That's because your operating system does not incorporate them properly.

A good example of a comfy gesture on OSX, is the four-finger swipe to the side, which changes workspace.

One that I personally use (which I don't see many other people use) is the three-finger drag, for dragging things, which I find immensely more comfortable than the regular way of doing it.

Hell, this trackpad is so good, that I often find myself using it over my mouse, without even noticing it.

I'd rather have an all-glass trackpad (which I do, on my $3000 non-Apple laptop) than six plastic buttons that will look like pic related after a couple of months of use.

I mean I have a keyboard right above the trackpad, I don't need six buttons.

By the way my glass trackpad can be configured to have more than six click types (each corner - 4, middle - 5, two fingers - 6, three fingers - 7) and yet I only use two corners (left and right click) and two fingers (middle click). So unless you really need strong physical feedback and a little "click" isn't enough for you, I see no reason to have a non-glass trackpad.

I first noticed a tiny defect (only way I can describe it) at the bottom of the pad. Over the next few days it started to grow into the little crack on the right. I called and was told to take it into the store. Well before I went, I tried to clean it, and it grew into what you see now. At the store they said there is an impact point so they consider it damaged. I know that I didn't damage it. One day I just noticed that it didn't look smooth anymore. That was the beginning of the end.

>The glass track pad cracked on my 6-month old uni-body Macbook during normal use--specifically while clicking the lower part of the glass with one finger tip.

>Based on what I've experienced and seen so far this is a systematic problem. It looks like there is a weak point in the bottom center of the glass where most of these cracks are happening. Supporting this, the only irregular aspect of my track pad usage was that I clicked almost exclusively at that point in the bottom center. The crack started as a finger tip-shaped downward pointing crescent, and has now spidered all the way to the top of the pad.

>Hey everyone. I just got my MacBook Pro today and the trackpad had a crack in it within 5 hours! However, unlike the ones seen on the other MacBook Pros, this one is in the top left and happened when I clicked around the upper middle area (normal use just like the other situations). I'd like to get this taken care of by AppleCare (they cover one-day old items right??? ) but don't know if it would be possible. For now it may be a cosmetic issue but I don't want the crack to continue expanding and reach epic proportions like the previous poster's. I plan on using this forum as evidence of the trackpad's problems and I hope that since I live in Canada, the stereotype of Canadians being very nice people holds true for the employees at the Apple store .

>I've been looking around the web to find someone with this problem, so it's nice to see something so recent. I've been having a problem with my trackpad for the last few weeks; it just seems to not react to normal pressing and occasionally lags in response, so I end up with about 5-6 actions after a minute or two delay. More often I've been clicking in the bottom middle portion of the trackpad (right where that screw is), as it's the only place that is consistently responsive.

>Late last week I was just tapping away (not agressively or anything) when I looked down and noticed a pretty nasty crack the size of the tip of my finger, with a single looping out. It wasn't there when I started using it earlier that morning, I hadn't moved the laptop, and there was nothing close to drop on it. The cracked area is still responsive, but I really don't want to keep pressing it on the chance it gets worse.

>>45835733
The trackpad is a physical button.

>>45839632
It's not like it's difficult, the other three fingers are already hovering above the trackpad as you use it, you just need to lower them.

>>45839863
Trackpad as a single button is the best way to go. You can reset the trackpad so clicking in different areas/with more or less fingers/etc. does different clicks/things.

I don't have any statistics on whether glass touchpads are any more/less prone to breakage than plastic touchpads, but like I said, I'm not talking about Macs, I'm talking about glass touchpads in general.

If you can show statistics that they're really more faulty/prone to breakage than plastic ones, you win. Otherwise you can sit here all day and find anecdotal evidence showing how much X/Y/Z suck.

My laptop (non-Apple) has a glass touchpad (and glass LCD panel covering). I've dropped it on the corner of a stair (whoops) and banged the top-center of the display on a countertop (double whoops) and they've survived because the aluminum part bent and absorbed the impact.

You CAN engineer things well. And I bet Apple laptops are engineered so that the metal absorbs the impact. You can't generalize from a few broken items.

Faulty components happen and it's a bitch to prove they were faulty out of the factory when you've been using them for six months and they look like physical damage.

Fixed that for you.
Either way, you're really grasping at straws now, anon.

OS X isn't a stripped down *BSD, it's a Darwin OS based OS. Darwin being an OS sharing characteristics and some source code but it itself is not a BSD.

One of the reasons Linux exists is because UNIX had poor features.

Linux isn't UNIX certified because no one at Linux doesn't want to pay the fee. Linux is still UNIX-like.

it's actually bretty good. sure, don't go playin 1.6 on it, but it's fine for single player crap.

Not like stinking Apple users ever used one of these fine pieces of hardware.
(Older ThinkPads, fuck the new design.)

I'm running a Laptop with Windows 8.1, Mavericks and Ubuntu on it.

Everything on a HP Laptop of the higher price range.

You could literally buy that by itself and use it on Windows.
>>
>>45835661
My windows trackpads always had way, way, WAY more accidental click issues. The only accidental click issue I've had with my MBP is doing three finger swipe when I meant 2 finger swipe, and all three finger swipe does is pan out to the multiple window layout. On my windows layouts I often actually clicked on LINKS unintentionally, which would result in forms I was trying to type in getting erased.

i7 in laptops are just ridiculous. Laptops are portable computers, battery life should be the number one priority. Anything CPU intensive should be left to desktops, workstations, and servers.

Do you swipe down on your phone when you want to go further down a webpage?

This is natural. This is exactly how you'd "scroll" a real life paper in front of you. Try it. If you move it up, the text goes up too.

Use a macbook and see how few times you actually accidentally trigger the trackpad

it's weird that it's so big, yet seems to ignore accidental touch

I would pay $200 to not have their shitty trackpad and keyboad. No defined buttons on trackpad. Nowhere to rest your thumb because if you put it on the button, it thinks you're trying to do pinch to zoom.

Note this isn't a Mac only problem. Tons of manufacturers adapt this horrible design.

Apple/GNU/Linux would be fun.
