It's ThinkPad General again!

What are you running on yours?
What do you use it for?

T440p ordered, I'm waiting for delivery now

Hey /g/, I want to get my dad a thinkpad for christmas.

He mostly browses, tons of email for work, and some light pdf editing for schematics/blueprints.

Any recommendations and where to buy? No real other necessities, not trying to spend tok much.

Used or new as long as it doesnt kill my wallet.
>>
>>45353761
Currently torturing my T420 with Win8.1 4GB of RAM, 320GB HDD and 128GB SSD. 1600x900 panel.

It's a zippy machine. Great for the price (especially when you get it used).
>>
>>45354040
Get him a x201 if he wants small (12.5") or a T420 for 14"
>>
Does X230 Tablet have good battery life ?

Should I go for it or get a Thinkpad Yoga instead ?
>>
>>45354082
Don't want to ask him so as to keep it a surprise, otherwise he'll tell me no (he's not the gift type).

It'd mostly be for in bed, since he's had some medical issues. I might get him a pad to rest it on and a mouse to go along with it.

And best place for used? Ebay? amazon? Newegg had a ton refurbished but doesnt look like the prices are that spectacular.
>>
Definitely thinking about getting one and slapping Debian on it, but I don't know which to buy. I'm on a budget and not trying to spend a fortune on one, I'll splurge I guess on one since all I hear are good things about them. Any ideas? I hear of people buying old ones and putting some light Linux distros on them and being very happy.

Watch ebay, x201 come up for a decent price every now and then. Don't spend more than $250
>>
Got a T420 hd+ with ssd. Its my main machine. I use it for everything.

I just scored a nice dock. Im gonna slap a dac and a hd monitor plus a 60% mechanical keyboard om that shit and use it for its homebase.
>>
>>45354170
Bear in mind that those are old laptops. Not old as in "can't even open Opera 3", but maybe you have to change the HDD or clean them up a little bit.
Check if you can get a good deal on ebay. Also, take a look at the Thinkpad guide on the wiki.
>>
>put up an old hp pavilion for sale
>want to replace it with a thinkpad

Now I just need someone to buy that rather bad HP laptop.
>>
I really want a X201T but I am worried about battery life, fan sound, size and weight and the low resolution.

I just want a notebook with a good active digitizer, good 16:10< screen and good keyboard. Seems like the X201 is the last device that offers these.
>>
>>45354186
Yeah I checked them both out and they are older but that's fine because they'll last longer and there are options to throw in better HDD and more memory which I would most likely do. Then again I might just buy a brand new one since I hear people raving about them all the time which gives me a warm and fuzzy.

I found my x201 for $96 on ebay. I needed to replace the keyboard but besides that it was in great condition.

My T420 was $250 from arrow direct on eBay but I know I could have gotten it cheaper.
>>
Isn't the X230T the best of thinkpads ?
>>
>>45354102
What do you guys think about this ?

is x1 carbon really that bad? Getting a new laptop, sub 1000, and i'm stuck between x240, t440s, and x1 carbon, all can be had for sub 1000 on the black friday deal

>>
I have two beauties.

My X131e is running Fedora 20, and acts like a DHCP and DNS caching server for my home network, also is used by my gf for surfing the net when she's here.

"My" X230 is company property, and was given to me when I started doing pager duty. He has a standardized Windows 7 environment on him, and is a pretty cool little thing. Pic related.
>>
So what are some good questions to ask the seller when you can't personally inspect used ThinkPads?
Like:
>is BIOS locked?
>did you come on it?
etc
>>
>>45354528
Ask if the light still comes on.

>>
Thinking about saving up about 400 and getting a T420, T420s, or T520, and put an SSD in it and get a drive bay to put another 1TB drive I have laying around in it. I also have 8GB of RAM laying around that I would put into it to.

So a T420 with a 250GB SSD and a 1TB HD as well as 8GB of RAM. Would this be a good machine?

>>

>>
>>45354227
I own a X201T. Battery life with the extended battery is roughly around 4h of average use. Fan sound is incredibly quiet. For the weight and size, it fits nicely into my work bag with room to spare so I'm pretty happy with it.
>>
T410s w. 128GB SSD, dedicated graphics, 4GB RAM & Intel Core i5. 1440x900. classic style keyboard.

£200

Goes nicely with my X201s.

Can't imagine life without an SSD now.
>>
>>45355112
I've been thinking about this too.

Where do we go after t420?
w530? I won't mind the chiclet if I can still access and upgrade all the parts. And it doesn't have that fucking clickpad.

I bought a T23 just for collection off some old guy in a flea market

T61 2.6/8GB/1TB WD running CentOS docked and on a RAM vehicle laptop mount atop a steel stand I fabricated. Feeds 24" Viewsonic monitor which faces my recliner. Mice are two Logitech trackballs, one on each recliner arm. I used 3M fabric adhesive to glue Velcro to the recliner arms and put stickyback Velcro on the bottoms of the mice. They can't slide off but can be positioned as needed. Old Microsoft natural keyboard sits on my lap when in use.

This arrangement beats using a laptop conventionally, and the laptop is its own UPS which is handy because local power is sometimes interrupted by storms or niggers hunting telephone poles with their cars.

X200 lives on another stand to my left in a RAM mount which holds my Logitech K810 Bluetooth keyboard I use for that PC and for my S4 which lives in a RAM X-Grip mount and stays on charge.

This is comfy as fuck and would be a near ideal setup for an invalid. Recumbent seating is better ergononmically than the traditional chair/dest arrangement.

Someone in a previous thread asked why I run CentOS. It's because it's highly reliable, does whatever I need, and has a long support cycle. Change for changes sake or to amuse artfag GUI designers (Ubuntu...) doesn't SERVE me. Stability does. I also run Windows in VMs for any apps I may want and to stay familiar since I work on PCs. Unless someone is a programmer or developer nothing bleeding edge is worth bothering with, and any curiosity may be explored in VMs.

X200 runs Win7 for school and has no problem with AutoCAD 2015 doing basic work.

Also have a T61 in a RAM mount in my truck for road use and navigation. Piss on a tiny GPS or phone screen when I can have 15.4" instead. When on road phone sits in another X-Grip (I love RAM mounts, and getting them cheap off Ebay) so I can conveniently tether it to the T61.

I used to care about performance. Now I care as much or more about CONVENIENCE and ERGONOMICS. I can affordably have Thinkpads where ever I want a PC.

Typically used for surfing, programming, SSH/RDP/VNC'ing into a server for proprietary work stuff like Matlab.
