Water Filters are Technology. Which water filter do you use, /g/?

I just bought this bad boy. Filtering takes like 20 Seconds until all water ran through and it tastes great. In my region, we have a lot of calcium carbonate in the water, so it always ends up semiwhite.

Pro-tips:

Fluoride (added by municipal water suppliers) will not be filtered by normal carbon filters (e.g., Brita)

Chlorine can be neutralized by letting water sit for 24 hours (depending on it's coverage area), or areating it for at least 6 hours; as it will escape as a gas

Chloramines can be neutralized by mixing an organic compound into the water, which will disengage the chlorine/ammonia bond. How you will then deal with those two is up to you.
>>
>>43034682
... you might live in an area that *has* disgusting water.

I'd usually rather drink the tap water than bottled mineral water, and usually filtering does nothing much (maybe if the house pipes are old... or you need to remove calcium or something for some reason...)

Strict government regulations, water management and nearly 100% of waste water getting treated help, eh.
>>
>>43034782

Yea, that amounts to nothing.

The whole damn world is conducting science, and lots of countries had fluoridation (most of them gave it up since it didn't seem to be provable to work, unlike toothpaste).

It's a reasonable assertion that small traces of fluoride like found in water do basically nothing that adds up to anything noticeable.

Ran out of jugs of filtered water the other day. Too lazy to go out and get more for a few days. Water consumption dropped from like 1 gallon a day to maybe 1 glass because nasty ass tap water. Had to basically get it down to near freezing to make it palatable.
>>
>>43035236 (correction)
I was wrong about saying that it's "not proven to work". There are of course a bunch of studies that show it does help with caries:

http://www.who.int/water_sanitation_health/publications/fluoride_drinking_water/en/

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water_fluoridation_controversy#Efficacy

But it is just too useless as compared to toothpaste + dentists - it's only better than doing nothing, but fluoridation never came close to eliminating caries or other problems. Toothpaste and free dentists OTOH do get a country extremely close.

>>43035410
Whether it works or not should be irrelevant. There are codes of conduct when it comes to medical treatment and involuntary drugging or treatment when the patient is of sound mind has always been considered unethical. You can't just drug people without their informed consent even if it's both in their best interest and that of society at large. In cases like pandemic outbreaks with forced vaccinations or quarantines at gun point that's incomparable to cavities or weak tooth enamel.

If people don't constantly oppose this it will lead to other additives in the water supply thanks to corporate lobbying. That should be their greatest fear and the biggest point raised about this subject as the detrimental effects of fluoride pale in comparison to that.

>>
>>43037691
We arent fish we don't drink salt water
And what about calcium and everything else not in salt?
>>
>>43037752
The salinity of mammalian blood is one third that of seawater and the pH level is in the same range as well. A small amount of salt in your water isn't going to be harmful unless you're already eating a diet with a lot of salt. The main issue with distilled water is that it absorbs carbon dioxide in the air turning it acidic. That is the reason why you should put salt into your distilled water.

>And what about calcium and everything else not in salt?

You get those with a well balanced diet, not through your water.

In the Netherlands legislation prevents any company from putting fluoride in water because the risks outweigh the (unproved) benefits of fluoride.
Fluoride in toothpaste and given by your dentist is enough to prevent tooth decay.
The only people who would benefit of adding fluoride to water are the companies who make money of it.
This law was made before the second world war in the Netherlands. Nowadays a law like that would never pass, because the Jews became too powerful after the second world war.

Well, the being old part is no different for much of Europe.

I'm pretty sure most of german-speaking Europe has prohibited lead pipes from carrying drinking water (and replaced them) for a while now.

The remainder of the EU is limited to 10 ?g/l tops, which does require most longer pipes to be yanked out and replaced in practice.

Same as not safely enclosed asbestos in houses in general... It's both quite dangerous.

>>

Water is wet is common knowledge. Water is clean in NYC is not. You can't prove it is, and if it was you wouldn't have to.
>>

Can't you just vote for decent water treatment plants and pipes at the municipality level?
>>
>>43042225
The point wasn't about whether or not my lake water is properly filtered. I live right next to the water source for my county, and it looks like shit most of the time. I am pleasantly surprised they do as well as they do. I've had water straight from the filtration facility (my dad bought some for like 25 cents a gallon), and it tastes perfectly fine.

I'm just saying, Maine's geology creates one of the best natural filtration systems around and I doubt they worry too much about how well it's filtered by companies.
>>
>>43042110
NYC is one of the biggest, if not, THE biggest city in the world based on land area (not population). There is a decent amount of construction being carried out throughout, so they might be replacing the pipes. The problem is that replacing all the pipes would be expensive.

The two seem contradictory, but NYC does get its water from upstate New York, not the city itself.

Fluoride that is added to drinking water cannot be toxic in the amounts normally used, even if you drink a lot it is diluted enough for your kidneys to handle it and dispose of it properly. However, in some places, there are NATURALLY OCCURRING levels of fluoride that are much higher and can be highly toxic to people drinking it. Intentional fluoridation is not harmful. Also, pic related. The next thread on /g/ is going to be "rate my tinfoil hat".

That doesn't solve the problem of people being poor, and parents being stupid drug addicts and whores. Poverty and drug addiction are not genetic. Besides, what you are suggesting would be an impossible task via tap water. It could be done with bottled water, but people are already paranoid about this kind of scheme, because back in the 90s, black people boycotted a popular drink for supposedly sterilizing blacks. Supposedly it was Pepsi or another soda company that was paying people to spread these rumors. It got really bad, but the black mayor went on TV and drank some and the rumors died down.

The practice of water fluoridation is common knowledge and nobody is forced to drink tap water. That said, fluoride isn't a drug; it's a naturally occurring chemical. There are higher concentrations of fluoride in sea water than any treated drinking water, so maybe you should be protesting fisheries as well?

But finally, the suggestion that corporate lobbyists would want to add other things to water is ridiculous. There is no financial benefit, and the bottom line is always the motivation here. If you can demonstrate how a corporate entity would stand to benefit from spending billions on saturating a national water supply with a chemical cocktail, you'd have a point. Otherwise, you're an idiot, ignorantly parroting ideas that you don't understand even at their most basic.

Holy shit are you really this fucking stupid? Do you think aluminium smelting factories pay out of their own pockets to dump their toxic waste of fluoride into the water supply? They're paid to do so and they're paid well. In the US it costs $1.02 per person per year to the tax payers to have water fluoridation and of course it's promoted as a bargain that saves them money in the long run with the supposed health benefits.

In fact it's only after the Hall–Héroult process of smelting aluminium with sodium fluoride salts was discovered that the factories had PR firms convince the public that they ought to be paid to dump it into their water supplies. Had arsenic been the byproduct of that process we'd probably be arguing over the arsenification of water supplies instead and you'd be just as delusional on the subject.

Interestingly a few people recently died in South Africa and they're blaming the deaths on inexperienced technicians that were hired based on reverse discrimination policies:

>In the newsletter, Kane-Berman was responding to the death of three babies in Bloemhof, North West, due to water contamination caused by a sewage spill. Earlier in June, the SAIRR reportedly blamed affirmative action for the deaths, and said the policy should be scrapped. The institute said black empowerment policies had seen unqualified people appointed to positions where their incompetence affected poor and vulnerable communities.

>“The Bloemhof municipality lost its capacity to maintain the sewer plant,” CEO Frans Cronje was quoted as saying at the time.

>drinking shitty city water straight from the tap
>any year

I wish I were back in the middle of nowhere with well water, tasty, well treated well water. ;-;

I bet the tap water where I live is better than the crap Nestlé is selling all over the world.

I think Ayn Rand could differentiate between figurative and literal.

It's expensive, plastic-wrapped, and pretty much only for convenience. I don't know the specific brand, and can't be anus'd to look it up, because it's bottled water.

Lead is cheap, copper and stainless steel aren't.

However it's mostly old pipes that are made from lead. Nobody uses it anymore, at least here in Europe.

After years of buying 5 galon jugs, and Brita/etc filters, I spent $200 reverse osmosis thing I bought on Amazon. Best money ever spent. The water tastes like premium spring water.

That explains a lot. Everything, really.

top lel. NYC tap water was probably the worst tap water I've had in my whole life.

>NYC has some of the cleanest water retard

who's the retard here?

I'd be cautious to use the jug. I had one, and I think there's just such a thin filter that it hardly does anything. It's also badly shaped, so the water doesn't evenly go through, leaving parts of the filter forever-unused after replacing it.

I live in western Norway. Our tap water is literally Voss water.

OK, so I don't have to watch the life leave her eyes.

you wouldn't have to either way, as she most likely closes her eyes when she sleeps

This city is the third world. It has some of the highest rates of STDs in America and it has the densest population of hispanics in the north east. Crime ridden as fuck too.

>It has some of the highest rates of STDs in America
I don't think they are transmitted via tap water though.

The point is that if she's asleep, her eyes are closed, so I don't have to watch the life leave, whereas if she's awake and facing me, I could watch the life leave her eyes.
Get some sleep, anon. I know I need to.

What i'm getting at is that it's a shitty city, and it has shitty water too. Fuck they did work on the water a few days ago and it's been green tinted since.
