I'm looking to buy an X220 with a broken screen and upgrade it to an IPS
Overall I could get both for ~210
Wondering though how likely I am to buy a screen and the X220 at the same time and find out that they are incompatible

Also, are the reports of ghosting and white spots blown out of proportion? Seems like all IPS are subject to these problems

I got a thinkpad x60 tablet I just want to resurrect and browse the net with it. My problem is I had a scare last summer and took an axe to the HDD, later to remember it had my O.S. on it(didn't care for content) a factory restore was inevitable anyways.

I see a HDD I want but don't know what all I have to do to get it back running, and it's a netbook so no ultrabase with a cd drive.

For the last couple weeks, I've been checking Ebay and other sites for good deals on used Thinkpads, without any success. These are the ones that caught my eye:
- T410, T420, T430
- T510, T520, T530

I don't need the laptop immediately, but I'm getting really impatient. I know this is probably not the best thread to ask this, but are there any alternatives to the Laptops listed above? I'd even consider buying a new one.

I'm looking for something like this:
- budget 300-400€
- screen 15'' =<
- at least 1600x900
- 4 GB RAM, upgradable
- SSD not required, should be installable though
- no OS
- smooth performance, should serve as a desktop replacement (games, photoshop not included)

Any help is appreciated.

Go with the t5xx models if you want a high-res screen. I've been looking for a higher-res, better quality screen for my t410 and there's nothing above this 1440x900 one it came with. Stock max res on the t420 and t430 is 1600x900, but I haven't looked at screen replacements for any of those.

Any of them would work fine as a desktop replacement and have the rest of those specs.

X220 would be so fucking perfect for me, if it wasn't for the horrible tiny resolution.

fella with the x60 here, was thinking about updating the wifi card to something that could work with the university wifi, I'm guessing the current one is too old. Was considering getting the Atheros AR5B95, what do you guys think? Have you guys tried using it with xubuntu or other linux?

I'm thinking about getting a X201 as my first ThinkPad. I strongly prefer netbook-like laptops, so its 12" screen fits best with me. Is the X201 a good choice? Or does it have a reputation I don't know about?

Got a W510 last week with the i7 720QM in it for $400 in perfect condition. Not so great on battery life but it's fast as hell. The 1920x1080 screen is nice.

I'd just use the faster RAM unless you are going to be maxing it out with virtual machines or some other shit most people don't use. The speed reduction isn't worth it for extra memory that is just going to be sitting there just to make you feel good about having more RAM.

How much am I expected to pay for a T520 with Nvidia graphics? The few listed on eBay are rather overpriced compared to the integrated HD3000 units.

I want a ThinkPad for Uni. This is what my Comp. Eng. major wants:

>integrated graphics are fine
>CD/DVD drive
>4GB RAM

Obviously I can upgrade certain components, but does anyone know of a full sized ThinkPad that comes close to this? I'm considering the T520 and upgrading what I need, alternatively an E540.

Was anyone else freaking out about how their trackpoint's vertical scroll became unuseable for web browsing literally overnight before realizing that it was just the latest Nightly build that forces one screen at a time scrolling with the trackpoint?
