I just made a complete transition on my main PC from botnet 10 to Mint 17.
What is your opinion on mint or all Linux distributions /g/?
It's cancer
>>55067224
>all I do with my PC is surf the 'net
No one really cares what you use.
>>55067224
Not using mint right now but it's fine. What will you use it for?
I usually lurk on /v/ or /tg/ but you guys know hardware better then the rest of the boards.
I'm planning to do a near-complete pc upgrade soon, and I've got a list of parts here that i'm planning to buy soon and I was wondering your guy's opinion of the list and any recommendations you guys have. Pic is what I'm going from (case for the old PC is a Cosmos 1) I'm planning to keep my old graphics card as a dedicated physics card and having almost the entire rig being water cooled, all in all it's gonna cost me $4500 CAN

If you lurk /v/ you cannot lurk /g/. Your kind is stupid beyond help, and just by taking a look at your "build" I can see that you're a total clueless retard or underage
Start by reading the sticky and lurk more
>>55067388
>no advice whatsoever
>just rage and points at a sticky that says nothing about my question
wow /v/ was right, you guys are just like them
>>55067205
Based on the specs I can kind of tell what your aiming for.
DDR4 isn't worth the extra money imo.
An i7 is probably above your needs (I'd do a 4670k/90k instead and you won't "need ddr4 because intel said so")
Why a gtx 970? If your not doing anything that intensive then aim for a 750ti or go higher than a 970
hello /g/ents, i am using my android phone as my internet connection as i cannot get cable. I was wondering if there was a way for me to port forward and host a website. My carrier is metropcs and unfortunately they block ports that are needed, any way to fix this? or get around?
>turn on my pc
>it flies away
Vps, digital ocean or Something

im wanting to use my phone as the internet access to the computer which i am doing but T-Mobile Blocks incoming ports. i was wanting to know a way around this.

Here's an unsigned 32-bit integer's maximum value (2^32):
4,294,967,295
Pretty pretty easy to visualize, as it's roughly 4.3 billion possible values. And in a retarded bid to help bring some frame-of-reference to it, we could say it's 536.870912 MiB. Or we could say it could address 4,294,967,296 possible bytes, and thus is why 32-bit systems can only address up to about 4 GiB of RAM.
But unsigned 64-bit numbers' possible combinations (pardoning any off-by-one errors I may have in this post), whoa-boy...:
18,446,744,073,709,551,616
That number is fucking huge, and with it you could have a system with up to 16,777,216 Terabytes of RAM that could be addressed.
I don't even know how to begin visualizing that or what I can even compare it to (since I can compare 4 GiB of RAM to the many GiBs of hentai that I have).
Considering how insanely huge 64-bit integers get, especially if they're unsigned, are we ever going to need to get any bigger?
Big numbers thread.
>exponential growth is big
holy shit who would have thought
>>55067085
With Moore's law coming to an end, probably not for a long time, though there probably are some scientific applications that would possibly benefit from an architecture that can process a 128-bit value in one go.
>>55067085
>are we ever going to need to get any bigger?
Yes, because retarted programming will slowly require gazillions of memory.

I'm planning on getting a 1440p monitor 120 to 144hz and maybe a 1440 x 900 monitor to go vertically beside it. Ill be gaymen and programming on this setup. Now I don't know much about monitors and could really use some help to not fall for any memes.
>Are those resolutions a suitable setup?
>Is 144hz a meme or is it worth the money?
>Is lightboost a meme or is it worth getting a compatible monitor?
>Is 27" a meme or should I get 24?
>Is g-sync a meme? (I currently have a 760 and plan on upgrading though I haven't decided AMD or nvidia yet I'm waiting for benchmarks)
>what are BenQ monitors like? They seem to be the cheapest available.
>is 16:9 a meme? I have a terrible 4:3 monitor but prefer viewing things on that than my HD 16:9 monitor so should I aim for 16:10 1440p?
My budget is roughly 400 +- though I'd rather save money if possible
are you going to be a tryhard or playing in esport leagues for your games? if not you don't necessarily need 144hz, but If you are stick to 1080p @ 144Hz 24ā that's what most pro gamers use and they usually lower their resolution and game settings..gsync is a meme but only because of the price you pay to get it..resolution is all preference top csgo players use 4:3 with black bars or 4:3 stretched, shroud who is one of the top csgo players uses full 1080p 16:9
>>55067058
I am in no way a try hard or esport gamer, I've just heard so much talk about 144hz, 60fps has been perfectly fine for me but I've heard once 144 you can't go back. The main things I want are a 1440p main monitor with a vertical aide monitor that match's the height
Your use of the word meme is literally a meme. If you don't want to "fall for a meme" then stop speaking like a sperglord who spends all day on the internet trying to "fit in" by spouting all the latest memes.
Is there any legally binding action I can take in which assures I am fully accredited for my business start-up idea that I dont have the skills to code into a functioning website? Is there a legally binding action I can take that assures that I hold 100% of the company as well? I am very worried that the person I hire to code the website will steal the idea and make it his own start-up as well as take all the credit.
>>55066960
If you are truly serious about this, get a lawyer involved. Ask him the best way to do this and also have him draw up an airtight contract for the coder.
Having said that, don't kid yourself. I hope your project succeeds but ideas are absolutely worthless. The coder you're hiring likely has excellent ideas of their own, but those are also worthless unless they can can fund and build their projects. At the end of the day, only implementations matter.
Also, your idea is as grand as this yet it can be implemented by one person?
>>55066960
>Is there any legally binding action I can take
yes, the action of getting a lawyer, faggot
>>55067010
Thanks for the reply. Also, I am thinking about getting some sort of government grant to fund the start-up although there is a good chance of there being nothing like that for me to receive help from. The start-up does have a loosely scientific application but for reasons I cannot tell I doubt the government would want anything to do with it. Only reason Im thinking this is because I know that there are government grants for people starting up their own ISP's. I am not really considering a loan at all at this point because I heard that thats about the dumbest shit you can possibly do when attempting to start up a business since if the start-up fails, which will likely occur, then you are left absolutely crushed.
>Also, your idea is as grand as this yet it can be implemented by one person?
Good point. Thanks for bringing that up. Thing is, is that my idea is actually fairly simple yet can have multiple branches added onto the main idea that perhaps I could implement later. But the main idea is very simple so I really dont know if it could be handled by one person. My idea could work out as a phone application and I feel like it may be a bit easier to make that so if you would, I'd like to hear what you know about that. Im thinking about possibly starting backwards actually and building and releasing the application first and then expanding to a full fledged website that operates as the main source of access. Releasing it as a phone application would cut out the website domain costs as well as the server hosting I am pretty sure, so thats a plus.
Hello everyone, be/g/inner here
I have decided to get into the world of programming and I am asking for /g/'s advice.
I have some ideas here and there which I believe it is time to manifest.
I want to start with small programs for utility, then smartphone apps and, when I git gud, I will start working on a PC game I have been theorycrafting on paper for 4 years now.
Where do I start? What will I need?
Any suggestions about languages/editors?
>a friend of mine recommended C# and/or java
Any books?
>for advanced learners, ideally
What am I missing?
Can I even pull it off without attending university classes?
>assuming I will maintain discipline successfully
Editor does not matter, use what you are comfortable with. Java or C++ is a good start, and will teach you a lot, but python is easier to get into. Peek in the gentoomens library my for books.
>>55066944
Thanks for the info.
>>55067015
If you're an absolute beginner and want to get through the basics fairly smoothly(C++), I'd recommend Jumping Into C++. The author is great, and it's as easy to read as The Catcher in the Rye
No, Windows 8.1 and 10 are bliss compared to it, hell, even 8 is better.
Yes, specifically Enterprise edition

Quit lying
Help guys. I'm building a new gaming PC right now. So far, this is what I've come up to keep it at sub ~$1,000 price. I've chosen the cheapest yet new-ish CPU (i5-4460) because I'm planning on keeping this for 4 years or more. Other components are the cheapest as possible without sacrificing system safety. GPU is vanilla GTX 970, which I heard is the minimum for VR (I might get into it in the future if it gets cheaper). Any suggestions is very much appreciated.

wait to buy a RX480
Get the Rx 480. Will perform at 980 levels, for $200, with low temps and power consumption. You just have to wait about 2 weeks.
>>55066970
With that money you saved on the GPU, get a SSD. One of the best things you can buy for your PC.
So I am getting a new power supply in order to use my new gpu. So as a guy who has never changed a power supply before.... how bad can I possibly fudge it up? Anything I should know before diving right into it?
you cant plug it in wrongly
you can forgot some cables, like the 4/8 pin near the cpu, or the 6/8 pin in to gpu
nothing happens if forgot, you just need to connect them
>>55066722
Take a picture so you remember what needs to be plugged in where. Good luck, its probably one of the easier things to do.
Don't forget to turn the switch on ;^)
>>55066746
If it's a modular you most definitely plug some models in wrongly. When I was 15 and stupid I cooked two 3.5 Blacks by plugging the modular sata power into a port for PCIE power. Granted, it's really a PSU design fault and I should have been paying more attention, but it is possible sometimes.
Hey /g/ getting new laptop for the summer and I wondered if this is any good

It is bretty gud but dont expect it to live a long life. 2 of the guys i play with got these msi shits and basically they die every two years.
