OFFICIAL /G/ RETRO COMPUTING THREAD

This is a blue board which means that it's for everybody (Safe For Work content only). If you see any adult content, please report it.

Thread replies: 274

Welcomed: All PCs pre-Windows XP, classic Macs, Amigas, 8-bit computers
Not welcome: Tripfags, nostalgia shitposting, asking for help running games on emulation (you have /vr/ for that), post-2000 hardware and OSes

Yeah, you can. I procured a box at the same time I got the printer, but I'm totally drawing a blank as to where I bought it. I THINK I had to order it online from Amazon, but it was a huge box that'll probably last me several years.
In any case, the ImageWriter uses regular 8 1/2 x 11 paper (which actually tends to be listed as "9 x 11" or something like that because it includes the feeder holes on both sides that you tear off after printing), which was pretty much the "standard issue" dot-matrix printer paper, so while you'll have to pay more today than back in the day since there's less of it being produced, it's still out there, at least for now.
(Also, like modern printers, you can adjust the guides to take thinner paper widths, like if you wanted to print postcards or something, but 8.5/9 is about as wide as it can handle.)

Welcome: Windows 1.x-3.x/9x/NT, MS/PC-DOS, OS/2, Classic Mac OS 1-9, Amiga, 8-bit home systems, CP/M, Legacy Unix platforms, anything pre-1999 you can possibly think of

Tolerated: Windows 2000, Windows Me, OS X on PowerPC systems, GNU/Linux (relating to retro hardware)

Tolerated, but discouraged: Retro consoles (there's /vr/ for that guys), DOS game emulation (/vr/)

pls go: XP, OS X on Intel systems

Use a variant of this next time. We get questions like >>43266286 every fucking time because you niggers randomly exclude platforms because of some inane autism

> As I said, I'm pretty sure most
> common inkjet/laser paper will

> paper because it's too slick.

It'll work, but there's two problems:

1) You have to feed it one page at a time. It's a massive pain in the ass to print page 1, have everything grind to a halt, insert one sheet of paper and print page 2, etc.

2) The ImageWriter II feeder doesn't work all that well. Half the time it feeds the paper in a bit sideways and then starts printing at a 20-degree angle before you can even hit the pause button, or pulls the sheet in too far and then ends up printing off the bottom of the page, shit like that. Apple made a big bulky sheet feeder that you could insert on top of the printer that would allow it to actually handle a few dozen sheets of paper at a time like today's printers, but it was rather expensive so I never owned one, and as I recall it wasn't exactly known for its reliability either.
>>
>>43266476

I actually got this printer for my Mac Plus, so I'm all set.

Came into the shop with another Mac Plus (the one it was originally attached to) but I passed on it since I already have a decently loaded one.

>>
>>43266476
>>43266449
> You need an adapter to connect

Oh yeah, I forgot about that part. I had to buy an adapter to make it work with a modern Mac, and also, no recent version of OS X comes with ImageWriter drivers, so you have to hack it to make it work, and even then the print quality isn't quite what you used to get back in the day. I'm planning on eventually pulling either my G4 lampshade iMac or G3 Bondi iMac out of the closet and just using the ImageWriter with it.
>>
>>43266532

there's no other place to discuss it, and shit from the post-1994 era is a fantastic introduction to retrocomputing and it's where a lot of people start.

if we cut off anything post-1994 this thread would be full of '80s magazine ads and 8-bits that everyone already knows shit about because not a lot of /g/ owns the interesting stuff from that period

just stop being mad and enjoy the ride
>>
>>43266430
THIS.

If you want to add systems, that's fine (so long as it's just more detail, such as expanding "8 bit systems" to "8 bit systems (Commodore 64, Sinclair ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC) But stop cutting down the copypasta. It benefits nobody.

Why do people keep cutting down the OP?
I'd understand if this one just cutpasted the OP from the last thread, but this one has managed to be even shorter and more exclusive.

It doesn't even look good to have a short OP, it makes the threads look like they're just throwaway, poorly thought out posts (lending itself to looking like nostalgia shitposting), rather than something that's been running for a while.

pretty much

kek, I went into the Nekochan IRC once and tried to make idle conversation in a discussion about sun hardware and got BTFO because I asked some misc. low-effort question about post-sun SPARC systems that apparently rustled their autism or something

it kind of made me want to dump my SGI hardware off, since if you're running anything older than an R10K indigo you're pretty much hopeless since nobody will help you with the basics without being condescending assholes and they won't really help you find software for older systems unless you know people

Still looking for the HP OmniBook 300/430 after a few years, still not one found.

Made by the legendary HP calculator division, it was super durable, came with a 386SLC or 486SLC, ran off PC Card Storage and up to 8-9 hours battery life from 4 AA batteries. In comparison the 3 year older GameBoy ran for 15 hours on 4 AA batteries, it's amazing how power efficient this damn laptop is.

That's a Mac XL rather than a "true" Lisa, it was just showing the external look of the system.

For on-screen stuff, a better example would be pic-related. It's just nice to look at, so close to the Mac style while still noticeably different.
>>
>>43268440

It looked and felt a lot more like a professional system than the early Macintoshes, and in many ways it was.
>>
>>43269247
It's easy to tell the difference.
The Mac had square pixels, the Lisa didn't.
So Mac display elements on the Lisa were distorted.

Most of them are named after characters from swan lake. My two main desktops are named odile and odette. My VPS is named rothbart. I'm planning a server, but I feel that is a bit of a waste since my main video game pc already does that. I'd name the server siegfried probably.

Been thinking about changing to a different naming scheme. I don't feel like Swan Lake have enough characters to name my stuff after. Touhou or Aria maybe.

Video games. Lots of old games that need win9x. Stuff that can be a bit of a hassle to run on a current core iX system with windows 7/8.

That Pentium 3 can still be too fast for earlier 9x and ms-dos era games. I have a couple that plays a lot better on a Pentium or through Dosbox.

Welcome: Windows 1.x-3.x/9x/NT, MS/PC-DOS, OS/2, Classic Mac OS 1-9, Amiga, 8-bit home systems, CP/M, Legacy Unix platforms, anything pre-1999 you can possibly think of

Tolerated: Windows 2000, Windows Me, OS X on PowerPC systems, GNU/Linux (relating to retro hardware)

Tolerated, but discouraged: Retro consoles (there's /vr/ for that guys), DOS game emulation (/vr/)

pls go: XP, OS X on Intel systems

IRC: #/g/retro on irc.rizon.net

Consideration, should we remove "Tolerated, but discouraged" as a section?. I'm not strongly for the idea, nor against it, it just came to mind.

A consideration would be to modify it to emphasise Retro-console hardware (as the story of all the chips in the SNES, cool programming tricks on the 2600, etc, could be interesting.) over "I have a pac-man cartridge, lol that port sucked".

I mean it's harmless to keep since I don't remember a single console post anyway. Just a consideration.

Well you bought them together. My parents bought me a C64C and 1541C together.

The Brits were obsessed with tape drives and used them long after they were considered obsolete. I had a Datasette for a VIC20 but never used after I got the 64 and I don't ever remember even seeing 64/128 software on cassette in the US.

Couldn't you hook stuff up to a CD32 to turn it into a pseudo-amiga? Maybe I'm thinking of something else.

Speaking of The Deathbed Vigil, it was quite sad with hindsight hearing people saying they'd be moving on to work at 3DO, given how that flopped as well.

Yes, it was pretty much an Amiga 1200. Apparently there were third party hard drives, keyboards, etc.

I believe it was also the first 32 bit console, but I'm not positive. I was also one of the 4 people that bought a 3DO.

Ignore these faggots, there is no "official" thread for anything because this is an anonymous image board. The closest thing to being official is being a semi-permanent thread. These retro threads have become semi-permanent, just like daily programming, desktop, homescreen, stupid questions, and guts threads, but the difference is that the retro threads are of higher quality, and they entertain and inform me about older computers and software. Quit fighting over the OP pasta, who cares? Everyone has their own definition of retro, if they are so underage that they think XP SP2 is retro, then they do not belong here. What happened to /retro/ being a no-bullying zone? I thought these threads were more civil than the rest of /g/ with its "Install Gentoo" and "Windows users belong on /v/" bullshit.

That was before my microcomputing time. I believe I got the VIC20 used from a classmate around 86 or so, and the 64 in 87 or 88. Pic related is the only commercial software I ever had on Datasette. It was actually kind of cool, educational games, mostly about programming. The fucking load times were ridiculous for a kid with ADHD though.

The reason changing the OP pasta matters is because the changes made are negative. They are harmful changes.

Sometimes, it's done without ill intent, other times (and this is the most problematic) people do it because they have a dislike for a system.
If someone makes an OP post, but specifically leaves out the Amiga and 8-bit-systems because they sperg against Commodore, someone should point out that OP is being a faggot and any hiding Commodore users can feel safe.

If you don't like systems being omitted, then just say all systems made up to the year 2000 are welcome. That way there is zero confusion and no systems are being left out. I don't see any reason to leave any specific hardware or OS out of it. Also I think there should be tolerance to some game-related content if it is being played on an old system and the game is also retro.
>>
>>43279411
"All systems up to the year 2000" works in shortform. I like it. The risk is people who'll come in and make a fuss about windows-98 and similar.
I also agree that game content should be tolerated. (and would be interested in seeing more console-hardware discussion.)

I think a longform OP carries more sort of "air of respect" to discourage shitposting, but I've no evidence for that. I'd not be upset if someone just said "Anything up to 2000" as their OP, though near the end of that thread or when making a future one I would give consideration to posting the longer version.

My aim is simply to be as inclusive as possible without harming the thread.

Anyway, one thing I've noted these threads have lacked - retro Soviet/Russian microcomputers! I'd have thought someone on /g/ would have come into contact with one. (I haven't).

Soviet Apple 2 clone
Isn't it cool looking?

>BYTE in November 1984 called Agat "a bad copy of the Apple". While stating "my overall impressions were favorable, considering the source", the reviewer found that "the operating system and ROM seemed to be a direct lift from the Apple", the internals were a "nightmarish wire maze", and that performance was noticeably slower than that of a real Apple. He reported that ELORG planned to sell the computer for $17,000, and that its officials were "shocked" when told how much computing power that amount of money would purchase in the United States.

The Model I at least definitely had a lot of cut corners to keep its retail price down. Critics complained about everything from the quality of the video display (essentially a hacked-up RCA TV) to the lack of a data separator in the floppy controller, which made disk access not very reliable.
>>

I've read it produced so much radio interference you could use it to provide sound for your games if you had a radio.

If true, that's absolutely brilliant.

This was normal for most early microcomputers until 1981 when the FCC began requiring them to have RF shielding, also the main reason for the Model I's discontinuation (it would have been too expensive to modify it to comply with said regulations)

Planet 'Killer Whale' in constellation of Tau Ceti is the same size as the Earth, and consists of an incompressible liquid substance whose density is 800 kg/m3. Length of a day on this planet is 10 hours. North Pole is oriented towards the Earth. One night the inhabitant of the planet whale "Whale" floated to the surface in the Northern hemisphere at latitude 56 °, to admire the starry sky. Find the angle between the horizon at the point where Vale has surfaced, and the direction to the Earth (its average density of 5500 kg/m3, the radius of 6400 km). Throughout the constellation of Tau Ceti latitude point is the angle between the radius drawn to it from the center of the planet, and the plane of the equator. I was given a Windows NT 4 disk after a friend's father had upgraded his computers for Windows 2000 and didn't need them anymore so like the poorfag teenager I was used it religiously until I could get a more modern desktop. Ever since experiencing how stable it was I never found a reason to go back to the 9x line as NT was able to handle the programs I used on it despite half of it being DOS-based.

FS 2002 needs a 233Mhz CPU and 32MB of video memory. It also requires a 3D card while the older versions do not.

Thanks. I've seen the first link and tried to download some applications from there in the past. I've also tried some stuff form piratebay but there's far too few.

The Professional Edition does, the basic edition doesn't.

The HP Brio was a small form factor desktop aimed at the casual computer market. It usually came with an Intel Celeron and the bare minimum of memory. All it was good for was using Office (Word processing, spreadsheets, ect), e-mail/internet, light gaming and anything of the sort.

The model I had specifically was a BA400. If I recall correctly it used a Celeron 500 and had 64MB of RAM (Which I upgraded to 256MB when PC66 RAM dropped heavily in price) and a 10GB HDD. Despite it's limitations I loved using it and had no problems whatsoever (Thanks to NT 4). I will get it out when I have the time tomorrow. It's hard to find good pictures of it so here is what I could find.

I'm trying to restore two Powerbook 150s but from the look of it Apple decided to get cheap on the hinges as they dried out very easily and I'm having a real hard time getting them lose again. Sadly both of them have dead pixels on over an 1/8th of the screen.

windows 98 or 95? which has a better aesthetic?

Aesthetically they are literally the same, except Win95 explorer without updates is annoying as shit when you're used to newer versions.

Is there a collector's market for retro computer parts? I have a Western Digital Caviar 2250 256 MB hard drive and there's people paying upwards of $200 for this outdated drive. How do I know if mine's worth anything? And how would I go about finding someone who'll pay me that much for one.

garbage, it probably uses SDRAM
at least the optiplexes have AGP

If it still works and has minimal dead sectors (preferably none) then it's worth big bucks.

What can i do with a compaq presario 1255?

I play old games like Quake1, Doom, Mech Warrior, etc etc.

I think I prefer Windows 95. Spatial file managers are pretty damn sexy. The "everything is the internet" aspect of Windows 98 ruins it for me.

That's what I'd do with it. Looks like the k6-2 cpus are pretty compatible when it comes to game. It can be underclocked easily, so they have great compatibility with older speed sensitive games. Quake and Doom have no trouble with fast computers tho.

Should be decent enough for later Win9x games too.

I like small, pre-1996 computers. Any ones that I should look into that aren't prohibitively expensive from an European PoV?

The Windows 3.x GDI was too limiting and never really intended for gaming.
>>
>>43293972
In the latter part of the Windows 3.x era (94-95), 256-color support was becoming the norm. Some software like Photoshop could even use 16 million colors.

Also produced in an 8086 and a 386 model. These had dual-scan CGA displays (from a programming standpoint, it's 640x200, but the extra scanlines are filled in to "increase" vertical resolution)
>>
>>43294588
The 386 model has problems running Windows in Enhanced Mode because the CGA driver doesn't get along with that dual-scan display.

I looked up these things on a whim.

They're like 10 bucks on eBay now.

I still remember lusting over spending a grand on one, imagining how awesome it would be to up my sad old 500mhz P3 rig to 1.4ghz or more.

Although I'm sort of glad I didn't spend the shitload of money now lol

I don't even have the P3 box anymore but now I kind of want to just buy one and frame it or something...
>>
>>43295358
All that money spent on a thumping 800Mhz CPU so you could run the local bank's COBOL accounting software from 1985.
>>
>>43295358
What is the advantage? Wouldn't a socket 370 mobo + cpu be the same price or cheaper than futzing with a slot 1 mobo?
>>
>>43295475
You can even still run that shit on 64-bit motherboards.

After you've dumped money on a Slot 1 board + CPU? nooooope
