I started as a contractor at 20 an hour about 5 months ago, posted amazing stats (contacts per day, time per call etc..) with very little to no bad feedback while constantly updating their knowledge base and making FTE's that been there for years look like shit. The manager for the general service desk pushed to break my contract so they could bring me on as FTE early and I got a 5 dollar an hour pay bump. Before that I was working at 10 an hour at a shittier job doing remote support work for another company (Nerds on Call if you're interested in the business model) I was handling ~8-10 or so live LogMeIn sessions and a phone call so I learned to multi task like a motherfucker. It went to dog shit and my supervisor bailed to the new company we all jumped ship to. I was the first out of all of us to be pulled on FTE. The only job I got out of slight nepotism (it got me the interview) was at a game company at 18. Everything after that was BSing in interviews, and my resume which for a highschool drop out was pretty good.

For an EE I'd say learn to program decently if your school's course of study is weak on it. Learn how to develop with and build on top of real time operating systems. These are areas you are probably weakest in. Embedded is very complex today, so it largely depends on what area you want to be apart of. Do you want to layout boards? Build schematics? Develop drivers and board support code? Develop embedded apps? Every area requires its own kind of expertise. Always keep in mind you are developing something that might be left unattended for over a decade expect to work just as well as it did when it was first powered on.
