I want to install windows on a vps that does not offer it. Normally to install unsupported OS, I boot a live environment, install qemu, and run iso, but windows is silly and throws everything and the kitchen sink on the iso making it too large for my budget vps ram.

Can dd do stdin/stdout? I think I could create my image in qemu, boot live environment, then do something like:

dd if=win_qemu.img of=stdout |ssh host "dd if=stdin of=/dev/sda1"

If I have two 60W bulbs in my room installed next to each other, am I getting 120W of light in my room or just 60W?
>>
>Stupid question thread

watts refers to the amount of energy the bulbs use. Light emission is lumens.

More light but not double the light.
>>
>>45266017

I have a stupid question : I just put together my first computer, but it won't turn on, and when I plug it in, a light flow of air will come out of the PU and the front light blinks slowly. Does anybody knows what I did wrong ? Is it salvageable ?
>>

Looking at extremes is a good tool to solve these kind of problems.

imagine you had an array of 1 billion lightbulbs. Would you still get only 60W of light? obviously no. It would be very bright.

>>
>>45266160
Shit, I hope it's not that. Thnaks for your input
>>
>>45266078
even less. depends on the efficiency of the light source.
Normal light bulbs have around 12Lm/W or an efficiency of 5%. That would make 2*720Lm = 1440Lm at 120W.
Cheap Leds will give you around 85-100Lm/W
So a 20W led would give you way more output. But this is another story.

The 60W are mostly heat. so no. you won't get 60W light. You would get "3W light" and 57W heat.
>>
>>45266168
Forgot to mention that all the fans and lights worked while the mobo was damaged.

When I do this in LaTeX:
\begin{description}
\item[First] The first item
\item[Second] The second item \\
Some extra info
\item[Third] The third etc
\end{description}

I don't get the newline text on the second item indented as expected; right below the "The second item" part. Instead it's kinda in between the "Second" and "The second item". Don't know who thought this was a good idea.

How do I fix this?
>>
>>45266099
Troubleshooting mobo's 101:

If you have a pcspeaker, install it so you can hear error codes. Sometimes the lights blink in error codes (like fast-short-short-fast), then google the error code. Sometimes it will also print messages if you connect a VGA monitor.

Remove everything, including ram and cpu and see if you get no cpu error. Put cpu in, see if you get no memory error. If you get neither, you are fucked.

The best hash is the strongest you can do without bottlenecking. If you are doing thousands of password checks a second, the best hash is different than if you are doing one hash an hour.

The strongest hash is one that never completes, so infinite rounds of sha256.

If the two data lines are shorted (common signal for take as much power as you want) it will charge fast. But not "super sonic speed". Normal usb standard is 500ma. Phones will charge at 1A at most. Some devices maybe 1.5A but everything >500ma is out of the usb standard

I have a system that I use as a spare computer that I sometimes use for server-y things. I turn it off at night in an effort to save electricity/money.

For some reason, the server has stopped shutting down properly. Everything seems to close (from what I can tell), but the computer itself is still on. It didn't use to do this, and I figure something must be causing it to hang.

The method I'm using to shut the system down is by using a cronjob which I've set to fire systemctl poweroff (though I've tried other commands too)

How can I fix this, and where should I look for logs?

The system is running Arch, and I've tried upgrading several times, but nothing's fixed the problem...

It's best to avoid fragmenting partitions. Before partitioning, you can tell MyDegrag to move everything to beginning of disk. If you're installing Ubuntu, you can just select "largest contiguous free space" during installation.

I had DuckDuckGo set up as my default search engine. DDG has, among other things, an option to type something into the URL bar [search keys] and then finish with a sign indicating a specific site. My understanding is that if I get a new CPU I have to reinstall windows. Mods are usually only made for games for which the developer has made a mod api. You have access to only a compiled binary and not the source code, so the language in which it was written is irrelevant to you.

if your hard drive looks like this it's an IDE drive and you are going to want to get a new one and transfer all of your files over. New mobos don't support IDE anymore

You didnt state a resolution, so I dont know about your monitor but you definitely have enough RAM.

For streaming you would need a good CPU GPU combo, I'd say go for GPU first then CPU. then if you really feel like it get a secondary monitor.

the rules of mixing RAM are that, yes you can do it as long as they're nearly the same, but it's a bit counter productive as all of the RAM will always run as slow as the slowest module. RAM manufacturers also recommend against adding any additional RAM alongside existing RAM, even if it's the exact same RAM from the same factory with the same part numbers. i've got no explanation for that.

http://www.lifehacker.com.au/2010/07/what-are-the-rules-on-mixing-two-different-types-of-ram/

so you can go ahead and do it if you want to be lazy and save time/money. it will work just fine, but if it were me i'd pick up a brand new 2x8 16GB kit black friday/cyber monday, and hock the old 8GB kit on ebay.

i bet you listened to the idiots in build threads who try to flaunt their terrible working knowledge of computers by telling you to go for cheaper RAM kits claiming you could just add more RAM later. always do opposite of what /g/ says.

Hi /g/,

I have a 2010 MBP with Yosemite on it and lately it's been really slow. Now at first I thought, oh it must be all the torrents/downloads I have so I did factory wipe and deleted everything on it.

At first it ran a little smoother but, again, it started to feel real sluggish. Last night I kept getting the rainbow wheel of death for almost anything I did, even a simple task such as opening a new tab on Chrome.

Now I don't really do much on it but surf the internet, some torrents here and there and play Football Manager 2014 (/sp/fag here)

I've ran two different anti/malware/virus removers and no viruses seem to be on it. I've also used Onyx to try and clean it up/purge the memory on it and no avail.

Now I get muh planned obsoleteism but really, this MBP is not all that old (4 years) but I'm just starting to think of getting a new laptop this upcoming black friday if I don't figure something out to speed this MBP.

Any suggestions /g/? Greatly appreciated

You missed the point.

Large format is commercially available in film only, and the scanned files are really, really huge.
Over 1GB huge.
And could be like 400 megapixels or something, depends on scanner.

Of course, not all of this is actual resolution, but still the files that need to be processed and then cleaned for "redundant" pixels that aren't actual resolution, are massive.

>the idea of editing huge photos on a laptop screen as tiny as they are really bugs the fuck out of me
Agreed on that though, if it's for serious work.
Quick and dirty edits, proofing, etc., is alright though.

Anyone here ever had mpd hanging your music?

Well, stupid questions then.

Are there any mice other than the RAT series that have a horizontal thumb scroll wheel? After a few years I've gotten too used to having it.

funny you think i don't know large format exists or something, niggers were shooting large format slides decades ago. i work with these oldfags, they're cool.

i seriously doubt said guy is into shooting large format and scanning and editing on a laptop but it's possible.

we can be /p/ all night and talk about how larger film/sensor size gives shallower DOF and allows you to use longer focal lengths for a given framing of a subject, but i see little desire for shooting large format in the age of plebs claiming iphones are good enough.

What is some good forensic analysis software for video and image files?

qbittorrent slows my internet connection even when I'm not downloading anything.
Does this happen in all torrent clients?

Film scanners just produce monster files.

For instance, a 3600dpi scan of a 35mm frame, ~16megapixels, is a ~60MB uncompressed .tiff

Let alone bigger negatives.

>but i see little desire for shooting large format in the age of plebs claiming iphones are good enough.
Meh, true.
People don't print anymore, they view everything online.
LF really comes to life (and any photo actually) when printed on good paper by a master printer.
Preferably big, for lf.

Youtube---

how is the subscribe list sorted???

- it's not sorted by subscribe-by date
- it's not alphabetical obviously!
- it's not by most recently updated either

i don't really care that much but i'd rather that it had some logical ordering

i know man, i love getting big prints done, all clients want are fucking 800x facebook sized shit.

I need to buy a SD card for my phone. MicroSD or regular SD? Which are the drawbacks of each one? Which brand? Which size has offers the best storage/price ratio? Which Class has the best speed/price without cogging the device while browsing or recording video?

Thanks in advance. The wikia has nothing in this regard and I don't want to overthink this issue.

ah thanks, that default option made no sense

Since the SD card is for a phone you'd need a microSD. There aren't really any drawbacks with either except regular SD's tend to have higher capacities. As for class, the higher the better. I recommend a class 10 SD card especially if you plan on recording any video to it. Just buy the cheapest SD you can. If you need a brand just go with Sandisk.

Checked my phone (I should have done that before...). You are totally right about the microSD. I'll look for Sandisk Class 10 and check the best GB/price I can find.

Unless somebody recommends some other brand.

Thanks for the quick reply.

Is there anywhere you can download an ISO image of Windows 7 that has the windows updates slipstreamed into it? I know you can make them yourself but was wondering if there any pre-made ones around with mostly recent updates integrated. My install disc is old (pre-SP1) and will come with a gazillion windows updates after install.

what usb network adapter should i get
>>
>>45274260
The best you'll get are images with SP1 already installed. Stick "digital river" in your searches and you should find some links

Yeah, I found those. I was hoping I could find something with more of the recent updates integrated but this will have to do.
