it handles netflix, word, spotify, torrents and all that and only stutters on youtube once in a while. (Why the hell does everything on the web including netflix run smoother than youtube?) It will be fine. As long as you don't plan on playing farcry or anything like that.

The clit mouse works well when you need it. I don't really miss the track pad at all but when I am doing anything that requires more precision and speed I just use a mouse.

I have never used a trackpad that I liked.

I went with an X200t simply because I knew it could handle my needs and I did not need it for anything special. at $110 I can't complain. Even got a brand new sealed ultrabase for it for $10 more.

>>
>>43280100
Well damn. What kind of institution should I look out for?
>>
>>43280136
No, sadly I can't take them home, they have to go to the recycling center or put on a bid list to be sold.

I'm 99% sure the recyclers just wipe the drives and sell them on ebay for insane profit.
>>
>>43280171
I work at a public school, I know hospitals and some libraries have them too.
>>
>>43280085

How compatible are these keyboards?

For example, will it fit my X200 t? I like the grey keys.

I figured compatibility would be good since the keyboard on my X200 has the think light button and this thing doesn't have a think light, which leads me to believe this keyboard is shared with different models.
>>
Is this a scam or does this computer really exist? The t420 with an i7, nvidia card, and 1600x900?
>>
>>43280171

He's right.

I run a non-profit after school program and a teacher at one of the schools i work at just gave me 3 R40 ThinkPads.

They aren't anything special but I am building a small arsenal of old laptops so that I can hold free basic computer classes for my community sometime next year.

I also recently was given 5 Dell E6500 Latitudes by a somewhat local IT firm.

lesson of the day, you would not believe the shit people throw away.
>>
>>43280199
X200 went to a completely different scissor layout.
You can use X4X keys on the X6X, and T4X keys on the T6X, T400, T500. You need to swap the scissors too, but the underlying base will accept them perfectly.
>>
>>43280329

>>
>>43280329
>>43280361
Oh! And there are two completely different kinds of keyboards in the X4X and X6X series. Look at the bottom of the keyboard where there's a little metal can covering the trackppoint circuit boards. The 'four black dots' models will trade keys with other 'four black dots', and the 'three black dots' models trade with other 'three black dots' models. The four black dot models have wider scissors and a slightly superior feel due to a more stable travel. You can depress a key even at the extreme corner and it travels down smoothly. The 3dot models will just let the key tilt sideways.

The X200 also has three-dot and four-dot variants, but they're not cross-compatible backwards.
>>
>>43280463
Thanks!

>>43280272
We don't have a ton of storage space at the school, so it's actually more efficient to simply donate or give to recyclers. I'm also not sure if it would be worth it to hire someone to sell them on ebay, not that I could.

Need some help, the only thing wrong with my x201 is the god awful screen. I know it can be replaced, but where can I get the screen that fits it and is 1080p?
>>
>>43281537
>1080p
The display isn't even 16:9. I think the only panel upgrades available are 1440x900 (which is TN) and a 1280x800 IPS (maybe AFFS) panel which is significantly better quality, but still low resolution.
>>
>>43281537
you can't change the screen
>>
>>43281610
But other people have changed the screen on an x200 and x201. Phones have a 1080p display, I know thinkpads can. I know that you need an extra cable to make it happen, but it's possible.
>>
>>43281645
Any panel that was not made for the same or similar models of ThinkPads will probably require a custom made cable and firmware/BIOS modifications.
>>
>>43281677
Exactly, I just need to know where I can find a 1080p ips panel that will fit.
>>
>>43280027
>>43279992
You can also drop an X200 palmrest right onto an X201.

My T60p's touchpad is a... crap magnet. Every time I look at it there's something wedged around the edges that needs to be scraped out. Something that probably came off of me :(

Gimp's pressure sensitivity setup is retarded; you have to set up the device you want to use _with that device_. Meaning, you go to paintbrush, open up the 'Dynamics' tool configuration, then make all the settings _using the stylus_ not mouse. Because the second you touch the mouse, Gimp flips back to configuring the mouse, not the stylus.

Halp, based /g/ generals.
I am looking for a 12 to 14 inch laptop with a quad core and a 1080p panel. I am a student, which basically means the cheaper, the better. I know I could get a w520, but they are expensive, and I really don't want to be getting one with an nvidia gpu. I could buy a t420 and slap in a quad core and a different panel, but is that worth it ? Should I go somewhere else ?
A good chassis, and a clitoris for pointing are a must.

>>
>>43283278
For the T420's, you can only swap in a quad core if it has dedicated graphics. Integrated graphics = no go.
>>
>>43283368
For fucks sake.

rMBP's suck, they don't have the thinkpoint or whatever it was called. And the keyboard is shit compared to my x200.
Too bad I can't shell out 2k £ for a brand new t440.
Also, why do none of the x220/30/40 laptops available with a quad ? I mean, it's not like I love waiting for stuff to compile. Unless I'm getting paid for it.
>>
>>43283861
The X Series are ultraportables. They're not really made for compiling. That's what the W Series is for.
>>
>>43283972
Yes, but wasn't the selling point of the original X series that you would get basically the same performance a mid range T series laptop would give you with lower power consumption and, primarily, a superior form factor ?
>>
>>43284008
I've always found the T Series to be the perfect size myself. The X Series always lacked options for a dedicated GPU, and I thought they used lower voltage CPUs with slightly less performance, but maybe that wasn't the case for all models.

the XxxS models do, but, I think, right up till x220, you could get the fastest CPU with a TDP limit of 40-45W inside most of the regular models. It's a shame that the X240 now is available only as an ultrabook with an ultrabook CPU.
Still, if I want a quad core which I can afford, I have to buy a t520, which is a bit bigger than I would like my next laptop to be. At the moment, I have a malfunctioning x200s, it doesn't charge the battery, and no, it IS a motherboard defect. And I have an x60 as well, which isn't even 64 bit, so rather useless for modern development.

Well the T420 will have longer battery life (assuming the batteries are in good or similar condition) and also has an Ultrabay, which means cd/dvd reader or a second HDD. T420 can take mSATA SSD's too. Also optional dedicated graphics.

X201t would be slightly smaller and lighter and tablet, obviously.

If you're looking for a desktop replacement and it's going to be your main machine, definitely a T420.

Yep still here, mostly in the Retro thread.
hwtools.net sells an actual full sd slot for the WWAN slot. But if there's adequate empty space inside the ThinkPad, I guess the microSD to SD adapter could work better.

Hell yeah, 2 extra full sized sd card slots inside your laptop using 2 adaptors on top of the Mini PCI-E connector you link to on your site. Forget the single sd card adaptor you posted that's bullshit.

It's a shame X4x users can't use this considering the limited 1.8" PATA options they have.

So I want 4 gigs of ram in both my x61 laptops but looking at ram prices for DDR2 SODIMMs it's going to cost almost half what I paid for it. Because I also want it in a single stick so I can have 8 gigs as an option in the future it increases the price quite a bit.

Are these prices ever going to go down? Now that most newer laptops have soldered on ram it seems that they'll have less incentive to liquidate their old inventory as quickly. I don't know if it's worth buying a 2 gig stick now and getting a a 4 gig stick later on and just leaving it at 6 gigs each.

While you folks with your 16:9 touchscreens, chicklet keyboards and gigantic trackpads will get to have 32 or 64 gigs of ram and current processors in your newer chinkpads I just can't deal with widescreen on a laptop on top of everything else. This is all I have left as a reminder of when computing was a sane hobby. You take out a 4:3 laptop in public now and people chuckle thinking it's an antique, eventually they'll be be reacting the same at people who use physical keyboards and mice 10 years from now.
>>
>>43290277
Prices on DDR2 won't be going anywhere, the 8GB kits will be staying at the high $120 price.
>>
>>43290264
Pretty sure all the lights blink upon boot regardless of what options or peripherals are plugged in. Even the hard drive access lights up when there's nothing in there to access.

Anyway, my point is I have so much shit and I can't stand it. Laptop is too big, netbook is too weak, phone is too big, some classes dont allow computers so can't use tablet.

My plan:

Well the T series uses socket based processors. Just need to find the right one and when it comes to quad cores, I think you need to do some magic tricks (something about only boards with discrete graphics accepting them). But in that respect, i5 to i7 within the same range isn't really worth it since it'll also drink a little more.

But if you know what you're doing with the display then that of course would be a good idea.

Thank you /g/, my X220 arrived yesterday, and it's the best purchase I've ever made.

£200 got me near mint condition, i5 2.5ghz processor, 4gb ram, 320gb hdd and the battery still lasts 6 hours on powersaving mode.

Was pretty surprised about how small and light it was when I unboxed it, and the build quality is amazing. Feels so solid. There's lots of little extra touches to it too, like a little light near the webcam you can turn on with Fn+PgUp for working in the dark, an easily removable hdd, and a slightly bigger battery which tilts the keyboard towards you when it's sitting on the desk.

10/10 would recommend again and again.

Any advice on cleaning my keyboard?

Also, my T60p is still getting really high temperatures. Although, I've found that if I elevate it with a book and leave the area underneath the fan to the air and not against a solid surface, my temps are good.

I'm talking, flat against a wood table, the GPU can get to 97-98, but with the side not under the fan being elevated with a book, it tends to stay at 78 to the low 80s.

Any advice for this as well? I replaced the AS5 on mine less than a month ago and I've already done the pre-1982 copper penny GPU cooling trick.

Spending money on good hardware. Does it burn your pockets? Good goy
>>
>>43297483
Bump.

Apparently, my temperatures only actually rise when charging.

Has anyone else had this issue?

About to order a T42, how do I know weather or not it's BIOS-locked?
>>
>>43299942
Ask the seller? If they lie, get a refund?
>>
>>43299007
Seriously fuck it is times like this I absolutely hate Europe, in USA you can get away with being poor because everything is so goddamn cheap.

Since it is so hard to find a decent deal on a t420 with an i7 and a nvidia card. Would it be possible to get one with an i5 and no dedicated graphics and then just swap out the motherboard?
>>
>>43300213
No forget the i7 I don't need it, but is there some way to get a nvidia card?

Should I buy a T440s for $1400? Parents are paying for it for school. CS major.
>>
>>43300430
no

Get a T430 with good specs, a dock, a 30" 2560x1600 monitor, and mouse and keyboard.

What is the best laptop around without a mouse pad?
Reasons for no mouse pad:
>never use it
>it get's in the way while typing
>it looks ugly as hell

I have been searching for days now for a good laptop without one but most either have it or it's a tablet (which I'm not after).

A bonus would be if OpenBSD supports it.

I've heard that the thinkpads have this but it seems like leveno are not producing them anymore.

Looks like I'll have to look at some old ones.

What is the point in having it if I'm not going to use it? one of the reasons why I don't want it.

why the fuck are people still buying anything under 1920x1080?

Maybe because the require less power.

For around $200, could I get a Thinkpad that would let me program, have around 10 tabs open in a brower, and all the other basic things people do with a computer? If so, which model? I don't have any strong preference, I just need something cheap that gets the job done without any annoying features.

Also, how long are the batteries supposed to last on a Thinkpad?

My t61 keeps me happy, I don't even use my desktop anymore.
1440x900 screen, 2.8ghz dualcore, half-decent gpu
>>

Hopshopgo.
>>
>>43302878
X200/s T400.

Can usually get a 2.4ghz with 2/4gb ram for 100 or less, then spend the rest on ssd or moar ram. You can also get a hdd caddy to stick your original hard disk in the DVD slot for the T400.

If i get an x220 can I use my s pen with it (s pen from a gnote 3)
>>
>>43303747
No, it's just a stylus.
>>
>>43303903
capacitive? thats horrible
>>
>>43303747
Yes, the S-pen works just fine on the X220. They both use Wacom Penabled digitizers.
