If you're doing any sort of serious work on your computer that would require that much horsepower, you should buy a laptop and use the rest on a renderfarm.

Because I don't need it, nor do I want it.

I am a fan of the improved airflow, and I would love to see a PC case take advantage of something similar while maintaining the focus on standardized technology formats. But as it is now, I really REALLY don't care.

There are much better cards, especially for the applications Macs are used for, that would be much more fitting.
You could build a $3000 Hackintosh that would blow this thing out of the water.
>>
>>43192762
>>43192816
I'm not defending the Trashcan by any means, I think the design was alright but very poorly executed. There is no way that central common sink could dissipate a worst case (What it SHOULD BE used for) scenario and come out with happy temps.
I'm simply saying that to compare between a workstation card and mainstream gaming card are really two different areas of proficiency.
>>
>>43192826
About as powerful too.
>>
I've always wanted to buy a $3k trashcan facebook machine
>>
>>43192853

That's what I was saying as well. I actually like the old Mac Pro, this one just completely misses the point. I really hope nobody buys it and forces them to go back to the drawing board.
>>
How about we have generals for Windows, Mac OS, and GNU/Linux and anyone who starts a thread related to any of these things while there's already a thread will get banned?
>>
These things use Xeons. Do you even need a Xeon for the kind of work this thing was made for?
>>
>>43192428

Because heterosexual.
>>
>>43192877
You cannot seriously be implying the possibility of people not buying this. It's Apple. It could literally be a trashcan with an outdated motherboard and people would still buy it for $3000. They'd call it a bargain, and the most appropriate machine they could have purchased for the job.

Oh wait...
>>
>>43192853
>I'm simply saying that to compare between a workstation card and mainstream gaming card are really two different areas of proficiency.
And what I'm saying is that it's not a workstation card in any meaningful measure.
>No ECC RAM
>Doesn't use workstation drivers
>Don't support 10 bit color
The D700 is a severely downclocked 7970 using Apple drivers.
>>
>>43192899

Then this board would die because it's literally 85% shitposting about any of those three.
>>
>>43192905

If it's CPU-heavy rendering then very much so.
>>
>>43192877
>I really hope nobody buys it and forces them to go back to the drawing board.
How will somebody buying it force them back to the drawing board?
>>
>>43192905
A Xenon helps, but it's not necessary.
That's really the least of this thing's shortcomings.
>>
>>43192918

http://www.prweb.com/releases/2013/11/prweb11318177.htm

don't really have a lot of other links, but it seems to have pissed off some people who actually bought them as workstations since it's the same price as the old one but to expand or customize it you need to spend an extra $300-$500 on top of that
>>
>>43192947
Wait... they bought a Mac and got upset because there's a $0.5k pricetag on upgrading?

Are they for real? They willingly dug their grave, they can't complain about it.
>>
>>43192942

nobody buys it and IT (the act of nobody buying it) forces them to go back to the drawing board

I know it's a pipe dream, but still, I miss that old case.

>>43192972

Considering the old ones had onboard PCIe expansion and drive bays, yeah, I would be pretty pissed off too if the next model I had hoped to buy was instead gimped for the "space saver" yuppie/hipster crowd.

Workstations are always overpriced, the Pro a little more.
>>
I already have a trashcan in my house, it's made of plastic and works great.

many review sites did tests on its "improved, unique airflow" that showed it isn't adequate enough to run both the cpu and gpu at max speeds maxed out at the same time. it ends up downclocking its self to stay within safe temps. unlike the previous mac pros that used regular cases and cooling systems that allowed for both cpu and gpu to be maxed out at max speeds perfectly fine.

the trashcan fan system is all for looks and nothing more.

I think it's weird they built a machine for "video pros" which can't use any nVidia cards.

It's like saying fuck your nVidia ecosystem, you're going with AMD and that's it.

If it's not upgradeable and doesnt support other video cards, how is this system supposed to be pro? It's more like for a new generation of hipster "pros" who will appreciate "the design" but won't mind whatever Apple rams down their throats.

>Why would you get the two if you don't need them?

I need a decently powerful computer and I also need a laptop.

So I either meet both of these needs with a single powerful laptop, or I have to get separate devices for each need.

Only a Jew would have me choose the latter option.
>>
>>43193738
Or you would go for the correct answer and go for the latter because a powerful laptop is still shit as far as desktops go.

>>
>>43193738
Are you going to just get an expensive laptop every time you come to this great decision?
Last I checked, you pretty much have to run most high end laptops into the ground.
>>
Because for the ten thousandth time something far stronger can be made for the same price. Those d300/500s don't even do 10 bit which makes them useless as workstation cards and honestly a 4 core xeon is not as good as modern i7s due to the fact that the huge increase in clock speeds make up for the smaller cache. Ecc ram is not going to help as much as you might think with the applications that most are going to run with this anyways. Might as well just use a normal desktop...

Worst workstation I've ever seen.

>>
>So why haven't you wasted your money on a computer that costs as much as a decent used car or a potentially useful investment?

Probably because anyone who really needs that power has access to a mainframe owned by their employer or university, and anyone who wants and can actually use a mainframe at home will build/buy something more specialized and more powerful for its purpose themselves instead of a souped up general purpose workstation shoved into a trashcan with little room for extensibility.
>>
>>43193887

Depends on the gaming GPU. The GTX 880M in my laptop is around a GTX 760 in terms of performance.

Two generations ago for Nvidia would be the 500 series, so you'd have to go with the GTX 590 to surpass that.

I don't think the desktop 8000 series was ever released by AMD, so you'd have to go back to the 6990 to surpass it.

In either case, you have to used multiple desktop GPUs from two generations ago to equal or surpass the single mobile GPU I have.

My laptop has better battery life at a smaller size than a desktop of equivalent performance would, yet it has better performance than a smaller laptop with better battery life would; therefore I get the benefits of having a decent amount of power while also having a decent degree of portability.

Sure, "decent" wouldn't do if I said I needed "the most powerful computer I can get" and "the smallest laptop with the best battery life". But since I said "I need a decently powerful computer and I also need a laptop", it's the best option.

The base board is circular.
The daughter boards aren't curved because that's a fucking retarded idea, and each has other boards such as SSD, RAM and IO board between them and the side of the enclosure.

08 Mac Pro owner here with GTX 680 Mac Edition.

Used to build PCs, but I lost all patience with Windows and switched. This has been the finest machine I've ever owned and, despite the cost, has been worth every penny to me in the end. I never really fully appreciated OSX until I run bootcamp (Win 7) for my Steam games. Even though I only have it setup just to run games and firefox (for game cheats), Windows still has issues every now and then.

Now, having said that, even though I could buy the new Mac Pro tomorrow and it would only dent my savings a bit, I would NEVER buy this fucking thing.

Take my advice, get the fastest Mac Mini you can afford, get 3rd part memory and max it out, and either build your own PC for games or buy one all ready assembled. For about $1000, you can have the best of both worlds. PC for Steam games, OSX for everything else

It's also massive in all dimensions and weighs more than HP's 2U servers.

Americans suck at manufacturing.

Forgive my ignorance, but relatively speaking, has weight ever been an issue with servers?
Anything above 20kg technically needs to handled by two people, anyway.

No it usually doesn't matter. I just find it intriguing that a maxed out DL380 weighs slightly less at 26kg than a typical Z820; nothing profound behind it.

Thanks, I know fuck all about them so I couldn't figure out why it was noteworthy.

Anyone have a document detailing the advantages of a cylindrical shape for airflow?

Really? You probably should have bought a $1000 one.
