>
>>46845487
Sandy Bridge ThinkPads (and newer) support mSATA SSD's.

Older than that (such as a T410) can only use two regular 2.5" hard drives. One in the normal drive bay and one in an Ultrabay caddy.

But the X220 for example can also have two hard drives despite not having an Ultrabay. One 2.5" drive in the drive bay, and an mSATA SSD in the mSATA/mPCIe slot.

But that also means that a T420/T520/W520 could support three hard drives, one mSATA two 2.5", if that's what you really want.

T420s should have maximum of 16GB unless it has only one RAM slot...
>>Can I easily upgrade them to i7?
T420 yes, T420s I'm pretty sure the CPU is soldered to mobo.
>>t420s are avalible with USB 3.0? How that compares to USB 3.0 expresscard adapter?
ExpressCard USB 3.0 is restricted to ExpressCard speeds, which is 1.5 Gb/s. On-board USB 3.0 is 5.0 Gb/s. USB 2.0 is 480 Mb/s.

>less space for hhds and hdd caddy.
Pretty sure the T420s has an optical drive which means it can be swapped for an Ultrabay hard drive caddy.

Alright guys, I'm thinking of buying an IPS screen for my X220, but I have seen some issues with flickering on forums and on youtube. These seemed like faulty screens that were later replaced, but how likely is this to happen to me?
And another thing, the viewing angles seem good, but if I were to hold my laptop sideways and put it in portrait mode for reading manga, will the viewing angles be good for portrait mode too?

And finally the prices, I can't find them cheaper than 60 quid. Is it worth 60 pounds?

Should I maker an offer? If I'm squinting correctly, it's an x300.

I keep thinking about getting a tablet to draw and use in tablet mode while watching shit, but the pen's touch on the edges looks really really bad, and as I already have an X220, paying 200 pounds for the tablet, well I can't find a way to justify it. I'd only get it for tablet mode and drawing, and since my phone, though not as big, is a phablet already, I'd use it mostly for drawing.

Here's the kicker, X220 tablets have IPS to begin with, so I'm really taking my time with this. If I buy an IPS screen for my X220 and then still get a tablet, the screen was kinda a waste of money. I'd love a touchscreen for my finger though I guess.
>>
Is there any decent batteries for the X61t or are they all shit?
>>
>>46850012
>but the pen's touch on the edges looks really really bad

It isn't bad, I don't know why people say this. One corner has problems, the rest of the edges and corners are completely fine.

About to make a webm for it for every time someone says this when they've never used one.
>>
>>46850012
If you end up buying an x220t be aware that not all models have finger touch
>>
>>46850012
>I keep thinking about getting a tablet to draw
i recommend against this, your stylus gets in the way of you viewing what you're drawing
you still have to use the "tablet cursor" regardless of whether it's on a screen or on a different pad, so it's nicer to not have to cock your head at weird angles to see if you're getting it in the right place

These two videos and a few forum posts are what I mean. I also remember seeing a comparison on youtube between X61t and X201t, where the X201t had the same problem. It looks like the edges of the screen have bad accuracy. If they had good accuracy, and the ghosting issue is not actually present in most models, I'd probably lean toward getting and X220t over an IPS for my X220.

If you don't mind me asking a few more things, How is the hinge? On Youtube it looks pretty wobbly, what if I'm lying in bed and moving the laptop about. Will the screen actually move past where it is positioned, or is it just slight wobble. What if I want to touch the screen while in laptop mode, as many laptops advertise nowadays. On youtube it looks like it bends back a bit and wobbles a lot, which would make using laptop mode with occasional screen tapping a bit awkward and annyoing. Does it weight more than the non tablet?

>>46850060
Yes, I think it's something like the outdoor viewing one has no finger touch.
>implying I'll be outdoors

>>46850106
Yes I've heard about that, but the pen looks expensive as fuck. Maybe I'll get it.

>>46850085
I already draw in my drawing books, this would be just for fun.

Screens are 60 quid, X220 tablets are 200 quid. Watdo.

>>46850190
Yes the screen will wobble a little, but it won't move out of place.

I think it weighs the same as the non-tablet, but it is thicker and a little longer. Not recommended as a tablet replacement at all.

I also got the Fujitsu T5000 pen, pressure sensitivity is a lot better and it has an extra button. Also it doesn't fit in the pen silo on the laptop, but I suspect that you may be able to swap the eraser end of the pens so that it would work.
