My x200 arrived yesterday, it's lovely.
Have installed a minimalist gentoo, need to set up x windows when I get in from work
>>
>>43308036
How do I get better battery life on x200?
I installed both tlp and powertop and still don't get anything near the ~10 hours people on here brag about. I'm running xubuntu, btw.
>>
>>43308876
It may be that the battery is in bad condition.
>>
The educational facility where I work has changed their minds from macbooks to thinkpad yogas.

Is there any reliability issue I should know about yogas compared to other lines in the modern renovo lineup?

I think they're sold because of a PD they went to and my X61T
>>
>>43309247
From what I have heard the yoga laptops are one of the most reliable modern thinkpad lines. However I have heard that they might have issues with ghosting.
>>
>>43308036
Daily question.
Is the x60 worth 260EU if I cannot get it for cheaper?
>>
>>43309247

Well they're overpriced and shit, but I wouldn't say any worse than other modern "thinkpads"

Should have just gone with macbooks really, they're overpriced but they're not shit
>>
>>43309352
Why the fuck would pay 250 EU for a 8 year old laptop? You could find a Mac cheaper than that, fucking hell.
>>
>>43309407
Recommend a good thinkpad for that price range. No lenovo shit.
>>
>>43309407

Because they're good?

Thanks for that, also, is 2GB ram enough? I'd like to upgrade it to 4gb is that is even possible.
>>
>>43309568
It supports up to 4 gb so it is possible, and it really depends on what you want to do with it, but I would recommend 4gb.
>>
guys i have a t520i with a dual core cpu. I'd like to upgrade it to a quad core variant.

I've read that the quad-core cpu requires a larger heat-sink.
How do i go about finding the correct heat-sink for the quad-core cpu?
>>

No, I'm saying at that's C2D MBP price in Germoney.

I work at a place were they take apart electronics people have thrown away. I was looking around at the grates holding some of the dissembled computer hardware and saw the screen of a x200, broken.

If I see a Thinkpad in a good state again I'll most likely take one home. We mostly have business grade hardware such as KVM switches, thin clients, switches.

Using debian with openbox btw.

Hey ThinkBros.

I've just set up FreeBSD 11.0 Current on my T530 (i7 quadcore with optimus intel + nvidia nvs 4500m gfx and 8 gb ram). It work great but one problem. You see, the two finger scroll, I have not found out how to make it work!

Any helping available?
>>
>>43310679
That's the sound of it dying, I've replaced quite a few of those. Thankfully they're cheap on ebay and easy to replace,

Open it up and give it a good cleaning and replace the paste so it'll toggle the fan less often to increase current lifespan as well as deal with your heat issues. If the fan dies it won't be able to boot as a safety precaution and you'll have to hit escape to ignore the prompt and prevent it from shutting down.

And remember to check out thinkwiki, lots of debian guides on there for that model.

x140e.jpg

Hello /g/entlemen, I made the mistake of buying a gayming loptop for ~$900 last year because I refused to listen to the cries and warnings of /g/. After selling it and saving up some extra dosh, I have about 1,300 dollars to spend on computers. I have about $700 set aside for a MicroATX build, and the rest for buying a thinkpad.

Now, here's my question to you;
I'm looking at two different ThinkPads, the x140e and the C720. The x140e caught my eye because:
-AMD APU
-<$500
-Built like a brick
-Matte screen
-Rave reviews

However, I was also looking at the c720 because:
-keyboard
-holy fuck that keyboard
-ibm thinkpad i.e. not shitty
-people will look at me funny
-maybe i could put in an ssd or upgrade the cpu or something

Should I shell out $600 dollars for an x140e with an SSD for light work and gaming, or a couple hundred for a C720 for light work in emacs, and maybe some Dwarf Fortress or OpenXCOM?
>>
>>43312008
> x140e

> C720
old is old

get a used x6x or x20x instead
>>
>>43312008

Both your choices are shit, get an x201
>>
>>43312008
>Should I shell out $600 dollars for a new laptop
No.

X200(s)
X201(s)
X220
(X230)

These are your options.
>>
>>43312098

x220 and x230 are shit

Also for the X series always get the tablet versions for the IPS screens
>>
>>43312008
>AMD hardware on a laptop
>ever

I had two AMD laptops, and they were shit. almost literally all they can do well is fry your balls.

>Dwarf Fortress or OpenXCOM
DF is heavy on CPU, so 720 probably won't be enough to run that smoothly (That sounds weird in my head actually)

Something like x201 would be better choise I think.

My first ThinkPad (X200) is out for delivery. I've been thinking of putting Debian on it, but I may go with Arch if I can figure out the install process. Any other X200 users here? Does the wireless work without any configuring when installing Arch or Gentoo?
>>
>>43312858
You'll need to configure arch, thats the very nature of it. I would highly recommend using and sticking to Debian however. Arch is a fun learning OS, but for a daily driver you need a stable operating system and you really won't miss anything.
>>
>>43312903
I'll go with Debian, then. Thanks!
>>
>>43312903
I used Crunchbang as a daily driver for my x61t for quite a while, but Stable-branch repos are very old, I couldn't play ADOM natively in #! because glibc is old (one day I even broke my install completely by trying to update it). Moving to Sid repos doesn't really solved the problem, so I decided to move to ArchBang and so far I like it. But Arch is Arch, quite a bit of tinkering required to get it to work the way you want.
>>
>>43313196
I do admit, stable debian is quite old, but most people run testing. Testing is basically an ubuntu without the bloat and for day to day use is still stable. Sucks you ran into a problem like that though, #! is a great debian based distro.
>>
>>43313330
#! is basically a buggy Debian netinstall with openbox preinstalled...
>>
>>43313330
I agree, #! is great. Probably the best distro I ever used. But sadly doesn't doesn't quite suits my needs.

if one is to
- browse
- watch videoz in max hd
- some codez
- need long battery life

would it be better to get an older cheap thinkpad from ebay, or get a chromebook?

linux would be installed so doesn't matter that it comes with chromeos.

chromebooks seem to win because they tout long battery life.
>>
>>43314312

Depends how important battery life is to you, chromebooks get good battery life but are absolute shit in every other way
>>
Before I pull the trigger I just need to ask, is 320 dollaroos a good deal for a t420 with 1600x900 display, i5-2540M, 4gb memory, and a 250 gb hdd that I am going to swap out for a ssd?

Yes but the screen replacement will cost more than the whole laptop

I'm guessing it means that it is BIOS locked to only use 4gb, but if you flash the BIOS with a new one then you can use 8gb.

If you set Windows up properly via the Lenovo Power Manager, and if you set up whatever Linux up properly with TLP, then they will be about the same.

OS X will probably perform badly and be missing features since hackintoshes are hackjobs and it's not made for non-Macs.

I upgraded from a Toshiba Satellite L305 to a Thinkpad T60p. Since they're both 15.4 inch, vintage 2008 machines, I feel I can make some very fair comparisons.

The Thinkpad feels more physically solid. The plastic body of the Toshiba flexes perceptibly when it's picked up, and the screen wobbles slightly while typing. The Thinkpad's metal hinges stay just where the screen is adjusted, and the matte black rubberized lid does not attract a litany of fingerprints and smudges like the Toshiba's glossy plastic.

Typing on the Thinkpad is much, much, much better. This is the number one reason I chose the Thinkpad. Laptop keyboards are all terrible, and the Thinkpad is the best of a terrible lot. It's comparable in typing quality to a decent desktop rubber dome keyboard, and the Toshiba keyboard was a mushy nightmare. As a bonus, "mushy nightmare" is becoming the most popular keyboard style in the world because we live in an unjust and perverse universe.

My Thinkpad has a 1680x1050 screen, compared to the 1280x800 Toshiba. A downright frightening number of laptops still come in 1366x768 even today. Apparently I don't even have one of the "good" Thinkpads because I don't have the 1600x1200 IPS screen, but the screen I have suits me just fine - and makes me wonder why the FUCK every laptop in the world is now 16:9 aspect ratio EXCLUSIVELY.

And /g/ will frown on this but the T60p runs League of Legends, Team Fortress 2, Left 4 Dead 2 and Minecraft quite handily and Skyrim somewhat poorly but still playable. The Intel graphics in the Toshiba couldn't really handle any of those. As far as I can tell those specific games are what most people buy $1000+ gaming laptops for so it's kind of amusing.

>>
>>43319315

Works fine, the most intensive stuff I've ever done with it is play videos and it can do that fine, has no issues playing high bitrate 1080p bluray rips

Only issue is if you're using linux you may have to hack a bit to get hardware h464 decoding depending on the distro, I run gentoo and had to manually edit the libva-intel-driver ebuild to use the g45-h264 git branch
>>
>>43319315
For web browsing, it's pretty good. You will probably want more ram than 1GB though. I have no experience with inkscape or virtual dj on it. I'm afraid that at the minute the most I've used it for is web browsing and compiling a few short FORTRAN programs. It can handle that ok.

You can, and it won't last.
The noise is from the surface in the sleeve bearing no longer being straight or the right inner diameter. It wore the hole out larger. Adding oil temporarily fills up the extra space and dampens the oscillation of it rattling around inside the loose bearing, but that will only last a week to a month.

Has anyone had any trouble with the ribbon cable coming loose in the back of an x201 tablets screen? I keep having to open up my screen and push it back in. I'm going to go and buy some better tape tomorrow but it has really been getting to me. Is there no clip to hold that thing in?
>>
>>43322828
No.
It's supposed to be secured in place with kapton tape, and the connection is really tight anyway. Are you sure you've actually got it in all the way flush? And that the cable lower down is properly taped to the screen with cloth pressure tape like it should be?
Maybe post a pic?

Is there like a guide for new thinkpads? Windows tweaks? (thinkvantage, drivers, etc.) GNU+Linux twekas? (power management, drivers, etc.)

Congrats the 701C is a cute machine. Dislike the feel of the keyboard but well, I love everything else heh
$40 is a great deal, were you the San Diego guy I lost to?

>>43316963
Get the M4800 with its QHD display and K2100m CPU

>>43317185
Oh yes, and next is that it wasn't produced in the correct IBM factory either.

>>43319046
The WSXGA+ screens I have seen are not that bad at all, I played LoL on my 14" T60p, but since I'm spoiled with the W700ds, I've stopped.
Never tried Skyrim, but thanks for letting me know it can be played, may just get a few more games just so I can install them on my old systems to sell.

>>43319076
They aren't telling you everything about it.
15" T60p laptops came standard with an IPS UXGA or SXGA+ screen, which were known for their wide viewing angles.

Here is a comparision of a W500 and a 'Frankenpad' T60/1 (15" T60p with the mobo chassis modified to fit a 14" T61 mobo)
You can see the difference between TFT and IPS technology.
Its /g/ hype, like mechanical keyboards

About as fucked as getting pulled over by the cops after ripping a sick bong

>>43319547
Try out a 15" T60p ThinkPad first, and then think about getting the slight performance boost from a T61, all in all, the 140M GPU from the T61 vs the V5200 on the T60p didn't seem to have that much of a difference when I played LoL.

But I did like it more, yet I think its because I was quite happy that I was able to do such a "hack" job.

Yes, no need to switch cables or whatnot, just make sure you have a spudger or some sort of long flat object that isn't a normal flat head screwdriver to take off the LCD bezel.

Decent price too, but its because it has some deadspots.

>FireGL
no its just a T60p, unless it has a W500 mobo inside it.

>>43324238
>buying it and still needing a battery because it degraded overtime

>>43324396
Not going to lie I eventually would like one. I hear that Macbooks have a decent student discount, plus the refurb ones are decently priced.

>>43324462
No, make one.
>that CPU, GPU, Screen guide I've been too lazy to finish

Would a T60, T61, or X60/61 be able to run Dolphin? Or would I have to buy a later model to do that? I want to play some gamecube games on it.
>>
On my x200 tablet sometimes when I start X the backlight dies and the screen is just black, then I exit X and it comes back on

What's the problem?
>>
>>43324819
need a good cpu for emulation, minimum i5 imo
>>
>>43324880
Would the T60, T61, or X60/61 be able to run an N64 emulator at least?
>>
>>43324939
Kinda, if it's one with one of the fastest CPU's and a decent GPU (aka not a Intel iGPU like those fucking GMA's)
I never had a thinkpad, so I'm talking out of my ass
But I do have the same iGPU that the T60 haves, and a pretty low end C2D at 1.8 ghz, and it's able to do jack shit when it's about heavy stuff, it could barely emulate PS1 so I guess it would have problems with N64 stuff, and it couldn't do NDS
Best bet go with a later thinkpad
>>
>>43324939
Probably.

I ran a Sega Saturn emulator decently on an X61T (SSD, L7500 1.6GHz CPU, integrated gfx, SXGA+)
I played Rayearth, Radiant Silvergun, Panzer Dragoon with decent FPS, light lag here and there.
I know the N64 is a stronger system, but it should do OK, it will be playable.

Sandy Bridge ThinkPads are starting to get down to $250 if you have patience.

Is $200 for a refurbished T410 a good deal? Also, is it generally better to get a used or a refurbished?
>>
>>43325713
If it has an i7, nvidia gpu, and 1440x900 display, then yeah it's a good deal.

>is it generally better to get a used or a refurbished?
Literally the same exact thing.
>>
>>43325713

Depends

A used one could have been owned by a /a/-tier pedo and a refurbished one could be mangled beyond repair (or will just need some configurations changed) if its some shitty supplier
>>
Alright /g/, I am pretty damn convinced to get a thinkpad.

I want it just to browse 4chins and word processing.

What's my best bet?
>>
>>43325813

x201
>>
>>43325813
*60-*61 will be more than enough for that, but I'd probably go for something newer.
>>
>>43325833
>>43325855

Something like this? I honestly am not sure what to look for. I plan on putting a 120GB SSD inside, using it for notes at school and such.

>>
>>43325968
you said you'll use it only for 4chan and word. Tablet is unnecessary imo
>>
>>43325968
i7 is overkill. Using it for notes is like shooting ants with Barrett .50 cal.

Also, tablet is useful if you going to use pen input. I don't use it on my x61t at all.
>>
>>43325990

Didn't even notice that. Will keep looking.
>>
>>43325968
>4channing and web-browsing
>posts link of a tablet with an i7

Well, the IPS screens are better than the TN of the other standard X201 units. (picture wont look like shit at angles.)
But it is limited to WXGA
A special few X201s and X300/1 come with WXGA+ screen, I recommend those for web surfing, espeically since you could only see 1/3 of your word document if its WXGA crap

It'll probably end somehwere around $270, the i7 would drain the battery faster than you'd think but it will def last you a good while
An i5 is sufficient for an ultraportable, especially at what you will be doing.

Get a T400 maybe if a T60 is too old of you.
>>
Hey guys, I'm looking for an t60p with an 2.33GHz processor and an ok-good screen. What is a good price with things like a battery, hdd, etc, and a good price with out those things.
>>
>>43324540
What do you mean "lost to". Did the guy tell you that it was already bought
