Are "gaming" motherboards a meme? What do they actually offer other than looking edgy?
47 posts and 3 images submitted.
>>
Usually they're fairly good motherboards with a marked up price because of the "gamer aesthetic"
>>
>>55300481
I haven't really noticed much of a price premium on them. They're about the same price as non-flashy ones. The only difference is that you don't get so many simple-looking boards at the high end, with everything becoming gaymer-focused.
>>
>>55300461
They do tend to offer better gaming performance compared to non-gaming motherboards because that's what they're optimised for, usually at the expense of encoding speed. You are definitely still overpaying for the aesthetics of it, but there are definite advantages.

This occurred to me today: the past 20 years of internet access has been predicated on free data. As in, when you bought Internet you got unlimited data usage. However, this is objectively going away as data caps are implemented. Mobile carriers have already made the switch (now you get unlimited talk/text, with a data cap) and ISPs are doing so as well. Metered data is the past (late 80s/early 90s where you'd call in and use your minutes), and future, of the Internet.

This has profound implications:

1. 4k (or 16k, or whatever) won't go mainstream. HD only happened because people didn't ever think about the cost of a 1 mb video vs a 4 mb video.
2. adblocking will continue to go mainstream, since it offers the user a direct benefit (less data usage and faster loading)
3. AAA videogames will either have to come down in size, or people will stop buying them. The rise of Steam (a place where alternative, smaller games are offered) is the first step to this

free internet services like google, youtube and gmail will stick around but the way people interact with them might change. If data costs money, then people will think about each click in terms of "is this worth 50 cents to view?"

Only americucks have data caps
>>
Interesting thoughts. However it all predicates on the fact that more stringent data caps will be the trend.
>>
It's dependent on market trends, there are some worrying things. In the US Comcast has a 1TB data cap now, which is enough for a moderate amount of 4K video but worrying for people who drop video and watch online streaming at such a resolution. Some smaller ISPs have data caps, but currently Verizon FiOS doesn't have caps, and TWC/Charter had to agree to not implement them for several years as part of merger conditions.

My ISP does not have them now (Optimum Online/Cablevision), but they just got bought by a french company (Altice) notorious for data caps in Europe, and Altice implemented data caps on the other ISP they own in the US (Suddenlink) already.

The future probably is data caps to punish those who use the internet for more than light browsing and cut the cords to make up for profit lost on TV packages.

The interesting bit is that the ISPs are in a bit of a rock and a hard place by thinking they could exempt their own streaming services and squeeze out others with data caps, but then the courts have thus far backed Title II certification, meaning if ISPs don't want to be liable for what content users transfer (illegal images, copyright violations, etc.) then they can't fuck with the traffic. This will probably mean less direct ISP sponsored streaming services and more data caps in the interim to try to protect cable as a viable source of entertainment.

When we get really fucked is if someone comes up with a robust and reliable replacement for cable packages, and no, SlingTV doesn't count (you can only view it one device at a time making it useless for a household, and it's still missing a lot of sports). When that happens, data capping is inevitable. If most normies are willing to continue spending $100 a month or so on cable, caps will probably still exist but be much higher.

Fingerprinting thread, Browserprint has new tests edition
https://browserprint.info/
http://panopticlick.eff.org/
Remember, kids, disabling JavaScript is cheating, since many sites require JavaScript to work and fingerprinting code can be included in that mandatory JavaScript.

A blog post about fingerprinting users instead of browsers and devices, could there be a future in this?
https://browserprint.info/blog/userFingerprinting

Some kind anon many threads before posted a link to a story that indicates Google is injecting fingerprint code into their CAPTCHAs.
https://archive.is/9K5gs
This means that the majority of 4chan users could be being fingerprinted, and Google might know about your shitposting habits.
To fix this you can get a pass (which allows you to be tracked by 4chan in a different way), or you can trust the 4chan X extension and use that to run 4chan with all JavaScript disabled.

Daily reminder to do all your Facebook / Youtube / LinkedIn / botnet shit in a completely separate browser to your Googling or buying shit.
It's currently the ONLY way to truly defend against fingerprint tracking.
Double points if you have each browser running in a different VM with a different OS.
Triple points if you have each browser's VM configured with a different VPN.
The Tor Browser Bundle is still susceptible to many fingerprinting attacks that can uncover your true OS and browser.
Spoofing your user-agent is counterproductive unless you use a different user-agent for every site, even if you rotate them every x HTTP requests.

So here am I, building my first PC. Pic related is my build. Also it is normal for prices to drop when new stuff is released, but this disturbed me a lot:

The question is which GPU?

http://pcpartpicker.com/product/HbjWGX/asus-video-card-turbogtx970oc4gd5
>ASUS TURBO-GTX970-OC-4GD5
$421 -> 339$
price drop -19%
already OC a bit by manufacturer
4 != 3.5 GB problem
225 W
is white color

http://pcpartpicker.com/product/zf8H99/evga-video-card-04gp41989kr
>EVGA GeForce GTX 980 4GB Hybrid Video Card
$851 -> $430
price drop -49% HOLY FUCK
highest clock from any other 980 in my local
don't know if this is also OC
no fucking 3.5 GB problem
165 W (more powerful yet less watts???)
isn't white color

Seriously which one do I buy?
The 980 costs now as the 970 before sale. That means the 980 was always SUPER OVERPRICED or there is some catch. The only thing which holds me atm back is the black doesn't look good in everything else white.

Pls /g/ I know you are all enthusiastic about 1080 vs 480, but please help me decide which one. My target is to play 1080@60fps in the next few years without having to OC or tinker.

Also this shop of mine changes costs crazy without warning. Is this buy of year for me or no?

>buy 1070 / 1080
I won't buy the newest nVidia 1000 series because it is overpriced new stuff, which is normal.
>buy any amd stuff
I do more things with my computer than games, I need GNU/Linux friendly hardware and that isn't anything AMD related.

>ASUS TURBO-GTX970-OC-4GD5

>EVGA GeForce GTX 980 4GB Hybrid Video Card

Is it worth to go for 980 now?
Isn't it overkill for 1080@60 fps?
How is it possible the price went half down?
>>
>>55300188
>My target is to play 1080@60fps
That's not really that lofty of a goal.

Drop ~$450 and run two 970's in SLI or a 980ti and you'll be fine.

Or

Drop $500 and get a decently-cooled 1070.

Either way, now (today) is probably the worst possible time to go GPU shopping. The 9-series models are just now beginning to come down in price, and some sellers are selling out even without price cuts because the 10-series is so scarce.

You'll be able to get a 980ti for $350 in a couple of weeks once the 10's flood the shelves. I mean the 1070 outperforms the 980ti and it costs less right out of the factory. In a few weeks no one in their right mind will be buying them anymore.

Also:
>I won't buy the newest nVidia 1000 series because it is overpriced new stuff
What's weird is that it's surprisingly cheap. If you want to be "all set for the next few years" but feel like $450 is overpriced, I don't know what to tell you.

Science, mathematics, and medicine have used Latin or Greek so that the terminology is unbiased between language, yes?

So maybe technology and engineering should do the same? What about Sanskrit? Like the reserve words in program language can be derive from Zanskrit yes?

Technology and systems ideas are universal like science / math.
8 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
I would say no, because nobody cares.
>>
>>55300088
Nope. Programming ability is based on the ability to understand and remember different logical contexts. Translating from a dead language will not aid in that at all.
>>
>>55300088
Sanskrit already outlived its usefulness by giving us linguistic section.

So if you want anything, just learn linguistics.

Why do all the LG1151 boards still have PS2 mouse and keyboard connectors but no optical audio? I'm gonna upgrade from my old i7 after the summer but can't find any good motherboards (on my local retailer's site)

i don't know why but optical is a jittery mess. No one uses it for serious audio. No one.

Properly terminated coax for the win.

I use a pro firewire card, but when linux didn't have the drivers for it i had a close look at my motherboard manual.

All mobos have a spdif 75ohm coax output on the board. Read your manual. I found the jumpers ans soldered some coax to it and made my own god damn port. good luck friend.
