Is the creator of Flappy Bird a genius?

With minimal coding he made a game which brings in one years salary per day. He literally did everything right: simple gameplay, cute graphics, fast gameplay which makes a lot of ad views, social media integration for free advertisement

How long until android becomes the 'flash game' dumpsters divers wet dream?
>>
>>40216824
>Is the creator of Flappy Bird a genius?

Pretty much. If I were him I'd just retire after that.
>>
>>40216886
I'd open an indie studio and put away enough money to sustain myself and live a rich baller life no matter what happens to the studio.
>>
>>40216880

Flappy Bird was on iPhone, too.

Simple case of getting lucky, just like Angry Birds.

Luck is a bitch.
>>
>>40216824
>>40216886
Are you fucking retarded? You must be macfags since you clearly like to abuse that word.
That is a simple game to implement. He just had a good idea for a game that could be interesting to play but that doesn't make him a genious in any way ffs.
>>
>>40216886
>If I were him I'd just retire after that.
that's exactly what he did. Crappy bird is no longer on any official app stores.
>>
If he was genius, he would not have copied Nintendo graphics.
>>
I will copy the format with different gameplay.
Just watch.
>>
>>40216930
The guy is still making like 100k a day, and his app is not even in the app store anymore.

That's fucking genius.
>>
>>40216930

It's genius because he made $50k per fucking day.

Come back when you do something that earns you an entire retirement nest egg in 1 week's time.
>>
not a genius

just a very very lucky man
>>
he's vietnamese too so that $50k is probably several years salary and then some
>>
does he continue to make money off it despite pulling it from the stores?
>>
>>40216906

I thought the game was free. Did I miss something?
>>
What would you do with 50 grand a day anon?
>>
I want to make a shameless rip off of it.
if I even make .01% of what he made it would be nice.
>>
>>40217003

He made his money ($50k per day) from ad revenue.

Yes the game is still running on many devices
>>
>>40217025

There are literally dozens. Go into the Android market and search the word "Flappy." Multiple pages of Flappy Bird clones.
>>
>>40217002
yup. it has ads all over it. will be interesting to see if nintendy has any legal claim for his ad revenue under viet law.

i almost feel sorry for the guy, saying his life is ruined. all the people he's ever known will be after his cashmoney especially since vietnam is so poor.
>>
>>40217025
>>40217054
I know.
I wouldn't make anything great, more than likely.
I just kinda of want to do it.
>>
He will be getting sued by Nintendo and Rovio big time.
>>
>>40217100
have rovio copyrighted birds and nintendo pipes? They're not the same sprites
>>
>>40217100
Nintendo said they are not suing or perusing this in fact they are still in denial about mobile games
>>
>>40217004
Invest in bitcoins and finally afford eating pizza every day
>>
>>40216930
>That is a simple game to implement.
Are you autistic? Nobody cares about the coding behind software, it's all about the final product
>>
>>40216930

The game itself is absolute shit. The genius is how he made so much money off a literal trashpile of a game.
>>
>>40217051
>>40217072
ah, i thought that pulling it from the stores might affect how ad revenue is affected.
oh well, good for the brer. he should just move and hire someone to handle publicity etc.

>how ad revenue is distributed*
>>
How would one start an app like this guy?
Is it possible to go it alone?
>>
>>40217176
as far as i can tell it's just adsense popups. I don't think they're tied to the play store at all. although i've never touched android development so I'm not sure.
>>
Is he a genius? Well if you can call boosting your game up to #2 in the Google Play Store download rankings by bots and fake reviews, then yes.

Otherwise, I suspect that he probably realized that the people who run those stores might catch on to him and have his game removed ether way.

So unless the bot boost and fake reviews were done by someone else who charged him a lot for it, he did make quite a lot of money and most people don't have a clue about how he did it.
>>
>>40217223
They aren't. Ads are implemented with an adsense key. The only thing tied to the Play Store, and therefor a Developer Account, is your Merchant Wallet, which equals profits from IAPs and app purchases.
>>
>>40217184
It's clear that they were inspired by SMB, but I don't think copyright laws are shitty enough that you can copyright he concept of green pipes.
>>
>>40217259
Exactly.

I think the most similar style to his is SMW/SMBA2, and when compared to that, it's pretty obvious he copied. He didn't steal, but he copied.
>>
He's just a guy who made a game. Wasn't it released like a year ago or something? Some shitty Let's Player made a video about it and everybody jumped on the wagon. He got lucky.
>>
>>40216824
It's a good game. he was also incredibly lucky it took off.
>>
>he's rich so he must be a genius!
This is what amerifats actually believe.

>>40217259
Maybe not, but literally the only thing more shameless than what he did is using the actual sprites from the games. It's a bit like that Chinese game that used low poly knockoff's of Torchlight assets.
>>
>>40217341
If can call being boosted by bots and paid reviews "lucky"...
>>
>>40217072
>all the people he's ever known will be after his cashmoney
That's not the reason he's having a terrible time. Fucking Americans.

>>
>>40217401
well I guess then he was a genius because most people seem to be unable to set up bots and pay for reviews like he did.
>>
>>40217162
It's accidental. It's not as though he had some expert plan.

>How long until android becomes the 'flash game' dumpsters divers wet dream?

It already is.

Not saying that people that make these games don't deserve some money, but it feels completely out of balance with how much big game developers (the actual developers, not the companies / publishers) make annually.

>>
I just cringe with jealousy when I hear anything about that game.

I will do this some day

And I will do it BECAUSE I HAVE NO SHAME but I also don't have any creativity or artistic skill so whatever
>>
>>40217259
If you think that then you obviously don't understand copyright. The very fact that we ALL know what those pipes look like mean that there is some copyright infringement.

Theyre not just green pipes. They look similar enough to pips in SMB that a connection is made between the two and that overlaps forms association. Only Nintendo has a say in its associations.
>>
>>40217583
you are retarded, we all KNOW it's a pepsi or coke product when it looks like the cans, but because the label isn't shown, they aren't forced to pay royalties
>>
>>40217568
The game gained popularity by accident. Unlike like the Battleblops Ghosts 6 bilgeware you see published by multibillion corporations, which will always be popular by default despite all being awful and identical.

He did nothing. Its shameless copypasta
And probably the reason why he stopped it when it became too big, he was afraid to face legal actions.

>>
>>40217568
>Define Lucky
Well, if we go by Aristotle' definition, "luck" means that something happened by chance, or accidentally, as a result of a conscious effort. I am assuming that the creator of the game did not expect his game to become so popular, and did not work specifically to meet this end. The overwhelming popularity of the game was not his intention, his intention was to make enough money to live comfortably (I assume).
>>
>>40217720
>he was afraid to face legal actions.
>making shit up
the game on the left looks like shit. I bet it feels like shit to play too. The one on the right actually looks polished. I wonder why it did better.
I don't recall angry birds ever being sued by the guys who made castle crashers. I don't remember and game company being sued for copying any other game either unless it explicitly ripped off game code and art assets etc.
