This.

You can type down 1000 reasons to own a tablet, but it wont change the fact that if you EVER see one in use its
>browsing the net
>playing mobile games
>>
>>45447733
the ipad was just that. but now, tablets are becoming more powerful than many comsumer laptops
>>

>>
>>45447939
That's all most people do with their computers and tablets are much cheaper, take up significantly less space, are mobile. You computer guys sure aren't that good at applying that logic you love to talk about to real life situations.
>>
>>45447993

We know thats what the casuals use it for, but who the fuck are these people going on the net and defending tablets against people who obviously care to atleast have the freedom to do more on their devices?

If I were to go on facebook and say to some tard that their ipad is only good for facebook/9gag and shit gaming, they would go into a several page long rant on just HOW TERRIBLY WRONG I AM.

Nobody would say "yeah and thats the only things I use it for", even though its true.
>>
>>45447773
I take meeting notes from it and use it to draw/map out ideas that I have.

I also use it very often for email while I'm between meetings and in coffee shops as it's much more convenient than using my phone or whipping out a laptop.

Also, believe it or not. I find myself creating and editing documents with it these days as well.

>proper office suites are now a thing on tablets

>>
>>45447733
it does have some strong points:

>quicker to use than a laptop
but yeah, all in all: it's a luxury item.
>>
>>45448069
So are smartphones, but the difference is that they do more than iOS and Androne tablets
>>
>>45448069

The point at which it becomes an extreme luxury item is when you have a good smartphone anyway.

A laptop+smartphone leaves no spot for a tablet, they cover all fronts unless, somehow, someway, screen estate is what you need in the casual tasks you do...
>>
>>45448099
Isn't the reason why tablets don't replace laptops because they use a phone OS? Nemo is basically full linux
>>

no, tablets don't replace laptops because using a tablet is something that housewives or bored out teenagers do. real work gets done on a real machine with a real keyboard.

>>
>>45448149
yes because hauling around two seperate pieces of hardware, that have a clumsy mechanism to work together, is super convenient
3/10 did kek a little
>>
>>45447630
I already have.

Sure, it's niche and the native applications are fucking crap as far as I remember. But I have faith in Jolla and Sailfish OS. It needs to start somewhere and their OS is actually really good. I've tried it on my old Nexus 4 and unfortunately the app selection, the quality of the native apps and the app store in general sure as fuck isn't anything to write home about, but the multitasking was top notch, I loved the look of it, and the gesture based stuff was actually quite innovative.

So I'll see how this one turns out. Since the N4 couldn't have Alien Dalvik installed, maybe this is even far better than the N4 port by far. If it sucks balls I'll simply forget about it. It's not like I don't have the money to buy another one.
>>
>>45448175
Even better than alien dalvik you could simply run wine since this is x86
>>
>>45448128

Fact is, tablets ARE replacing laptops for those who really dont have any additional uses than basic internet needs.

Anyone else will not want one due to
>lack of feedback from controls
>lack of power from hardware
>lack of battery time due to size
>lack of compatibility due to missing connections
>lack of screen size/estate due to small form factor

If I wanted to just read off an excel sheet in 2 minutes, that might work for a tablet, if I wanted to write an excel sheet that takes 4 hours to do - I'd rather kill myself than do it on a 10" screen, with pathetic keyboards with no ergonomics.

A stylus can help with the controls - but is a bother in and by itself, as it is immedietly less comfy to use a tablet quickly if I have to hold something in my other hand too.
>>
>>45448174
The Thinkpad Helix comes pretty close to my perfect tablet PC. I would just like it to be a tad bigger, like 12,5" and have a 3:2 display. The keyboard is great and they could add another one that is a bit thicker but has 2 USB, a VGA, a HDMI and an Ethernet port. Also an extended battery. Windows 8 is a step in the right direction. Having a special UI and programs optimized for tablet use and a "normal" Windows underneath it to use it as a laptop.

this

I bought a couple of the microcenter cheapo tablets($60 for 7", $100 for 8") and was very excited by it. They were both bay trail quad core atoms, and were very responsive. Both had full USB port(8" has usb3) and I was able to easily get several different linux distros installed and tested before I ultimately returned them(the tablet itself had hardware issues).

x86 might make tablets useful IMO, but we need more/better touch support across distros.

Those chips are much more power hungry than equivalent ARM chips and the only reason they're cheap is because Intel is selling them at a loss in an attempt to gain more marketshare in mobile. Let's not forget that most mobile applications are written with ARM in mind from the get-go.

>libc, Wayland

It was already abundantly clear that you were talking out of your ass, you don't need to keep driving the point home.
intel's current Atom chips are not even in the same category in terms of power consumption with ARM chips. Their idle and load power consumption is drastically higher.
>>
>>45448754
Yeah man, these aren't netbook atoms from 5 years ago, they are really nice chips. They do OoO execution, some have turbo boost or quickassist or AESNI, are 64bit, come in dual, quad, and octa configurations and use very little power relative to their processing ability. What do you think intel has been working on the last few years? Certainly not improving performance on the desktop chips; they've been getting dat low TDP.

>>45448804
What are you saying? C2758 is not a mobile chip. This is on a supermicro mini-itx board in a 1U rackmount. ~20W TDP is pretty fucking good for what this device does. A lot of people build their firewalls with iX or Xeons, and they easily use more than 20W.

Going on about "muh coars" and "muh gigahurtz" is hardly a good measure of performance. You'd have thought /g/ would have gotten wise after AMD went that road and as a result fell behind Intel pretty badly when they went after IPC instead.

Obviously the /g/ tablet is the HP Stream 7. Runs a full desktop OS, costs $99, can actually be user repairable (literally some screws, the service manual can be easily found) and /g/ has already proven itself to jizz over cheap HP tablets in the past.

Compared to Android tablets, not too far off the mark, and people on /g/ can't even think about buying iPads without vomiting blood.
>1gb of ram, 32-bit os
1gb of RAM is sufficient surprisingly, and you know most of the shit that /g/ does (programming foobar in obscure languages) doesn't use that much RAM, and why would you have the 64-bit edition with only 1GB RAM? And what are you going to do on a $99 tablet that requires 64-bit? Fair enough it should take full advantage of the specs it does have, but I don't think it is the end of the world.
>no gnu/linux
Well then you wouldn't like any tablet then, because you probably use bash 98% of the time and terminal emulation on a tablet? Really?

Stop the fucking presses. I think RAM usage is a problem with Chrome anyway and only a few years ago it wasn't even worth your time checking if games worked on lower end hardware, the fact that minecraft could even get over 1fps is pretty amazing when you put it into perspective.

>Battery life 5-6 hours, twice your claim

Well, got anything else?
>>
>>45449519
my atom n455 can run minecraft better using ubuntu.
idle battery life != usable battery life. i'll wait for notebookcheck's review to get a solid number.

i got the hp touchpad on firesale a few years ago. while the idea of full blown windows is tempting it's fundamentally flawed and is not designed for power users/sysadmins/any one who wants to do real work.

Why do I get the feeling that's bullshit for the sake of argument?

>any one who wants to do real work.
Well that's why you have a desktop PC. Again we're not talking about the perfect, all-in-one device, such a thing would be well over a $1000. We are talking about /g/ and if we ignore the freetards (because frankly they are impossible to please anyway, that's why they keep changing distro and arguing with each other about which distribution is the best rather than recognizing that all are designed to fit a certain purpose), then I think the HP wins it. You can run compilers on it and it's affordable to anyone on /g/ and that my friends are two things most of /g/ finds agreeable.

You can program in Rust on the bus home, and you can still afford your anime figurines.

as a tablet it does ok, as a laptop replacement it fails.

sure the price is right but it is gimped; locked down bios, 1gb of ram, tiny screen.

its nice that hp makes such an affordable device, i don't speak for the masses or for /g/ but i was not impressed with the performance, screen size or battery life.

gimme core m with 2gb of ram and a normal efi bios.

X11 is a huge hack, every single thing added onto it has been an extension to other extensions, the simple fact that we have hardware acceleration in X11 is a miracle

In the other hand Wayland was designed from the ground up to be fast, clean and simple to use and maintain

That's the entire point of Tablets: to use phone features in locations where having a big screen isn't an inconvenience. Of course I feel like tablets now are starting to take on laptops running full operating systems

Tablets are far better at consumption (reading books, watching movies, playing light games) tasks than even the lightest laptops. They're alright for some lighter work, too (notetaking and highlighting in digital textbooks come to mind). They're also finding uses in music production as virtual switchboards and on the road scratchpads (there are full-fledged DAWs available for the iPad).

In some cases they're also just more comfy than a laptop could possibly be (smaller, lighter, noiseless, and the good ones very rarely get hot) and they can function as a nice quick fallback if you're out somewhere and your laptop's battery has died.

I will never advocate them as a replacement for laptops (what MS is doing is just retarded) but they're not bad devices to have at your bedside or in your bag.

Chinese have made a working port of the kirikiri 2 engine. I've finished couple of VNs on my phone and it has worked fine.

I'm really on the fence with the Jolla Tablet atm. I want a Jolla product to try out on one hand, but I really want Jolla 2 more than a tablet. Although the tablet isn't inexpensive, I don't really want a tablet altogether when I have convertible laptop already to do work and getting a big screen media consumption device even at that low of a price seems iffy.
