Thanks for your help.
so im trying to fix whatever the hell is wrong with my computer via Command Prompt.
Just found some instructions on forum no.666
How do I enter this shit exactly?
copy *.* r:
Is it C: (enter) cd sources (enter) copy *.* r: (enter)? Or the entire line at once then Enter?
>>Is it C: (enter) cd sources (enter) copy *.* r: (enter)?
That's basically going to your C: drive, then the folder sources, then copying everything (whatever name and whatever extension) over to R:
I'm trying to "upgrade" my gf's ancient machine
She has Pentium Prescott, 1(maybe 2, i forgot) gb ddr2, NO gpu and mobo socket 775
Now, thing is, i have very little money so i'm thinking buying some core2duo, maybe q6600 if i find a good one, but i am not sure what gpu to buy. Mobo has appropriate pci slot but will run at 4x speed. That doesn't play a huge role considering gf won't play any games, it only needs to be able to play hd movies and surf the web. Any suggestions for <20-30$ ??
tl;dr, what used cpu and gpu would you buy for socket 775 and under 40$
A wildcard character is a keyboard character such as an asterisk (*) or a question mark (?) that is used to represent one or more characters when you are searching for files, folders, printers, computers, or people. Wildcard characters are often used in place of one or more characters when you do not know what the real character is or you do not want to type the entire name.
So if you use * before AND after the . (for extension), you are basically calling every file with an extension within that folder, since you are using the wildcard.
Hope that's clear
so you're saying that I wildcard the drive letter for my recovery usb and it\'ll just pull everything from it?
I hope you mean that because things would make sense for once if that's the case
Wait longer than 8 minutes, you ass. The thread isn't even moving that quickly.
Depending how what your budget is, I'd say it's not worth upgrading. Very little of that PC is reusable. You'll need to check what motherboard you have and whether it'll support a new CPU. Any integrated graphics is already more than enough for any video watching you'll do.
I plan on getting a note 4 but I don't know what to expect of apps from different carriers that are preinstalled. What is the difference in apps between carriers? Will greenify without root be effective in limiting the potential crap that might run in the background? With love, Galaxy Nexus user.
I have an external HDD that I do daily backups to. Copying files from the desktop to it. Is this a smart thing to do? Should I just do monthly or weekly backups and leave it alone? Should I just buy another HDD for storage?
If you have files you actually care about, burn to DVD at slowest possible speed then test. Spinners aren't backups unless you use several and use versioning so loss of one doesn't matter.
Study backup strategies and develop one that suits your needs.
I know I'm going to get shit for being a Mac user, but I have OCPD and literally cannot stand this minuscule fucking gap between my applications and the bottom of my screen, it pisses me off far more than anything should, is there anything I can do to fix this? The browser is stretched to its furthest lengths and there's still this gap.
bumping for you
getting a mac soon and I'd like to know this too
Pic related - should I had paid 100 more to get the surface 3 or is it really shit compared to surface pro 2? I heard things like the new pen isn't even wacom anymore.
No. Fans only use a tiny amount of power. If the PSU was too weak the system would be getting errors, performing not as well, shutting down before the fan ever got too weak to cool off the CPU.
How do I get rid of this stupid keyboard icon in my language bar? It popped up today and I can't seem to turn it off.
I have an ipod touch that i'm trying to repurpose as a storgae device but ot partition it i need it to be recognized by my computer as a device with removable storage (it is currently a portable device). so my question is how to get my ipod to register as a device with removable storage in windows seven home edition
Is 500W enough for this build?
Anything you hardware gurus would change? (I'm on a budget here)
These any good? Look neato besides the reddit tier shit and sticker. Stiching looks cool and fact u can wash ti
Ahh, so I might as well assume if its picked up and detected, its fine and if not its fucked?
I used crystaldiskinfo and one of my drives turn up caution, sure wish it wasn't so vague
I have an Alienware 14 laptop with an HDMI port, and an LG 32LK330 HDTV. Exactly what adapters or converter cables do I need to get to allow my laptop to display Wii-U games rather than the television?
Pic related, my aptitude when it comes to any of this.
Would the computer in this link be able to run Skyrim efficiently?
Got myself a watercooler for Christmas, went to pull off my heatsink, fucking CPU came with it.
This thing feels like it's fucking welded, I drowned it in rubbing alcohol but nothing. How the fuck can I get this thing off?
Have you tried applying heat to loosen it? Hell, maybe you could submerge the thing in hot water since you're not applying any voltage to the thing.
I wouldn't try to wedge a screwdriver or something in there, for risk of creating scratches and dents that could screw up the contact between the CPU and the cooler.
I think acetone would also be okay if you're not getting anywhere with IPA.
Why is it always Dwight as the stupid questions mascot? He's one of the best salesmen at Scranton.
It should be Andy (see pic).

How can I stick to the quality of this build but cut corners for cost? Are their cheaper alternatives to the listed parts? I don't need a riced out case if there's a grey box that can do the dame thing.
A good case is pretty important, especially with sli/crossfire cards. A good case means good airflow and spacing between the components, a bad case means 90 degree temperature on idle.
My laptop's hard drive shit the bed so I got another one, same line. I got another copy of Windows 7 because I'd already used my license code on another computer.
I installed Windows and a bunch of devices won't work. The drivers won't load apparently. The ethernet controller, network controller, PCI device, SM bus controller, two of "USB controller" and two of "unknown device".
My USB controllers show up normally down in their section of device manager, but it can't even detect anything I plug in. Uninstalling the driver entries that aren't working (which all show up under "other devices") and scanning hardware just reinstalls them...but broken and with unknown, not available, etc, in all relevant fields under properties.
How do I force it to unfuck?
QUESTION: When physical damage is done to a HDD does it corrupt files or delete them?
I would think the floating head would hit the disk and scratch it or create a bad sector. If files were corrupted I can tell by using rsync on Linux or some other software; if they were delete I will never know.
I just dropped my 1tb HDD (see attachment):
It really fucking pissed me off because I always try to be super careful when handling it and I have a lot of good content on it.
I have a Sapphire Radeon 7850, and my monitor keeps flickering off/on (black screen for 2 seconds then goes back to normal) every so often, idling at 37C. Is it more likely to be a monitor (VS238H-P) or GPU problem?
having had no problems with my shit up until now, Win7 is suddenly saying it isn't genuine. did they release an update or something that I missed? is there a newer version of daz loader?
If you enable the option to view hidden folders there should be a folder named ipod_control or some shit like that. And then there's a music folder in there and you would just drag and drop the contents onto your hard drive. The file names will be messed up but it'll still be indexed properly in music players and such.
Getting a laptop with win 7 pro, comes with a liscence for win 8.1 pro. No touchscreen. Should I download it or not? If I keep win 7 can I use the liscence to upgrade another computer to 8?
There is none at the price point of a Nexus 5. You're better off using some third party cloud storage option, but even that is far from an SD card.
I'd look into a GPE S4 though. Thing's beautiful.
Is there a way I can backup my data on Anrdoid BEFORE rooting and flashing a custom recovery?
My display is fucked up after using HDMI.
Deleting the .kde folder fixes shit.
What must I delete inside the .kde folder to fix shit and not having to destroy everything?
>tfw there is no file which has "randr" in its name
Whatever I do I can add launchers onto tint2 in Crunchbang.
My tint2rc launchers section:# Launcher
launcher_padding = 8 4 4
launcher_background_id = 0
launcher_icon_size = 24
# Specify icon theme names with launcher_icon_theme.
# if you have an XSETTINGS manager running (like xfsettingsd), tint2 will follow your current theme.
launcher_icon_theme = gnome-colors-statler
# Each launcher_item_app must be a full path to a .desktop file
launcher_item_app = /usr/share/applications/terminator.desktop
launcher_item_app = /usr/share/applications/Geany.desktop
launcher_item_app = /usr/share/applications/iceweasel.desktop
and the Panels section# Panel
panel_monitor = all
panel_position = top center horizontal
panel_items = LTSC
panel_size = 100% 30
panel_margin = 0 -1
panel_padding = 0 0
panel_dock = 0
wm_menu = 1
panel_layer = bottom
panel_background_id = 1
Every time I reload tint2 it just gives me launchers for iceweasel and terminator. Geany does not show. Anyone know what's wrong?
Please tell me some good apps or shit to do when I'm bored using my phone
My autism tells me to do a factory reset when I am bored, and I often do that. ( 2 times a week )
My internet connection is really fucking awful, it's tolerable at its best but I get really bad lag spikes every so often. I have the only PC hooked up to the router with ethernet, everyone else is using wireless.
My question: is there a way I could redirect all network traffic through the wireless card on my PC so that I could monitor who's killing the bandwidth? The router is some obscure shit with no support for custom firmware, so I can't use that.
>use HDMI on laptop to watch movie
>mouse can move outside to the right
>ignore and shut down
>later boot up
>no desktop, popup saying I've connected to router
>have to use terminal to start programs and shit now
What the fuck just happened? Fedora KDE btw.
The problem I'm having is literally unfixable. xrandr, x, whatever... useless.
When I rename the .kde folder shit works again, so there's some config which is fucking everything up. I have no idea where it is though, and I'm not starting from scratch on all my customizations.
Have you tried installing a different DE and seeing if the problem also happens with that DE, and have you tried installing (or just running off a livecd/usb) another distro with KDE to compare?
No, but I already know something like Gnome would likely work fine. As I said, renaming .kde fixes shit (if you consider resetting everything in KDE to default).
The only sin I committed was using HDMI on a laptop running Linux.
Is there a place I can re-sell those shitty NVIDIA free-game coupons that come with GPU's?
I'm planning on getting a GTX 970 from Newegg but the only promo they have running currently is for Asscreed Unity/Far Cry 4/The Crew, none of which I care about and isn't redeemable on Steam, which means I give zero fucks, but I'm too cheap to just throw it out, I was hoping there was a place I'd be able to pawn it off for $30-50 on someone who wants to get any of those at a discount.
If I removenetworkmanager-openconnect networkmanager-openvpn networkmanager-pptp networkmanager-vpnc
will I break NetworkManager / my access to the internet? What's the worst that could happen?
Does it blow up into millions of pieces after 2 days of light usage? Are the colors washed out after blazing it all night? Is it impossible to clean due to the dead witch's curse?
I'm short one connector with my PSU for everything to work. It's all running great except the front fans in my case aren't powered, and I'm missing a molex connector to power it.
The 8-pin connector I have in my 970 has two molex adapters running into it, if I take one of them out to power the rest of my case will that cause a noticable decrease in the power going to my card and the performance I get out of it?
Why can't I enable wifi with my keyboard shortcut (Fn+F1)? I can only turn it on / off via the GUI nm-applet and the CLIs - nmtui, nmcli, etc. don't work I just can't activate the WiFi option, it wont let me even select it.
>Fn + F1
Keyboard commands that involve the Fn key are resolved inside the keyboard's firmware. The OS does not know what the Fn key is.
Your best bet is finding some keyboard drivers for your laptop.
My GTX770 has one VGA port and one HDMI port.
I have 2 monitors using them both.
How can I use a 3rd or 4th? Like how do I even plug them in? I assume some kind of splitter, but everything I find about them just says they duplicate the exact same image to the other display, not extend the monitor.
I googled. Everything I found was about whether the card is good enough to play games on multiple monitors, not how to actually use them.
I bought a Thinkpad x200T two years ago thinking it would be fine for word processing, internet surfing, etc. It's been fine for that but as of recently it's begun to lag severely when doing basic tasks like torrenting.
Should I upgrade to a better laptop, or would installing some flavor of linux help (I'm on win8.1)
Will the Moto G be noticeably faster and better with multitasking than my current iPhone 4S?
The Moto G has twice as much RAM (1GB vs 512MB) and a better CPU (1.2ghz quad core cortex A7 vs the 800mhz dual core cortex A9 in the iPhone 4S) but at the same time, iOS is obviously more optimized for the hardware than Android so I'm wondering if the performance increase might not be that much
So will it be a big step up in performance or not much at all?
Also, does anyone know if the amp/dac in the Moto G is good enough to power some dual balanced armature IEM's with an impedance of 36ohm?
I have a job coding for a small company, our clients are massive fortune 500 companies, and our projects are huge but written by a very small team. We're on call all the time(ie my boss might be in China tomorrow and hit me up at 10pm asking for updates about some work) so sometimes I have to pull all nighters to get some updates done before an 8am show time.
I like the experience and I'm becoming a much better programmer(im only 20) and the pay is really good, but I fucking hate coding projects that aren't MINE, because I find that I don't give a fuck about them, so the motivation to do the coding is low.
Should I quit my job and try to do my own thing, /g/? What are my chances of succeeding commercially with my own projects?
so i just bought a surface pro 3 and i installed mingw and all, and when i installed haskell, it installed another copy of mingw inside the haskell platform directory.
i've tried removing it but ghc needs it to be RIGHT THERE for some reason
is there a minimal haskell install for windows that just comes with basic stuff like ghc and cabal?
is everything in windows going to be like this?
new build doesn't post and displays a '99' in bottom right corner
is it dead? I think it's dead
I dropped my external WD MyPassport HDD and now it is click-of-death broken. If I connect it, it shows up and I can mount it but reading takes ages due the read-write arm being utterly fucked.
What are the changes of me getting a new one through warranty if I return it? There is no visible damage to the enclosure of the HDD. By European law they have to be able to prove it broke through my fault. Are there any normal-use actions that can cause the read-write arm to fuck up? Do they build in any way to see if the drive was dropped?
Either way, I might as well try, nothing to loose after all.
Can't speak for the hardware the Moto G, but Android has a better user experience for multitasking overall. You can more rapidly switch between apps and pressing back actually brings up the
You can't find any because it is impossible on HDMI and VGA (and DVI). http://superuser.com/questions/805983/can-i-connect-two-monitors-to-my-computer-using-an-hdmi-splitter
If you want to use more than two monitors without duplicated display a splitter won't do and you a GPU with more outputs.

Do it. You'll have NO MONEY for a few months but if you have a good idea, run with it.
Otherwise just stay in your cubicle where it's safe.
It's easier to read, especially if you're dealing with 300+ source code files and I can switch between Files / Content quickly to see where it's hiding and I can right click and open it with my favorite text editor.
Compiled source code has shit like *.o, *.d and other shit I don't want grep gui to search.
Searchmonkey can't filter unwanted files / directory.
If I want to search movies or musics in my HD, grep should suffice but for repeated source code search it isn't enough.
With ccd0's 4chan X every time the header closes (or sometimes up to 10 seconds later) the entire site crashes. It doenst happen in Firefox only in chromium. I've already disabled all other extensions and scripts and tried the beta. Wat do? Xubuntu btw
Me and my brother are planning on getting our good family friend a Surface Pro for his birthday. We know we're going to get him a Surface Pro. The question is should we get him a 3 or wait for the 4.
Thanks and Merrrrrrry Christmas!!!!
Even though I use gnu/linux, can write shell scripts and small programs, my whole life I have avoided learning about networks (i.e. how does my LAN work) for real. Whenever there was a problem, I simply googled for the solution until I found something that worked.
So how would I go about learning about how networks work in a time frame that is appropriate? Is there some ebook or other resource /g/ could recommend?
This thread is great btw.
I need a smartphone with a long battery life and can accommodate ~125GB storage for my music library. Good speakers would be awesome.
I'd use the camera occasionally but I don't take photos much, so I won't mind a subpar camera. I don't play any mobile games, but it'd be cool to be able to play emulators.
Uh, I don't like lag I guess.
What phone should I get /g/?
Hey /g/! I'm a beginner programmer in Python and I was wondering if I should make the jump to Java. I heard it's more widely used, not to mention that I need knowledge of Java for a certain degree.
Trying to install this synth program on other PC, when i try to 'make' (after ./config) i get this:
help me out, linux noob
im having some issues with openvpn client on fedora. ive never had a problem doing the same thing im doing now, before
>openvpn --config config.ovpn
this sets up tun0 and then i tell my torrent client to bind to that interface and itll direct all torrent traffic over the vpn
now it's not working and i don't know why
the tunnel is set up and it shows up in ip addr show. and when i traceroute things get weird
it shows it going through the vpn tunnel, and google thinks i my ip is the vpn server's ip
it's not going through the vpn tunnel and HE sees my home ip
i went to various ip checker websites and some see my home ip and some see the vpn ip
is linux doing some magic load balancing and picking a nic based on latency or something?
still doesn't explain why my torrents arent going thru the tun0 interface even though im explicitly telling it to bind to it
4chan sees the vpn's ip, so i had to use my laptop to post this because i dont feel like restart desktop (which has openvpn running atm) i don't know how to kill the openvpn tunnels without restarting.
help me out /g/ i know there is someone out there that knows exactly what i need to do
What should I do if I always get stuck on the starting Windows screen when installing Win7?
I tried downloading an iso and burning it onto a CD but the BCD file on that was corrupted.
Should I just leave this pleb OS behind and install gentoo?
Are my idle temps normal, or is something broken?
30 degrees seems too low, especially for Australian Summer
There must be something wrong with your network configuration, anyway when I use a VPN I usually block all the traffic from and to the "standard" net interface (eth0 in my case), except for the port/IP used by openvpn to communicate with the VPN server. This way applications will be forced to use the tun device and there won't be any risk of data leak.
You can do that with shorewall with is a frontend for iptables.
>i don't know how to kill the openvpn tunnels without restarting.
Stopping the VPN client should be enough if everything is configured correctly
how do I change this horrible font ?
looking for a nice set of headphones, preferably with a mic
my old one was a logitech headset g930, got it second hand from a friend and it was great but i'm curious what else is out there
don't really want to go more than 100 bucks
On linux, how would one find out what a key on their keyboard is called? I am trying to figure out emacs, but alt is in an awkward position on my keyboard and so I wanted to change the 'fn' key to meta for ease of access but I am not sure what it would be called (function, function-key, fn, fn-SUPER, whatever the fuck else).
Also googling tells me I would need to use this
(setq x-alt-keysym symbol)
to tell emacs to change the key. I understand to change symbol to whatever fn is, but where do I put this? In a config, in the built in terminal (I don't know how to get to this yet), where?
How the fuck do I install Win 95 to an IDE HDD connected to my T420 from the CD, and then put it back into my 755 and it just werks? I finally found a HDD that my 755 likes and now this shit. I keep getting 176 Error code of the easy setup bios.
I wanna get a 780
>inb4 get a 970, i don't have the $$$
Would pic related be suitable?
I'm looking at this one and not the hall of fame one because i'm 90% sure that the hall of fame one won't fit in my case. I only have 3 case fans so would cooling be an issue for this card?
Should I update CPU drivers?
It says I have a 6.1 driver from 2006 in Device Manager but Intel Update Utility says the latest version is 10.0.
I tried updating but Device Manager still says I have the old driver. Attempting to update via Device Manager says it's already up to date.
Does this matter and would it be possible to have two CPU drivers installed at the same time, and if it does would that create a conflict?
What's a good photo album app for android? The pre stocked ones are fucking shit and I preferably want something to help me organise pictures because at current I can't show people shit on my phone because 90% of what I save is nsfw awaiting transfer to my pc.
Device is rooted and riced if that helps you help me.
Pic related is my PC. It runns windows XP SP3. I want to use the front panel SD card reader but when I insert a card a green LED comes on and nothing else happens. The card is not acessible via windows explorer.
The USB-Port on the same panel works just fine and I've tried swaping the internal USB header.
Device manager says it's fine and I can't find any drivers for it online.
You guys are my last hope before I go buy a SD to USB adapter.
Yeah I was hoping there was a way to save me the conversion step, like WebMCam for Windows.
You likely need to remove the heatsink, dust it, as well as the fan(s), and replace the thermal compound with AS5
Check your start-up entries using MsConfig and make sure some random program isn't enabled. It may be an infection even.
Visit the manufacturers website on another computer and enter your model number to acquire the drivers, or install Linux Mint.
They wouldn't be deleted, they may be corrupted if the damage was minimal. If the disk gets too damaged the PC generally won't boot up to the OS.
Use daz loader to uninstall your activation, and then reboot. Afterward, reinstall the activation using the loader. Generally happens if you leave windows update on automatically install. The monthly malware removal tool ect.
Wouldn't recommend it.
Bandwidth being sluggish could be due to the quality of the ethernet wire, as well as the length. Shorter the wire, generally the faster your internet. Also, cat7 ftw
Disable all enhancements that may be enabled under speaker properties.
Command will fuck your Mac into oblivion
Buy bluetooth mouse and keyboard, enjoy portable touch laptop.
Do you need to apply thermal past if you use the old cooler? It has some on it!
Remove the thermal paste from both the heatsink as well as the CPU, using cotton swabs, rubbing alcohol, and paper towels. Careful when handling the CPU. Don't bend the pins or get thermal paste where it isn't supposed to be.
I just got a new 4tb harddrive for christmas and its not showing up in windows, it shows up in my bios but not in disk management at all, tried restarting and changing different sata cables. Any ideas?
Any tablet owners here?
I have a dashcam in my car, and in the event of an accident, I'd like to be able to look at the videos on a larger screen, and to make copies of the video file that shows the accident.
My dashcam acts like a USB mass storage device when i connect it to my computer, so if I connect it to a decent tablet with an SD card, will it be a simple file copy from the cam to the SD card?
Thanks for answering this rather stupid question!
Not sure if >>45775323 is the same person as >>45775280, but >>45775307 is not fucking with you. You need to remove that shit and apply new thermal paste. Rubbing alcohol is legit, but you may be able to get everything off with just cotton swabs or toilet paper unless it's really stuck on there. Look up a video about replacing a heatsink or applying new thermal paste on youtube and you'll be fine.
I'm trying stuff with git.git rebase -i --root
This opens Vim and I'm able to do ':p' and it says it has picked a commit, yet nothing seems to have been changed.
Also ':r' doesn't work, it duplicates all the code.
What am I doing wrong?
I got a prebuilt HPE-195a roughly 4 years ago and I desperately need to upgrade my graphics card. I dont have a lot of money so I cant build my own just yet so I am just going to get a Gigabyte Radeon R7 250 OC 2GB. My only concern is that the PSU wont be able to handle the extra load. I checked http://www.extreme.outervision.com/PSUEngine
and it seemed to indicate I had plenty but im not sure how accurate it is. Will my current PSU suffice?
>Gigabyte Radeon R7 250 OC 2GB
>Intel Core i7 860
Will it work?
the following probably applies to your dashcam:
To copy or move files from an USB drive, or micro-SD card, to the internal memory of the tablet and vice-versa, a so-called file manager is needed. As Android does not include it, you can use free file managers such as Astro File Manager, OI File Manager or Linda File Manager, available on the Android Market. Installing such an application will allow you to check the content of the storage devices directly.
Trying to find out why this is happening.
While playing games, my screen blacks out every now and then. This sometimes causes both my game and Firefox to completely lockup forcing me to kill the processes. Sometimes I can keep playing the game but I think it depends on what game I play. It literally loses connection to my display and reconnects it a few seconds later. There are no driver crashes as far as I know. I see nothing in the event viewer. GPU temp isn't getting high at all.
Assuming I'm willing to drop the cash for it, are Solid State Drives now reliable enough to be the only storage in any particular system?
I don't use much space so I was thinking of going with a 500gb samsung 850 or 840 evo for both boot and storage.
Make sure the case is shaped correctly. OEM cases tend to be nonstandard which can cause problems such as the PSU not fitting. Also, 450W might be cutting it short. Also, never buy factory OC'd cards.
5 million years later I have found the exact configuration file in ~/.kde/share/config called plasma-desktop-appletrc.
When I delete that file, everything returns to normal, with most of my configuration back to default.
What setting could be the culprit? There are like a thousand entries in there!
New PC Build, having an issue
With almost everything but my graphics card plugged in, I went to go test and see if it would boot up. The LED's and fans are spinning, but my monitor doesn't display anything. It just flips between HDMI and AV and then turns itself off. Help?
