My x200 was LED, so this is a downgrade to CCFL, I had to buy a new inverter and cable to make it fit.
If your x200 is CCFL it's a direct drop in.

Total cost was 40 dollars for the screen and extra parts.

Not that it's any of my business, but any particular reason? I know they're shipped with it and all but it doesn't work terribly well with them. You have to install many Lenovo software packages just to have basic stuff like touchpad scrolling. And two-finger scrolling doesn't seem to be possible at all (that was actually the dealbreaker for me).

Intel's Windows GPU drivers are pretty bad too... I guess maybe you have a model with dedicated/switchable GPU and you want to play some games that are too fiddly in WINE? Or something. Just kinda scratching my head here, it seems like an uphill battle for little gain.

Package manager is the big one for me. I always feel reluctant to install things on Windows because I know that if I don't like it, removing it will still leave traces everywhere.

I didn't need to install any drivers at all on Mint. I installed TLP by pasting a few lines from a website, and I don't actually know whether it was necessary anyway.

Are you in opposite land? It took literally hours of downloading and installing stuff for Win7 to stop showing exclamation marks. Meanwhile Mint was justwerks. Seriously, with the possible exception of TLP, I didn't need to install or configure anything.

Windows needed several long reset cycles to apply updates, some of which failed and had to be retried. Linux just did all of them live and everything took effect either immediately or at next boot (which takes no longer than any other boot).

I consider that an important feature. Another one is two-finger scroll. Linux: Google it, copy-paste the command and press enter, done. Windows: You can't, deal with it.

Okay, now I know for a fact you haven't used Linux except maybe a quick liveCD test. The opposite is true. Everything is updated together. When you get told that x updates are available and press install, it updates not just the system but ALL your software, at the same time. You never have to hunt down updates manually, ever. You never need to reboot. Sometimes a couple of updates don't take effect until you do, but it doesn't nag you and the reboot is just a normal one. This is the #1 reason I use Linux.

I've been using Linux for about 3 years now, and I'm competent enough at it to get things to work. I'm just sick of jumping through hoops and installing obscure software to deal with shit.
For example:
- Compatibility with other devices and formats is shoddy at best, and I find myself having to put way more effort in than I should have to when it comes to proper file transfer
- Lack of proprietary software like Photoshop and MS Office is a massive annoyance. GIMP is a decent alternative but they really need to get their heads out of their asses and not have export/save as separate. It's a relatively minor nitpick but it's a pain in the ass, especially considering how easy it is with photoshop. Also, having to make sure things convert properly between Writer to Word and Impress to Powerpoint etc. is a pain.
- Battery life is rubbish with Linux
- Having to rely on WINE for basic shit is all kinds of crap
Now, I know all of these are common complaints. You've probably heard them a good bit before me, and to be completely honest, every OS has its bullshit about it (once I learned how to make it less bullshitty, Snow Leopard was probably the closest OS I found to perfection back when I had a macbook, but OS X got worse after every single fucking update and I fucked up and screwed up the computer) but I think I might want to give making Windows manageable a shot. I've pulled it off with Mac OS and Linux to a certain extent, I'm sure Windows can't be too hard.

Screen is a HV121WX4-110, there are different models, some matte, some glossy, some with digitizers and some without.

The screen I specified is a matte with digitizer, but when you remove the digitizer it's a glossy panel underneath.

Another note on that, you can buy the models that have digitizers and remove them with a razor blade, just be careful not to scratch the screen when doing so, the one I used has the digitizer, just carefully remove it or buy one without one.

I picked with one because it was a smoking deal on it and removing the thing is a piece of cake, here's a pic of the bare panel after cutting the glass touch panel off.

So I was looking to upgrade my old X201 and decided to go to my local computer shop to try out the updated Thinkpads. Aside from a couple issues with the new keyboard -- i.e. F-key placement not grouped -- the keys themselves felt fantastic. Not better than my past Thinkpads but pretty much felt the same. The bodies on the models I tried seemed sturdy and well built, barring the X1 Carbon that had a flimsy feel. Real talk, do you find the new models that shitty? They seemed okay to me, and I've been contemplating buying an X240 or a T540p.

hey guys i bought a T43 without a hard drive, but upon googling it seems a lot of people have "2010" errors where the bios doesn't like aftermarket drives.

my questions:

from what it looks like, the bios just says "this drive might not work" when booting, and you can just skip the message and it will work fine. is this correct?

if this isn't correct, could i just get a hard drive caddy for the optical drive and use that as my main hdd without any issues?

I'm looking for a small Thinkpad to buy, I have a T400 and a base 2011 MBA. The Thinkpad was great to use, but it was really bulky and not great to carry around in my bag at uni. I pretty much switch to using the MBA almost exclusively since it was thin, light, fast, and had miniDP so I could watch chinese cartoons on my TV.

However, since it's the base Air, it only has a 64GB SSD which is nothing. At least with a Thinkpad I could swap out the HDD and RAM as I see fit.

Would an X220 be similar to the Air in lightness and portability? That's my strongest candidate right now for a new laptop that has expandable storage and memory. Oh, and I can get an IPS panel with it too, since the Air's display is absolutely terrible.

X60/X61 and T60/61 were the last 4:3 aspect ratio Thinkpads.

X201 and T400/500 were the last 16:10 aspect ratio Thinkpads.

X220 and T420/520 were the last Thinkpads with Thinkpad keyboards.

I have a T42 and a G40. I thought the T42 was broken but it's not, so I stopped using the G40. The G40 had a P4 @ 2.40 GHz and the T42 has a Pentium M @ 1.70 GHz. Some CPU benchmark website said the M was faster and I believed them.

I hardly care anyway, the G40 is in bad condition - no down arrow key (you can still press the contact and it works) and no Trackpoint nub. And the thing is humongous and heavy. The T42 is basically pristine.

I run casual babby mode Linux on them.

The G40 has Linux Mint 13 Xfce. I tried a number of OSs on the T42, like Puppy, Mint, and CentOS, but I settled on Lubuntu 14.04. It seems pretty fast - faster than Mint on my G40. I still have Firefox on the T42 but I also have NetSurf. I was very impressed with how fast NetSurf is. I wish it had Javascript support, but the memory usage is great. 512 MB is not much. Firefox chokes after a few tabs and has to use swap.

I would've tried CentOS but 6.x and 7.x don't support PAE forcing and CentOS 5.x doesn't have a kernel with the wifi drivers I need. Not worth the time to *maybe* come up with a fix. Lubuntu works immediately upon install.

Anyone with a X201 with wireless card issues? Apparently the model has issues with a faulty wireless card.

For a while now whenever it was undocked, the wireless card would just turn off randomly and the only way I could get it back working was to reboot.

Today, while docked the laptop decided to shut down randomly. I turned it back on, wireless card not working and the adapter wasn't showing up on device manager.

So I downloaded the driver from the lenovo website and got it working again, dunno how long it will last though.

Guess what, the supply is getting thin.
First because they are oldish, second because /g/thinkpad is snatching them all. Some people here buy them for refurbishing. Key to get low prices is to lurk eBay for improperly listed units and to frontrun the /g/entoomen.
Unless you have a specific reason (build a frankenpad with the 15" 4:3 panel, or the offcentered display drives you mad) I'd suggest a T61 with Intel video instead. SATA2 is available if you install the Middleton BIOS, and you can install 8GB of RAM instead of the 3GB on a T60.
You shouldn't buy a T61 with nVidia graphics because the units made before aug2008 are defective, and will fail. Manufacturing date of the laptop is not enough to tell; some units were made with older chips. You must remove the heatsink and check the chip directly to be sure. TL;DR go for Intel video.
If you get a T61 with loose hinges, look the FRUs for the Kato ones in the Hardware Maintenance Manual, they don't have this problem. You might want to get them preemptively.

I have posted this before but I'll try again: approx. 5 days ago I bought an -almost- new ThinkPad x200. The BIOS had a supervisor password on it.

I opened the thing up, shortened out the SDA & SCL pins on the EEPROM chip. It skipped me straight to BIOS, without using a password, but options were still greyed out (couldn't edit them). I tried another method (from AllService.ro forum). Basically it involves building a small electrical circuit and hooking the EEPROM to a serial port.

I was able to dump my BIOS binary file but the password was not visible on the designated address. (because my bios is TCPA encrypted).

Now this forum called AllService is offering a service to unlock TCPA encrypted BIOSes. They modify your binary file with the password, and you'll have to cook it back. Because I don't want to spend 40 euros on that shit I want to try to do it myself. It seems quite logical.

I have found the hex address where the password resides. I am thinking about wiping it out and replacing it with 0's, then cooking it back to the BIOS. One of my concerns is the checksum of the binary file, and how the beast is gonna handle it.

Has anyone been through the same situation as me? I'd like some more information about the process because I'll probably end up bricking.

You can remove the Lenovo branding from a T61.
Stickers for the LCD panel cover and the palmrest, with IBM logos, are available on eBay.
That thing below the panel, with the lights, is a plastic strip with glue. You can find them on eBay too, with or without "lenovo" written on them. The ones without lenovo are harder to find, always ask the seller if they really are without it, *or*, mod one to remove the lenovo logo.
To remove it, take the strip out of the paper where it comes. The printing is on the back of the strip. Remove the glue only from the part where the logo is. After that, carefully, use a small file to remove it. The filed off part will become transparent; use China ink to paint it again. Then replace the strip in your laptop, and you are done.

You may have noticed the gray function keys. Those were taken off from a T4x keyboard. This can be done easily on NMB keyboards. They are a direct swap, *if* you transplant the whole key assembly (the scissors and the "C" piece. You don't need to swap the rubber cups). This can also be done with Chicony keyboards, but is is much harder, you need to bend the key holding clips so that the larger T4x scissors can fit (Chicony keyboards don't use the C pieces). If you also want to replace Caps Lock on a Chicony, it will need light filing to fit. If you want to do this, be sure that you have a NMB keyboard. The easiest way to do this is to buy both, T4x and T6x keyboards, remembering to get the NMB variant. All keys can be swapped, in case you fancy the Caps Lock and the bolder lettering of the T4x (again, remember to swap the scissors *and* the C piece. You can install a 64bit CPU on a T60. You will be limited to 3GB, but you will have support for 64bit software and VT-x.
The best CPU compatible with a T60 is the T7600 SL9SD (2.33GHz, cpumark 1286, 64bit, VTx). Many T60 units come with a T2400 (1.83GHz, cpumark 785, 32bit, VTx). If you have one of those, you might want to upgrade, the T7600 is 50% faster. Many people prefer the T60 over the T61 because of the open source ATI drivers available for *nix. Intel drivers are actually better, but if you *need* 3D, you should go for ATI. The closed binary nVidia drivers (available for Linux and FreeBSD) are excellent and give you some GL extensions that never will be on the free drivers because they are patented, but many people don't want those drivers, because freedoms.

There are no netbook sized models that /g/ would approve (mayhaps that thing given away to Australian students). I would recommend the X201, non tablet version.

You can install a X200 palmrest without UltraNav on it if you want to do so, it will fit.

Regarding price, yes, a T61 is cheaper than this and a no-hassle option, and that will give you the delicious 8GB option, as well as faster CPUs. You might want to upgrade the T60 if any of the reasons in >>43077932 apply to you.

Nah, its the right connection and everything and all the bright spots have a scratched texture to them.

Also when I bend the panel or apply pressure very slightly all the lines and colors fuck about.

So, I'm pretty confident its cracked now.

I love my x200, but I plan to upgrade to a better screen, what are chances of finding something better. What are my alternatives?
