VPS thread?

Why is HostGator charging $20/ month for the most basic VPS with no options when others are $5-$8/ month with better specs and you can choose your OS?

The only thing i really like about HostGator is that their site is lightweight and mostly static. I can't stand excessive scripts, bloat, and problems in a business website. It gives off a bad impression.

SELinux is a security/permissions thing that comes enabled by default in Fedora and is absolutely retarded for everything except very specialised servers.

Not really, it prevents most exploits. You harden a PC considerably by just having it enabled.

>>
>>45389011
How is security handled? Some say they handle all attacks 24/7, and some don't mention it at all.

I'm sure with shared hosting others on the same server would be pissed, so you'd think they would try to prevent that.

You also break lots of things.
The latest version of MongoDB did not work in Fedora last time I tried because of this SELinux bullshit.

It was my job you basement dwellers, and that's besides the point. A permission thing shouldn't be so complex to the point of confusing even the distro's own packagers.

Reminder: RHEL-based distros have antique management utilities, horrendous package managers, and generally outdated repos. In addition to lack of support or serious security issues with modern technologies (OpenStack, LXC).

Also reminder that Debian-based distros get far more installs in enterprise.

Here's an example on how to let a user sudo.

Debian-based:
usermod -a -G sudo user

RHEL-based:
manually visudo it

Don't even get me started on RHEL networking.

Sincerely, a Debian administrator working at a Fortune 500
>>
>>45389068
I manage webservers and there are always skiddies trying to root shit. SELinux means that even if somehow they managed to exploit something it would limit the damage considerably since they couldn't really escalate beyond that process.

>>45389079
It "breaks" things because MongoDB developers suck. The defaults work fine for normal end users, and it's not terribly difficult for sysadmins to understand either. Go watch

But it's Fedora packagers who write the SELinux rules for it.

Obligatory http://www.openstack.org/blog/2013/11/openstack-user-survey-october-2013/

Ubuntu Server is Debian with good management and automation tools (Juju and such). If you use RHEL, you're deprecated. Ubuntu is the most popular distro on public clouds. Ubuntu gets more new installs than RHEL in enterprise.
>>

From a base Fedora install I just run this[1] and then check the boxes I want. It covers most of what you'll want changed out of the box, besides a few small things.

>>
>>45389052
RHEL is a server's distro and the one with the longest lifetime and great update schedule. You can't expect a server's distro to upgrade as a desktop one.

And it has been ages since Fedora was shitty, especially 21 is gearing towards being a great and stable release.

We have a hipster here /s

>RHEL-based distros have antique management utilities
Red Hat actually deprecated ifconfig unlike other distros that still keep it around while they say not to use it for the past decade.

>horrendous package managers
Yum is better than apt, by far. If you think otherwise you're a crazy person. Plus, they're writing a new package manager[1]

>and generally outdated repos
CentOS is old and stable. Fedora is very, very modern. Rawhide is the most bleeding edge distro there is besides compiling shit yourself (Go install Gentoo if you want that).

>manually visudo it
Usermod works in CentOS.

Well you see the big difference is that Ubuntu server is free, while Red Hat requires enterprise to spend money on support.

AHAHAHAHHAHA 10/10 YOU GOT ME GOOD

Daily reminder that your PPA or similar equivalent almost always leads to broken packages, while Debian and Ubuntu do it fine
>>
>>45389208
Both are available in EPEL, so what?
>>
>>45389260
What the hell are you talking about? Usermod has nothing to do with sudo besides allowing you to add a user to a group. You control the permissions of that group with visudo, not usermod.
>>
>>45389280
>Usermod has nothing to do with sudo besides allowing you to add a user to a group.

Members of group sudo in Debian-based distros (including Ubuntu) get sudo access. Do your research before making bullshit claims.

You're both taking the wrong side.
Pacman or Portage or you can get out

I am aware of that. But that's just because Ubuntu/Debian include a group called sudo in sudoers by default. RHEL does the same thing and you can even add a user to the group during install.

What the fuck are you talking about? This is in RHEL sudoers files by default

root ALL=(ALL) ALL

So just do usermod -aG root user and they'll have sudo privileges. Same shit as Ubuntu/Debian except the group is called root instead of sudo.
