Installing arch on my acer veriton v5 right now after years of using *buntu. Did I fall for a meme?
nah, if you don't fuck it up too much it's more stable than ubuntu
modern linux core is too stable to fuck up.
just make sure you have a way to remote in if you mess up your wm like most 1st time arch users do
>>55176344
actually my first time with arch went super smooth, it was the third time that fucked me over big time.
So I finally got fed up with having to deal with all the bottlenecking factors that come with using a laptop for anything requiring slightly moderate processing power. Because of this, I am building a nice pc rig for gaming and 3d modeling and the likes. However, the room I have moved in to has no local ports for an ethernet connection, so LAN is off the table.
> mfw I will still have to deal with wifi gaming bullshit
Anyways, I am going to have to get by with plugging in a wifi adapter to the pc so I can use the wifi signal. I posted the Ookla benchmark for my routers signal here, which doesn't seem bad to begin with.
Cont.
What a fucking ramble. We didn't need practically any of the information you provided in the OP.
WiFi access points? Get a router which supports DD-WRT and you can configure it to your heart's content. Or you can try powerline adapters.
However, with the room I am in being upstairs, and with multiple people on the same signal at once, ping spikes are all too frequent and general connection tends to wither all too much for optimal gaming connections. Because of this, I am thinking of investing in a wireless access point to place in my room to broadcast the wifi signal from upstairs to increase its strength. Anybody have experience with access points, and if so, how well would this work to provide a decent signal from the upstairs room?
>>55176120
Feel like the router is fine though, its just that its connection range suffers in rooms upstairs
What does /g/ compress their audio with? I was thinking of buying a Neve 2254 and then using a Raspberry Pi as source.

How does Samsung Gear VR compare to more expensive vr like Occulus rift and the like?
I know it's not gonna be the same, but I have heard that Gear VR is actually not that bad. Anyone tried them?
>>55176039
No idea, only got this email the other day, and I ordered the fucking thing in February.
it used to be cool with the built-in store, but now it's completely fucking awesome.
https://riftcat.com/vridge opened up the entire catalog of steamVR games with it, making it a wireless capable Rift (with a better panel if you have an S7).
You can play stuff like Dolphin-VR, use the leap motion and other motion controls, and it's pretty much indistinguishable from the rift.
HTC Vive has the roomscale advantage for sure, but given the overpriced tech demos it's not worth it to me. This is perfect to tide me over until it comes down in price.
>>55176278
I'm skeptical of this working very well. Streaming 2k video at 90 FPS over wifi is going to use a ton of bandwidth. There's gotta be a noticeable amount of latency, and it wouldn't have positional tracking.
Have you used it? How does it compare to the Rift or Vive?
Hey, /g/, like my logging framework? Its compatible with all languages that can write a file to disk. Inspired by dmesg
>>55175963
looks amazing!!
>>55175995
To be honest I'd disable that bold effect, looks too much like systemd
Why the hell does windows explorer never remember this setting after each power down? I have to either sleep the PC instead of powering off or keep re-adding it in options if I want to sort my folders by date modified again.
What the fuck is this shit?
Are you running some kind of "cleaner" which is wiping your registry changes?
>>55175973
Not to my awareness no
do a registry dump
switch that setting on
do a registry dump again
diff them
That moment when you just want to learn about what's up in the JS community and a feminist starts preaching.
>tfw you just want to use a framework online and some shitlord threatens to grape you
It's amazing how much money there is to be had for simply making the same observation over and over again. We know that people on the internet suck. We know that they suck offline too. If you don't want to hear it then you need to move to a different planet.
>tfw graped by my online framework again
When can we expect third party cards at the MSRP?
When there's more than 100k cards in global supply.
Just before 1170 release

should stabilize around august or end of the year at latest
Which MOBILE music player does /g/ use?
Phonograph here. And I love it.

Does changing screen colors from "blue" to "red" really improve sleep? Can you even fix blue light from software alone?
Yes.
Yes and yes

Yes it helps, I'm going to use these sort of programs forever
I know that they're run by SJWs, but all of my classmates at the university use it, and the dick-measuring contest of trying to rack up green squares is a pull for loser like me. Is there anything similar in Gitlab?
Also feel free to list other reasons to not even consider it.

Has this actually ever happened?
>It's literally not that hard to run your own git server
>You can run 1 in the VPS in your website for free
>You can run 1 in a rasPi that you can open to the web
Absolutely agreed.
>CLI normie tier interface
Are you talking about the GH client?
>mercurial is less bloated
Mercurial is okay
>SVN legacy master race
Now you're just blatantly trolling lel
>>55175747
Because of the whole "social coding" shit that GH pushes. Its issue tracker is pretty fucking shit and the GH client is fucking awful.
>>55175982
>Has this actually ever happened?
I've yelled at so many remote engineers for being late on the code delivery and just submitting me a github link with the whole "I don't want to reinvent the wheel!". I'd be impressed if they can get half way to designing the damned wheel
>Are you talking about the GH client?
Yup, that horrible, horrible client
>Now you're just blatantly trolling lel
SVN and git where a coin toss until github happened
I don't prefer SVN, but it's not as dead as people say it is
Is programming still valuable in finding work nowadays?
Before
>few people could code
>companies want those who can
>high pay
Now
>market is flooded
>companies can pick and choose
>average salary
Are there other tech skills that command high salaries?
Yes, but all skills are secondary to your ability to play the social game. Employment is about who you know and what sort of personal politics you publicly advertise.
>>55175734
i make 50K a year with PHP you tell me
>>55175781
This. Fuck I hate office politics. It's all about smooching the right managers even if you hate their fucking guts. How good you are doesn't mean shit.
Dear /g/.
Can I ask you for a little help with planning my new PC?
In before - yes, I know about Logicalncrements. In fact, I was using it as reference, but Im still not sure about mixing items from different tiers. And thats why I made this thread. I tried asking at /guts/ before, but didnt got reply.
I plan to buy new PC around mid July or something around. I already decided about CPU (i7-6700K) and GPU (RX480), but Im still not sure about other elements.
In advance - I dont want to OC. At least not manually.
1) Mobos with chipset Z170 are usually recommended, but Im too "green" to see a difference between, say, Asus Z170-A, -P, -K, -M-Plus, MSI Z170A Pro or ASRock Z170 Pro 4S. And they have important difference in prices. I was actually thinking about Gigabyte GA-170 HD3P, but again - I would need somebody to help me decide.
Another important thing is that I noticed some sort of "Auto Tune" function in Asus mobos. I think that Gigabyte have something similar too ("Quick Boost" or something like that). Does this functions really work? Are they really safe?
2) How powerful PSU I actually need? extreme.outervision.com said I would need 620W PSU, but I, again, see differences in prices between same brand and same output. Corsair CX650M looks nice, but, for example, in what aspects Corsair VS 650W ATX is worse, since it have lower price?
3) What kind of CPU cooling I need, since i7 is provided without stock one? When I asked recently (outside of /g/) if 212 Evo (recommended by LogicalIncrements) or Cryorig M9I are good, I got told that they are not good enough. Next suggested position, NH-U12S, cost twice as much. What cooling I would need, if I dont intend to OC or at lest, I would only use "automatic" ones provided by motherboard manufacturer?
(cont in next post)
4) What case should I look for? I was thinking about Thermaltake V3, but again, got told that it is "too light-weight" (they probably assume that it is made out of poor quality materials). I just want mid-tower that would fit three HDDs and basic components and would not cover in dust within week or two (problem existing with my current case).
Overall, I have around 850 EUR for whole PC, except of HDDs and optical drive that comes from previous PC.
Thank you for any advice or help.
Anybody?
>>55175641
>use pcpartpicker then pick psu 150 watts above that atleast is good, don't want it running on max 24/7 and good warranty (5+ years)
>asus or asrock are good mobos, msi can be iffy
>auto oc will give you lower results then manual as it has a safty margin, don't know too much about it though
>212 evo is okay commonly used aftermarket cooler but make sure case can fit it as aftermarket air cooling is fuck all huge
>most cases above 60$ should be good
what are you using it for? OS?
So what's a good distro for a pentium 4?
Distro does not matter
As far as being lightweight goes, use XFCE or LXDE
>>55175632
>lightweight
>a DE
>>55175673
>caring about 100-200mb of ram
Even with only 512mb of ram, which most p4 machines would have stock, it's not a big deal.
Less than 512mb? Like 256? Go Windowmaker/GNUStep
128mb, either fucking upgrade or use a basic wm like i3/subtle
I get tracking cookies from porn sites, should I be worried anons?
