What is the best API or framework for beginning vidya programming, and why is it XNA/Monogame?
It doesn't provide a ready-made rendering engine with too many ready-made data structures and whatnot, but isn't low-level enough that you have to constantly worry about low-level implementation issues as you try to learn the necessary 3D math, and using C# over C++ means (as far as I understand) generally cleaner code with no need to think about memory management, not even RAII.
Later on, one can mess around with graphics APIs proper and learn how to deal with lower level issues/those automatically handled by XNA, but for learning and quickly applying 3D math it has so far been great for me.
What are some frameworks and APIs you recommend, and why?

Welcome to /fglt/ - Friendly GNU/Linux Thread.
Users of all levels are welcome to ask questions about GNU/Linux and share their experiences.
*** Please be civil, notice the "Friendly" in every Friendly GNU/Linux Thread. ***
Before asking for help, please check our list of resources[*].
If you would like to try out GNU/Linux you can do one of the following:
0) Install a GNU/Linux distribution of your choice in a Virtual Machine using VirtualBox or other software made for this puporse for safety purposes.
1) Use the Live ISO (if your distribution of choice has one) to boot directly into the GNU/Linux distribution without installing anything, that way, you can get to experience the GNU/Linux operating system without installing it.
2) Dual boot the GNU/Linux distribution of your choice along with Windows or macOS, this is recommended if you want to know more about the GNU/Linux operating system.
3) Go balls deep and replace everything with GNU/Linux.

How can I discover new open-source programs for my GNU/Linux, beside APT SEARCH? I would like some programs that I couldn't find there...
I was trying to get rid of some bloat on KDE through Discover (games, duplicate applications, etc.) and when I rebooted, I got the black screen. I was able to save myself by usingsudo apt-get install kde-full. What's a better way to get rid of bloat?

Well when I was a teenager I got the wrong RAM and was too upset to get a refund.
Still have it kicking around, just unused.
Everything else I use so it's not wasted at all.

/hsg/ - Because fuck you edition.
What would you use a home server for? /g/ answer - Fuck you!. Simple answer - For whatever you want.
From media to development to virtualization, options abound.
Power - Any server DDR2 based is going to be power hungry. Any multi-socket Intel system is FBDIMM
based. Anything else is ECC. With DDR3 based units coming off 2nd lease, anything DDR2 should be
avoided.
Plex - 1080p transcoding at 10MBPS requires a CPUMark score of ~2000 per stream. This is especially
true with first generation i3/5/7 / DDR3 Xeons. The more recent the CPU, the more slack there is in
this. For some reason, Plex doesn't seem to like low power options (Xeon 1220L, for example).
Virtualization - ESXi, KVM, Hyper-V, etc. ESXi is generally used by Linux heavy shops that aren't
cloud centered. KVM is usually used in OpenStack. Hyper-V is for mostly Microsoft centric shops. These
are all free, so use what you like.
Storage - Both ZFS and Storage Spaces pool. If you're going to use these options, do NOT configure the
drive with a hardware RAID controller. Many options are available in general, such as FreeNAS,
Nas4Free, OpenMediaVault, Windows Storage Server, Linux / Unix / BSD, etc. Some are free, some are
not.
What should I get? A good starting point, if you don't want to build your own system, is an HP
Proliant Micro G8, 8GB DDR3 ECC (Not Registered or RDIMM), 4 3.5" drives, and a 16GB micro SD card.
Install OpenMediaVault on the SD card, and enjoy ZFS, Plex, and whatever else you want to try.
Where can I get things? Ebay is a good place to start. Used / refurbished gear is fine, provided that
the seller is selling a large quantity of them. With drives especially, this is the case. The only
real drive to avoid is the Seagate ES.2 1TB. These have faulty firmware and fail prematurely (Ask
EMC).

If you're looking for purchase advice, READ THE BUYERS GUIDE FIRST. Then post, stating budget and requirements (e.g. size and performance).
Don't buy anything OTHER THAN T, X AND W/P SERIES if you want the Real ThinkPad Experience™
Recommended models:
T420 - 14", normal size
X220 - 12.5", ultraportable
----
Why ThinkPad? (also applies to other business laptops)
>Used machines are plentiful and cheap.
>Excellent keyboards - tactile feel and quiet.
>Great durability: chassis uses a magnesium rollcage for structural integrity, with high quality plastic body panels.
>Utilitarian design: e.g. indicator LEDs, 7 row keyboard layout on older models.
>Docking stations that easily turns your laptop into a desktop.
>Easy to repair, upgrade and maintain thanks to readily available service manuals for every model. Spare parts are easy and cheap to obtain.
>The best trackpoint (that red thing in the middle of the keyboard). Great for those who type a lot or hate swiping their fingers all over a touchpad.
>Excellent GNU/Linux & *BSD support.

Hey guys, I'm looking for the best laptop under $250, shipping included. I only browse the internet, set up powerpoints and watch movies and I don't want to turn on the desktop for that simple shit every time.
I'm looking for a laptop that can handle those basic duties and some games like FTL, Starbound, Nuclear Throne or Minecraft to pass time when on the bus or bored on the couch. I want a new one. No refurbs.
How shit would link related be and what would be a better option?
>>55295338
>How shit would link related be
You already know how shit its going to be. You already know how bad the keyboard is, and how bad the build quality is going to be.
But you are going to buy it regardless of what anyone tells you.
>>55295338
Jesus fucking Christ, what an abomination. Kill it with fire. Also, where is the god damn clit mouse? Get an used x200 with a SSD and never look back. Those lower quality "ThinkPads" are made by Satan himself to make fun of the retards.
>>55295363
>>55295412
Can you guys tell me what's good then? I want a new one though.
I'm looking to buy an HDMI switch, since I have 5 consoles sitting on my desk. However, I've seen some that advertise "4k compatible at 30fps/30hz".
That kind of raises a concern for me. Shouldn't all HDMI switches support 4k anyways? They mention 30fps at 4K, but they don't mention frame rate at 1080p. Is 60fps at 1080p supposed to be assumed?
4k at 30fps means HDMI 1.4.
Go look up what that means.
>>55295071
Interesting. From what I'm seeing, HDMI 1.4 maxes out at 24fps at 4K. While HDMI 2 is deliver 60fps 4K. I swear I've come across HDMI 2.2 and 2.4 earlier today, unless I'm mistaken. I've also seen a bunch of other terms I'm not familiar with, such as HDCP and DDWG. I'm gonna need a glossary by the end of this.
I would assume 1080p runs at 60 fps through these but I would check the exact specifications of what you are going to buy before purchasing.
I bought a similar switch and I notice no drop in fps/hz at 1080p.
