floating windows make me sick. i3 is ok, but you need like 3 or 4 different forked extensions to customize the bar properly. i tried awesome today and it had some good things about it, like static workspaces with notifiers when they're occupied, but it has very strange defaults and i dont know if i want to stick with it long enough to change it all.

https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Comparison_of_tiling_window_managers

what do you nerds use?

i3, i3blocks and i3lock-fancy
Once you have a decent conf file (and some decent blocklets) you don't need that much.
What do you want to put on the bar that you can't do with those three?

xmonad is nice, but I'm not sure about it requiring 1gb of haskell dependencies

Go confirmed for retards
>The key point here is our programmers are Googlers, they’re not researchers. They’re typically, fairly young, fresh out of school, probably learned Java, maybe learned C or C++, probably learned Python. They’re not capable of understanding a brilliant language but we want to use them to build good software. So, the language that we give them has to be easy for them to understand and easy to adopt. -- Rob Pike

Go is pretty neat. You aught to try it Anon. It will only take you two hours to learn it and to begin getting productive with it.

Even if you end up tossing the sodding language soon afterwards, you can still take away some ideas that you can try to apply to your regular programming activities.

Seriously, it takes about 2 hours to get productive in it, and there's isn't a terrible amount to learn.
>>
>>54969873
not really a bad idea.
>>
>>54969873
I don't get it. Is he saying that just because they are right out of school with little knowledge, that instead of letting them learn through experience to just give them an easy language and never challenge them?

Pretty arrogant.

Alright,
We constantly beg for quality threads with quality discussion, so I'll take the initiative and start one.

I'm a moderate linux user. I'm about to install gentoo, and actually customize it this time. I want to know should I use Systemd or OpenRC ?
I know Systemd is significantly faster, but it still gets flamed. Is this just the geizers of IT bitching to stay relevant or is it actually fucked?
18 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
>>54969823
systemd catches flak because it's in the early stages of becoming an operating system
>>
In my experience runit > openrc > anything > systemd. that's in terms of speed too.
>>
I still use SysV, because I'm on Slackware.

Who gives a shit about boot times though, doesn't everyone just use sleep/hibernate these days? I do.

I've never used SystemD, but I really like flat text files running as scripts like V, and apparently D takes a different approach, so I probably won't like it compared to OpenRC.

Maybe you should flip burgers instead.

>>

>>
>>54969796
You don't need a SICK RIG to program. A lot of the guys who are in development are over the allure of such things. In some ways having a SICK RIG BRO actually hinders your ability to get work done because you will spend time tinkering with it instead of doing what you're supposed to be doing.

Also many expensive workstation PCs are quite formidable and can beat your SICK FUGGIN RIG in many benchmarks and end up costing less if you get them on the secondhand market.

I started a web design service in my area because many people need web sites. I got WordPress and bought the Avada theme. So far I've been hired to make 4 websites, but I'm afraid that I actually suck ass and don't know what I'm doing.

Can anybody suggest a book or any online material for learning how to make GOOD websites? I'm not sure if my websites are good, or shitty, and I don't think my customers know either. I want to make sure I really know what I'm doing before I start seriously promoting my service.

Something Linux related. I think it's anti Ubuntu, as they use something called zeitgeist to track what you open so you can find it again. You can turn it off/have to turn it on, and AFAIK it doesn't phone home.
