So I need to backup both a Windows system and a Linux system to one external hard drive. My first thought was to have multiple partitions but the required space for each system may change at any time.

Is there either

2) A reliable way to backup an ext4 filesystem to NTFS without losing any metadata?

Is it possible to open up the Wii U Pro controller and mod in the 360's triggers so I can get analogue? Or on the other hand, mod a 360/xbone controller so the sticks are in the same position as the Wii U pro controller? This is for PC use.

As in HUGE and time consuming.

>>43002043
No. Even if you did manage to solder the trigger modules to the board correctly, you'd have to somehow write software to interpret the hardware signals. It would honestly be WAY, WAY easier to mod the core 360 controller internals into the Wii U Pro casing. Now THAT is a solid maybe, and a project worth undertaking.

Yes it will be okay for 4chan if you mainly frequent text-heavy boards like /g/. Not image based boards though. Many sites are way over an MB nowadays though, you will run out fast if you aren't careful.

Consider a browser like Opera Mini which compress everything, and be sure to switch off all sync and update services.

>>
>>43002309
Oh, you really are in the third world. I was kind of expecting you to be in the US where the data plans are apparently horribly capped, and was implying that the US is third world. Okay.

No website seems to agree on what specs that laptop has. One implies that it has 512MiB RAM and yet they shipped Vista on it, holy shit.

Anyway first check that it isn't overheating (use the "sensors" command in a terminal). Then try Lubuntu, Mint MATE, or something else lighter than Cinnamon. You can definitely get a usable Linux desktop on it.

As for using it as a screen, a remote access system over the network is the only way you'll get something like that.

If I could also add another note: I tried many OSes from Vista SP2, Win 7 SP1, Win8.1, eOS, and finishing with Damn small Linux (32 bit for reference, this laptop was available later 64 bit), the problem was mainly with the motherboard + bios.

The hardware works (in other computers surprisingly) but the motherboard had trouble recognizing the hard drive, USB ports, and the bios for god knows what reason fought with me to update. The reason I did an update was because the laptop crashes upon bios post without warning or reasoning

Bitch isn't posting. Pic related.

I plug it in, flip on the power supply, press the big red IO on the motherboard (or the case, same thing)–nothing happens.
The power supply doesn't whir.
The fans don't whir.
No LED. No beep.
The 24-pin is in, the 2x4 CPU is in. Two sticks of RAM. There's not one unconnected cable.

Is it the power supply? If the power supply worked, it would be operating if I turned it on, wouldn't it–even without the motherboard?

disable the touchpad from it's properties and then plug in a usb mouse, it should work normally.

yes they are. a single error means the stick is bad.
now you have to figure out which one (assuming you have 2). remove a stick and start all over again. i usually let it run overnight. then do the other one.
it sucks, but that's life. it's likely only one dimm is bad and not both.

I've seen a few Moto Xs in the price range, but the cell service I'm getting (chit chat mobile) doesn't support it. Actually, on that note, what cheap data plans do you guys recommend? Chit chat mobile is $15/month.

Alternately, can I link a subfolder of a drive mounted to, say, Program Files to Appdata, or does it have to be a separate partition?

I don't think windows lets you shrink partitions after they've been created. If you have space on the dirve that hasn't been put into a new partition you can create one out of that, but otherwise you'll probably have to nuke the partitions on the drive and repartition them.

If you just want to move your appdata folder to another drive you don't need to create its own partition for it. You can create a symbolic link from appdata on C to appdata on D. The appdata on D can be basically anywhere you want on the drive in terms of the folder hierarchy.

to an isp, a vpn is an encrypted tunnel. there is the source ip (you) and whatever the address of the vpn server you're connecting to, and that's it. any data going back and forth is encrypted, so it just looks like gibberish.

>who would willingly transmit all of that data to their ISP?

frankly, no one at your isp really gives a shit what you are doing so long as you pay your bill. the people that do care (nsa, lea, whatever) tap into isp's backbones to target people for surveillance.

fyi if you are the target of that surveillance, your $5 a month hidemyass account isn't going to do shit. while the cryptography still remains mathematically sound, they have demonstrated the ability to exploit the implementations and render it all moot.

if it makes you feel better, that's all that matters
>>
>>43006094
>your $5 a month hidemyass account
I'm running OpenVPN on my Ramnode VPS. I'm not the target of surveillance so I could care less. I primarily use it to hide my static IP.
>>
>>43006083
>wouldn't the vpn still be able to see this info/data?

no. the vpn would see the incoming ip's and the outgoing ip's that you are connecting to, not the traffic itself. if they keep logs, well, that's that.

you are investing a large amount of trust in your vpn provider

>Two 1tb drives in RAID 0 or one 2 tb drive? Is the performance of RAID 0 worth the extra 30 bucks or will the 2 tb drive suffice. just want speed and storage that's worth the money.

Are you sure you don't want any redundancy? 2TB seems like a lot of data to lose if it all goes at once.
>>
>>43007594
Just get an internal 1 tb drive for 55-60 bucks. If you're gonna need to move your data around, settle for a reliable external. The 1 tb versions always go in sale for 60 bucks, like everyday. If you play games then I suggest you go with internal.

Tips on ricing for windows?

How does one even setup RAID? Do you need those RAID controllers or are they just helpful addons? Can any RAID controller do this?
>>
>>43007630
Look up little tutorials about masking and wildcards.

For whatever script you're using, you could just add another entry that specifies that certain parts can be missing or any character, such as periods being whitespace.
>>
>>43007649
Eh it's mostly going to be games. All my media goes onto my external. If anything I can just re-download the games. Is Hdd failure rate even that high?
>>
>>43007630
Pretty sure he's just back spacing the colons and periods m8.
>>
>>43007570
At that cost you could probably just rent server space somewhere with enough quality to install a little web-interface for streaming your media.

Going over the internet to your home, then into your home and hoping it's always on is going to be much slower than what you can get just finding a cheap place to rent a box.

I didn't mean the actual method. I meant writing your script so that it resolves the edited link. >>43007678 has me on the right track.

Motherboards nowadays can setup a RAID for you. I don't think a raid card is necessary unless they offer some type feature or maybe if you have an assload of drives. If you're only gonna have like 5 drives in your system, I see no reason to get a card.
>>
>>43007670
>>43007724
Yeah I've got 7 drives in my server and either the board handles RAID or my server software does, I can't remember.
>>
>>43007670
You won't need anything special to set up your RAID.

If you plan to expand or modify your hard drive setup anytime soon, go with a controller. If you're looking to plan ahead (and for personal purposes are planning small) then you're fine without it since your drives are set.

RAID IS NOT A REDUNDANCY PLAN. This is a big mistake, and I have to put it here just in case you are looking into it for that reason.

To slap into my grandparent's laptop. What I didn't realize at the time, is that it's an original SATA interface. Is it a waste to install it when it's capped at 150mb/s?

All my machines already have SSDs and I got a real good deal on it. (Microcenter had it on sale for $59.99, I had a $10 off coupon, so I payed about $55 for it after taxes)

What do you mean you need an offsite to make things 100% safe?

That's good for ricing but it's pretty outdated.

where exactly could i put an internal on a macbook pro retina? i don't really think i can do that...also I have multiple computers so I feel like an ehdd would be best.

Best way to move about 400 gb between two harddrives. One is going corrupt so I'm looking for the most secure option available

I think he means that being able to remove a drive or two isn't redundancy but efficiency. Yeah, you can keep rolling but it isn't out of security but out of convenience.

If you're doing it for redundancy of data you only have to go so far as imagining some minor electrical internal damage or a surge. That'll fry your board and can easily take out all 6-10 drives without any kind of exaggeration.

On the other hand, just splitting your setup in half gives you a redundancy you can rely on.

There are tons of ways to rig it so you have a safe backup. This doesn't even encounter going so far as offsite, although if you want to get clever, there are some fucking mindblowingly awesome and easy black-friendly offsites you could do that would be untraceable and hidden to anyone but you.

That's probably what I'm going to wind up doing. I'm sure I'm not the only one who orders tech while drunk.

And I suppose in a situation like this one a surge protecting power strip wouldn't be enough?

>there are some fucking mindblowingly awesome and easy black-friendly offsites you could do that would be untraceable and hidden to anyone but you.

If I ask for examples or price ranges you're not going to tell me to google it are you? I'm curious as to how much it would run me to offsite my RAID server.

All the VPS providers I've seen so far don't seem to offer the amount of space I'd require. My home server is 8TB and I've filled up 3 of them already. Am I missing something?

How do I install Debian Sid?

Bonus points: How to do it without a minimal install (might as well use Arch at that point).

I need recommendations for backup software. One thing that's bothered me about every program I've seen so far is that even when files are deleted from the main computer, they remain archived on the backup. I know that the backup tool in Mint has an option of overwriting upon checksum mismatch, something like that would be great.

Also, it needs to be free (gratis) and compatible with Windows 7.

I'm aware that Imgur.com will stop allowing adult images since 15th of May. I'm taking actions to backup as much data as possible.
