Low on precious screen real estate, or busy massaging your carpal tunnel
wrists damaged by waving a mouse around like an idiot? A tiling window manager
might be for you!
> Freedom from the mouse
With any decent twn, you're hand almost never has to leave the home row.
> High customizability
All well known twms are built with customizability in mind, either through a
config file, command line options, or in the case of dwm, editing the source
code directly.
> Efficient use of screen space
because each new window will split the screen one level further, the available
screen space is used optimally (yes, even when using gaps).
> L I G H T W E I G H T
using a tiling window manager forgoes the need for a bloated DE, simply
install any necessary software on top of the window manager to build exactly
the system you want with no cruft!
> Resources
i3wm - https://i3wm.org/
Babby's first twm, easily customizable from a central config file, has sane
defaults. Usable out of the box.
bspwm - https://github.com/baskerville/bspwm
Binary Space Partitioning Window Manager
bspwm is a tiling window manager that represents windows as the leaves of a full binary tree.
dwm - http://dwm.suckless.org/
Dynamic Window Manager written in C.
Slightly higher learning curve than most other twms, basic knowledge of C is
necessary for configuration as it takes place in the header file. Very
lightweight.
awesomewm - https://awesomewm.org/
Supports lots of features out of the box, less initial configuration necessary than some others.
Shares the concept of tags with dwm which can be more flexible than workspaces
herbsluftwm - https://www.herbstluftwm.org/
Manual twm with similar tiling system to i3
Can be reconfigured on the fly using herbstclient

How do I use polybar properly with herbstluftwm? Everytime I start it the windows don't make space for it and the workspace indicator doesn't work.
Or should I forget about polybar and use some other alternative?
>>61949077
Have you configured it for bspwm? I think the config defaults to i3. It's as simple as uncommenting some lines
How can i add border in i3-gaps only when my gaps are disabled ? Can you bind a border toggle ?

Would it be a stupid idea to build my own server at my house just to fuck with and learn?
Nope, I have done it. Keep in mind:
1) Power usage
2) Noise
>>61946939
no. what'd be stupid is buying old rack hardware to do it. at least until you're advanced enough to need a managed switch or something. you can learn a lot with VMs and a few spare generic desktops.
If you want, go for it.
Why is git so unintuitive? Fuck.
is it? I got the hang of it quickly and I am a wintard. whats your excuse
learn its data model, and exactly how the commands operate on that data model, and it will make perfect sense.

Thanks for the replies, much appreciated :)
The gpu arrived a few hours ago, a Sapphire Vega 64 Liquid 8GB; a very nice looking card.
I just got it installed after cleaning out case dust and taking some pics.
I'm using the win7 (no 8.1 drivers)Vega drivers from AMD's website: win7-64bit-radeon-rx-vega-software-17.30.1051-b6-aug7.exe
Now some answers for prev thread:
I installed the heaven bench and have 3dmark and pcmark.
I also installed Arma 3 and have Fallout4, Warhammer, BF1, Civ6, Witcher 3 and more.
Thanks for Gamersnexus link - watching now, I will do as you say re undervolting as post results.
The psu is a Corsair AX1500i.
Noise levels - it runs very quiet, I can hardly hear it @ idle; with a temp of 24 degrees c. Regarding noise from other fans - I have 2x140mm case fans and a liquid cpu cooler with 2x140mm fans on the radiator.
I have pics of the case internals which I will upload very soon.
Refresh for results :)

Nice space helmet.
I have recently started to slowly adopt a number of /g/ memes, and, quite frankly, doing so has made my tech experience better than it ever has been before.
> Learn C
> Way comfier than C++, code is slightly more verbose but way easier to understand because it's not nearly as bloated
> Now ready to learn kernel programming which I've wanted to do for a long time
> Install gentoo
> Learn way more about Linux than I ever thought I'd know
> Computer boots in seven seconds because everything is compiled exactly as I need it and there's no unnecessary shit to load
> Use IceCat
> Kind of a pain in the ass sometimes
> But freedom and a cool cat logo are worth it
> Emacs
> all the nice features of a full-blown editor with none of the bloat
> elisp is c o m f y compared to shitty vimscript trash
> write 10x more code these days because of how nice Emacs is
> ThinkPad
> My first /g/ meme
> Cheapest laptop I've ever bought and yet still out-specs everything else I've had
> Durable and nice keyboard
windows C# visual studio plebs will never be this comfy
>>61942213
>Cool cat logo
Emacs is bloat incarnate.
>>61942213
I think you can also boot other distros in seconds, its the power of systemd.
But gentoo has been nice in terms of long term maintainability.
Gnome 3.26 is being released soon, there have been numerous improvements, gnome vanilla will finally be usable.
Firefox is being ported to GTK3+ for greater integration,
Electron is also being ported
Shows over boys, pack your bags
I'll stick to xfce.
>>61942137
But does it have thumbnails in the file picker?
>>61942137
GNOME should freeze its development until they fix their gtk file chooser
>Note: Starting in Firefox 57, which will be released in November 2017, only add-ons built with this new technology will work in Firefox. These are indicated by the “Compatible with Firefox 57+” label on addons.mozilla.org (AMO). Add-ons built with the old technology are labeled “Legacy” on the about:addons tab.
How do you plan to deal with this shit?
