how are you finding gnome?
>>

Since still using it. Finding it pretty well. Runs better than I remember. Haven't had any issues. It's no rice fest. But looks nice and has good extensions. was just eating like 320 ram. so that part isn't so bad either.

simple and minimalistic are not the same thing. arch adds in some useful abstractions that allow users to construct the operating systems they want without worrying either about low-level configuration or high-level choices already being made.

i gladly accept arches "bloat" (which is on a scale that really doesn't matter on modern computers any more) for things like sane package names with unified headers and libs, an easy to use package manager which takes away any temptation to throw files around manually, and merging system directories so files of similar types are all in one place.

Ran Arch Arm + i3 for a short while but it's honestly
simply too under powered. All the lag doesn't make
for a joyful experience. If the RPi was two times
more powerful it would be a fun desktop replacement..
at least for media consumption and general internet browsing purposes.

No worries anon, others in the thread did say exactly what I said though.

Try not to be too dependent on being spoonfed configs for your rice. You will learn a lot more by understanding what is going on. You can always join #rice @ Rizon and ask for help there, they are usually a friendly bunch.

A person’s legacy and character are defined by everything we do, no matter how small: our hobbies, our interactions with other people, our mistakes, and our choices in the wake of our mistakes. I’ve complained throughout my life about a lack of people willing to be ‘role models’; hypocritically, I have not been acting like one myself. I don’t want people’s final impressions of me to be “a person who cheats at games”. Although it’s small recompense, I’d much rather be remembered – if at all – as a person who owned up to their errors and tried to make things right.

Hey guys
>>
Seems like this is the perfect one to ask.

I'm a linux noob and I try to into it with babbys first, aka Ubuntu.
Unity was not bad, but also not that good, so I changed to Xubuntu, because some anon recommended XFCE, I haven't got myself to rice it, but I did notice that it fucked Yakuake for me, and since that is from KDE I was thinking on changing to Kubuntu.

tl;dr: what *buntu version/DE would be better for a linux noob?

not actually hard to install if you can read instructions, basically a DIY operating system but not to the extreme of gentoo, good if you like the idea of only having what you want on your pc
>>
>>45640588
Some insight in this?
I'm waiting for it to install Kubuntu, but if there is something better/easier for a noob I'm here to hear from you guys, since you are the experts
>>
>>45641020
it might've gotten better since i last used it but in my experience kde is bloated beyond belief and also an eyesore
my advice is just drop DEs in general and use openbox.
>>
>>45641065
Well, just rebooted into it and it doesn't look that bad.
Also, isn't openbox a little more advance?
I'm tackling this one step at a time

Just look through some and see what you like. You may think the ones that I like are too gay, so you really should just pick something for yourself.

But I like Numix, Flattr, or the combination of the two, Circle-Flat.
>>
>>45641181
openbox might be a little harder to get working in the first place but there are a decent number of distros out there that come with it preinstalled
using it isn't a problem at all, it's very user-friendly
if you want to modify it you'll have to get into editing config files manually but that's not hard either and a really good skill to have if you don't already

Anybody have any reccomendations for GTK3.14 compatible themes?

Preferably something with color, none of the Grey on Grey with colored highlights, or Dark as my Soul colors which is all i seem to find

I would use Zoncolor if it worked with GTK3.14

Lxterminal I think? There was something you could do in the config file for it, pretty easy to replicate I think for any term

>remove window decorations
>transparency
>set foreground color
>add it to startup (xinitrc)
>find some way to set it to open in a specific location

It was pretty cool when I was using it.
Gave the laptop to my sister a while ago for art and things because I wasn't using the tablet features of it.
