They have these things called Voxels, and these guys at Voxon have been able to create a crude implementation of a holographic device using voxels... I say crude because it's big, loud, and janky... It's 3D effect seems to be generated by moving an LCD pannel on the Z axis rapidly enough to give the full effect of 3D, and using the monitors Z plane to choose the image to draw (I may be wrong, but these are my assumptions based off of watching videos on it, i'm no developer of it or for it)
