I currently do Business Intelligence for a small tech company, but I'd like to be a software engineer- the pay is better, and I find the work really interesting.

I don't have a computer science degree, but I have good python and SQL, and a little java so that's a start, though obviously I have a long way to go.

What's the next step if I wanted to work as an engineer? What should I focus on?

I'm pretty friendly with the engineers at work, so that's a good place to start I guess, thanks

In terms of learning though, what should I be working on? Backend stuff seems a bit more appealing to me

Is it even possible to write not over-engineered software with Java? Why have I never seen a not over-engineered Java program?

Some things just need a single function instead of a whole class, and not everything needs an interface.
But OOP abusers(I know a couple irl) who implement interfaces for everything even though they won't need more than a single implementation.
The "but what if I need another type of implementation in the future"? The answer is you probably don't if you don't know already.

Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

/g/ I have a question for you. I have a Win 7 with an OEM key. I want to update to Win 10. I heard from Win 8 and up the OEM keys get somehow bound to the motheboard, which I intend to replace soon, but after getting Win 10. What happens if I replace the mobo? Will I lose the key and have to get a new one?

I want to have a small dedicated device for torrenting, and to be able to network the movies and music to my laptop, desktop PC, and to my TV with a roku or smart bluray player.

What is the best way to do this well without spending a fortune?

Also is there like a linux distro that would be great for this?
I cant imagine windows would be a good option for it.

>Commodore Amiga 600 with hard drive and 2MB RAM with a box of floppies+ joystick's if he find's them

I never used these machines and don't know shit about them, also as much I could find out it's a 1992 machine with a motorola CPU, so no Windows or Linux, just the OS it comes with.
He told me it's a great gaming machine but I don't find anything special Googling about it, not to mention I never heard of it before, is it worth the purchase? There's none on E-bay so I have no clue how much they actually cost, could I at least make a profit on it?If not, the PSU was pretty heavy and probably could get quite some copper out of it, also wonder what hard drive it has, probably could sell it? Keyboard felt nice too, some sticky goo on it tho but mechanical probably, is there a way to mod it for a PC?
