>>

HOLY FUCK
>>
Hardly fucked. One city having 10 gigabit fiber doesn't make it any less awesome that other cities have 1 gigabit. It's their local cable company that's fucked.
>>
Google isn't running Google Fiber as a serious competitive service. It's just doing it to see what kind of content and services it could provide in a community/environment/world where most/all people have Internet fast enough to make speeds not a practical issue.
>>
meanwhile still no hope of getting a decent fiber connection anywhere else in this state.
>>
>>45767392
and to be clear, by "community/environment/world" I mean whatever scope they're deploying it in. Right now they've only deployed in a handful of cities because each city represents another "n" in the sampling that is their broadband experiment.
>>
>>45767336
>10 gigabit internet
>Implying even comercial grade products support this or will start supporting

My ISP has supported 10 gigabit forever and has a deployed infrastructure.
It's just unlisted and not runing for non comercial use.
So why bother.
>>
>tfw cable still fucking me in the ass for 70/10 mbps for $99 dollarydoos.

why is this allowed?
>>
>>45767484
because conservatives don't like the idea of corporations having to tread internet like a utility.
>>
>>45767515
>conservatives
*conservatards

FTFY :^)
>>
>implying lonely little you can take benefit of a 10 gigabit line, as the only user
>implying any website has 10 gigabit connection to answer yor requests with
>implying your hard disk can read/write with 10 gigabit / sec
>implying that you would ever utilize a 10 gigabit/s connection even if you hosted a shitty little website nobody visits, an IRC server for your perverted friends and a seedbox to help the world get hentai downloaded fast.

you have no reason to be jealous, turn off your computer and go up to the living room and give your family the present of your presense.
>>
>>45767515
It's not a fucking utility and I'm not paying per GB.
>>
>>45767484
I'm an Arab but was born in Sweden.
we don't even have fiber and we're not allowed to get it either because of the suburb.

meanwhile whenever I visit my relatives in Lebanon, they have actual cable internet.

when something like London riots happen here in Sweden, I'm going to enjoy myself.
>>
>>45767580
>not using 10Gbit line to DoS other Cawl of Dooty players

pleb.
>>
>>45767594
being classified as a utility doesn't mean adopting every aspect of utility management that other utilities share. It just means that ISPs don't get to make distinctions about handling certain data in special ways (e.g. charging you a premium for streaming video or coercing Netflix into bribing ISPs so their content comes through at the same speed Youtube and Vimeo does).
>>
>>45767484
>only thing available for my area is Comcast at 20/5 for 70 a month or AT&T at .7/.5 for 50 a month
god bress
>>
>>45767580
that's a shitty mentality. just because you can't utilize 10 gbps now, doesn't mean that will be the case in the future.
>>
>>45767607
I guess it's true that you can't take the desert out of the Arab.
>>
>>45767580
>give your family the present of your presense.
>the present of your presense.
>present
>>
>>45767678
But it's not the future. It's today. And I literally can't think of any service that utilizes an internet connection that could possibly give 10 gbps. Some hop between their server and my home isn't going to support that.

Again, *what are you going to do with it*? I'm not going to buy a fucking lightbulb if the wiring running to my house isn't hooked up to a power plant.

>>45768159
Bluray is just 1080p, you can already do that without 10 gbps. And more importantly, if you are going to stream whatever resolution would saturate that bandwidth, where are you streaming it *from*?
>>
>>45767383
...and they're fucking over Comcast.
Can't wait until more ISPs do this.

here's a better one for you

>tow 5 tons every day with your company truck
>company announces they're upgrading their truck fleet
>now you can tow those 5 tons even more efficiently!
>>
>>45768524
You seriously think companies are retarded enough to let you run unthrottled connections to their services? A single hping3 command and the whole site would go down if that were true.

>>45768555
No. My analogy wasn't perfect, but it's better than yours. I have ~50 mbps from comcast tunneled over a VPN right now, and can torrent, stream, and play vidya without saturating either's bandwidth. If you think that you'll see a significant difference between 1 and 10 gbps, you're fucking retarded.
>>
>>45768793
>You seriously think companies are retarded enough to let you run unthrottled connections to their services? A single hping3 command and the whole site would go down if that were true.
Hey genius, if you spoof UDP sources you can do that if your connection is fast enough. You're a fucking retard. What the fuck are they going to do about it?

>>
>>45768162
>>45768079

Actually, you're both retarded. A byte is not defined as 8 bits specifically. This comes down to an architecture's byte size, and even the choice of the OS. It is de facto standard that a byte is 8 bits, but it this is not actually standardised with a specification. This is why they're sold as bits per second as opposed to bytes per second, because the latter would be incorrect for many systems.
>>
>>45767613
>implying you even have a 10 gigabit nic
>>
>>45767484
Because our ISP's in the States are corrupt as fuck.
>>
>>45768162
I count storage in bytes, so why shouldn't I count speed in bytes per second? We don't use different distance units when we compare distance and fuel efficiency (e.g. we use "miles" and "miles per gallon", not "miles" and "kilometers per liter")
>>

This is all exactly according to keikaku from Google's point of view.

Google Fiber was never supposed to be the best possible internet service. They half-assed it from the word "go." The whole point of it was to make established ISPs look like lazy assholes. Like, Google can do this amazing shit without even trying, and Comcast is still gouging people for upload speeds that only look good when compared with dialup.

Google doesn't give a fuck who you buy your bandwidth from, so long as you have enough of it for them to be able to exploit it in their web apps.
>>
>>45771499
Just plug a 10Gb nic into a PC or Linux box.

I have 10Gb internet at work, it's pointless. Maximum download you get even off a fast site is only a few hundred Mbit. Never even come close to maxing out 1Gb let alone 10Gb.
>>
>>45767336

so what? the whole point of Google Fiber was to force the ISPs to innovate their regional monopolies to faster connections to get people to consume more content, thats why Google only went in to extremely vulnerable markets
>>
>>45771566
Really?
The only one that sounds like it even might be just stupid is the one you quoted with the humming birds. And maybe the one where the shots rang out

The real story here is that they are offering symmetrical 1Gbps for $65. Symmetrical 100Mbps for $48. I would be all over that. Like a god damned hobo on a ham sandwich.

I currently have DSL with "up to" 5Mbps down and "up to" 1Mpbs up. I get 4 down and 600K up. And it fluctuates. I pay $90 per month.

The worst part is I live 25 to 35 miles from Minneapolis/Saint Paul.
