Welcome to /flt/ - Friendly Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about Linux and share their experiences.

*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly Linux Thread. ***

Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].

If you would like to try out Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with Linux.

My closed loop watercooler pump just died on me,
should I invest on a Noctua fan or is it just a meme?

>>
>>55245680

Just purchase any fan, all the fans are the same. Get one of the cheapest ones for $5.
>>
>>55245702

Some are a little better (higher CFM)

Cougar seems to make the highest CFM ones that don't require odd power supplies.

Get a 212 Evo+ and two 75CFM Cougars.

Works very very well and costs like $60
>>
>>55245680
Noctua fans? Overpriced. Noctua heatsinks? Best purchase ever. Installated without a problem and temps never rise above 75°.

That's objectively wrong. $5 will get you some throwaway sleeve bearing garbage.

For those of you who went to Uni/College how did you survive? What'd you occupy your time with. Im about to be an incoming freshman (inb4 summerfag) and I'm nervous about not knowing anyone, and staying in the with some douche. Where can I find people I can relate to? I'm going for comp sci btw and fuck all of you who say it's a dumbass degree that can be outsourced by pajeets. That could be true, but I know that I've been wanting to learn about computer science from a teacher other than the internet since I was 8. I have two brothers who are comp sci majors who have jobs. Pic related

find a club for your interest.
learn to balance your time studying/vidyaing/socializing/sleeping.
don't go home to much but dont forget to call your parents because they miss you.
make friends ESPECIALLY in a major like comp sci because your classmates tend to not be social.
dont be afraid to ask for help from your TA and Professor if you need it.
dont be afraid to meet with your advisor or ask for a new one if yours is shit.
do things you wouldnt normally do.
find a spot on campus where you can study and a different one where you can relax (whether a library, a bench, whatever)
meet everyone on your floor in the dorm.
everyone has a shitty roommate. everyone has some cool roommates.
college is what you make of it.

I am trying to tranfer data from a laptop to my desktop. The laptop is locked down pretty good, so anything copied to external media is encrypted. Network traffic is monitored, so I can't upload it somewhere or email it without risk.

My initial ideas:

Idea 1

>Zip up data and convert archive to base64
>Write base64 string to text file
>Record a video of the base64 being paged through
>Extract frames from video every 2 seconds
>Use OCR program to convert the stillframes to text
>Combine text files and convert the base64 back into binary

I have been trying Tesseract and my luck is hit/miss. I know this can be done, but getting a 100% confidence seems very difficult. Is there an optimal font for Tesseract or OCR in general? I tried an OCR-A rip-off font from Sourcefourge, but I get a higher confidence with Arial or Courier New.

Idea 2

>Transfer the data from my work pc to home pc via analog audio carrier signal

This prompted someone to mention amodem which sounded really cool. If I could just hook up an audio cable from my laptop's headphone jack to my PC's line in, I could get a crystal-clear analog signal.

My initial post got some really good ideas from anons:

>amodem

>qr codes

This idea was really cool. I'd encode my binaries to base64 and then convert that to multiple QR codes, each of which I could display on the laptop and scan with my cell phone to post bits of base64 to my website. Sadly, max URL lengths are 2000 or so characters and I don't even think a QR code can hold that much to begin with.

>DNS tunneling

While articles everywhere mention how this is nearly impossible to detect, there is still risk, so I do not want to try it.

I am getting desperate by the day here. Do any anon brains have any other ideas? Remember, I cannot use...

>network (LAN, WiFi, etc)
>external storage (ie, anything that plugs into the laptop)
>internet (can't upload to an FTP, GitHub, email, etc)

Please help. Thanks /g/

It's most likely encrypted as well. I suppose it's worth a shot as I get closer to the date by which I need this information.
>>
Encrypted traffic?

Give a open source program that can record a screen and is fairly lightweight. You should be able to resize the recording window as well.

I need something to record cucked video players that don't let you download through any program.

Hi, yall.
I escaped from /b/ just to ask you if you could help me out with something.

I have a couple videos from "GoldenShowerPower" 1920x1080 in MKV format. The problem is that it's only playing audio, no video. I tried to convert them to other formats I tried differant convertion soft. but nothing works.
Please take note, that all other MKV and all other video formats are playing with no problems. It's just the one from GoldenShowerPower that wont play.
Please desperate for some help.

I dont think mental help will solve my codec problem. Why all the hate? Can someone please help me? It's very strange that only the MKV files from GoldenShowerPower wont work, while all other MKV and other video formats do work.

And no, the videos are not corrupt. I'm really desperate for some help.
