I want to replace Trackpoint in my thinkpad. Which one will be the best?
does the wacom screen for the x200t work with linux?
Ordered a w520 with 16GB ram, quad core G2 i-7 at 2.2 GHz, and 500GB platter drive for $510 the other day. Good deal?

What's a good thinkpad that I can get for under $300 that has a wacom digitizer and is bretty gud for typing?
>>46721247
x220t, x201t, x200t
>>46721218
Yes it was, seems pretty good to me
Is it worth it to upgrade my t420 to an i7 or will it truly be a 420 and get blazed?

Reposting from the last thread
I'm looking to buy an X220 with a broken screen and upgrade it to an IPS
Overall I could get both for ~210
Wondering though how likely I am to buy a screen and the X220 at the same time and find out that they are incompatible
Also, are the reports of ghosting and white spots blown out of proportion? Seems like all IPS are subject to these problems
I got a thinkpad x60 tablet I just want to resurrect and browse the net with it. My problem is I had a scare last summer and took an axe to the HDD, later to remember it had my O.S. on it(didn't care for content) a factory restore was inevitable anyways.
I see a HDD I want but don't know what all I have to do to get it back running, and it's a netbook so no ultrabase with a cd drive.

How good is the x60 tablet for drawing shit? Would I be better off getting a normal wacom tablet, or maybe a dell or hp?
>>46721370
Not really worth it. $100 for the i7, and you'd get $60 max for your i5.
>>46721555
He's even lazier than that, it's on the fuckin thinkpad wiki.

For the last couple weeks, I've been checking Ebay and other sites for good deals on used Thinkpads, without any success. These are the ones that caught my eye:
- T410, T420, T430
- T510, T520, T530
I don't need the laptop immediately, but I'm getting really impatient. I know this is probably not the best thread to ask this, but are there any alternatives to the Laptops listed above? I'd even consider buying a new one.
I'm looking for something like this:
- budget 300-400€
- screen 15'' =<
- at least 1600x900
- 4 GB RAM, upgradable
- SSD not required, should be installable though
- no OS
- smooth performance, should serve as a desktop replacement (games, photoshop not included)
Any help is appreciated.
>>46721690
Go with the t5xx models if you want a high-res screen. I've been looking for a higher-res, better quality screen for my t410 and there's nothing above this 1440x900 one it came with. Stock max res on the t420 and t430 is 1600x900, but I haven't looked at screen replacements for any of those.
Any of them would work fine as a desktop replacement and have the rest of those specs.
x220 relatively new with no hdd for 260$
how did i do /g/?
>>46721875
250*
X220 would be so fucking perfect for me, if it wasn't for the horrible tiny resolution.
1600x900 minimum, so looks like I am looking at a t420 or something.
Thinkpad T410
i5 Sandy Bridge 2.67 GHz
4 GB RAM
320 GB 7200rpm
Graphics : Intel 5700MHD (good/bad?)
14.1" (1440x900)
210€
What do you think /g/ ?
>>46721962
Go for it. Nvidia GPUs on those are pretty terrible and a bit annoying to deal with. I'm assuming the price is decent for your region?
>>46722115
Yeah it is. Im a bit bothered by that resolution though, but still better than 1366x768 I used for years. Will win 8.1 (or win 10) run good on it though ?
fella with the x60 here, was thinking about updating the wifi card to something that could work with the university wifi, I'm guessing the current one is too old. Was considering getting the Atheros AR5B95, what do you guys think? Have you guys tried using it with xubuntu or other linux?
>>46721690
This is my post.
>>46721836
Okay, so I can cross the T4xx series off the list. In your opinion, what's a good price for, let's say, the T510 or the T520? I've never bought a used laptop before and I'm generally unexperienced when it comes to buying stuff off of ebay.
Also, can I have opinions on this laptop? For example, how does it compare to the ones in my previous post?

>>46721373
Anyone have any experience with this?
>>46722277
Don't worry about the resolution. I'm using one right now and there's plenty of real estate. Windows should run just fine on it.
I'm thinking about getting a X201 as my first ThinkPad. I strongly prefer netbook-like laptops, so its 12" screen fits best with me. Is the X201 a good choice? Or does it have a reputation I don't know about?
>>46723205
To be fair, those are computers schools issue to kids.
>>46723148
x201 is fine, you can get really good price on them.
just bought an X220 any recommendations on what i do once i get it?
going to be using it for light gaming, notes for lectures and programming (c++ and c#)

>>46720005
That's the thing on the bottom? Giant battery?
>>46723823
a diaper.
Should I get libreboot if I want it for privacy? (also programming, but mostly privacy)
Got a W510 last week with the i7 720QM in it for $400 in perfect condition. Not so great on battery life but it's fast as hell. The 1920x1080 screen is nice.
>>46723684
Both are correct.
Hey /g/ I just bought 8 gigs of RAM for my W510. This one to be exact
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231295
Pictured is my current RAM. Would it be advised to use all 4 sticks in order to get 12 gigs? I know the RAM will slow down to the speed of the slowest stick so I'm wondering if it's worth it.
I want to install Coreboot on my x230. What are the reasons not to?
I know I wasn't the only one of you guys bidding on this. Beat you fuckers
>>46724216
I'd just use the faster RAM unless you are going to be maxing it out with virtual machines or some other shit most people don't use. The speed reduction isn't worth it for extra memory that is just going to be sitting there just to make you feel good about having more RAM.
>>46724348
You jerk.
How much am I expected to pay for a T520 with Nvidia graphics? The few listed on eBay are rather overpriced compared to the integrated HD3000 units.
I want a ThinkPad for Uni. This is what my Comp. Eng. major wants:
>Windows/Linux
>Intel i3 or above, or any recent AMD
>integrated graphics are fine
>CD/DVD drive
>4GB RAM
>500GB HDD
Obviously I can upgrade certain components, but does anyone know of a full sized ThinkPad that comes close to this? I'm considering the T520 and upgrading what I need, alternatively an E540.
>>46724816
T410 or newer, T510 or newer, even an x201 or newer with a slim external optical drive would work.
>>46724816
I am curious why you need that much hard drive space though.
>>46724991
The Computer Engineering major for my Uni is basically Computer Science and Engineering crammed into one major, so I'm guessing a lot of work on both sides.
>>46724991
>500gb
>too much
pls.
I got a 1TB HDD and a 128GB SSD on my t410.
Would have bigger storage, but I got both in crazy good deals, which is what limits how big I go.
>>46723218
I'd bet they are school issued computers.
Was anyone else freaking out about how their trackpoint's vertical scroll became unuseable for web browsing literally overnight before realizing that it was just the latest Nightly build that forces one screen at a time scrolling with the trackpoint? I was ready to reinstall Windows to fix this shit when I just tried opening Firefox again.
>>46725172
no because im using aurora.
>>46724372
I'd be using it to game.
>>46725064
It's not that it's a lot, but it just seems like an excessive amount for CS/CE.
>>46725243
8 gigs is plenty for gaymen.
>>46719943
Some years ago, someone in my country was selling one of these (w701ds), it looked like new, and the price was ridiculously high: approximately $1300 USD
What's the best thinkpad I can get for a maximum of 5k? Im going to be using it to game and work from.
>>46725316
>5k
What the fuck
>>46725305
But that was actually a great price for it.
>>46719954
>buying a consumer-tier "thinkpad"
>not buying one at least 5 years old

Sign on bonus from the armed services. I got 5000 dollars for joining.
>>46723823
>>46723823
Correcto. It's called a "slice battery"
>>46725388
If you're spending anywhere close to that much and it's going to be used for playing recent games, I'd go with Sager.
>>46725535
Thanks. I was going to go with the y50 uhd Lenovo but after that spyware shit comming up im never touching one of their products again
Duders, I just bought an X201. Where can I buy a legit 9 cell battery? Amazon and Ebay both seem to just have sketchy knockoffs. Any where trustworthy where I can buy?
>>46725894
This guy looks legit.
