How many hams are here? What level are you? What got you into it?
I'm a tech an working on my gen about 6month and got into it for a few reasons..something to play with and some volunteer work. getting a strong understanding if/during a shft.

I'm a tech, but have barely touched it and really just did it for my dad.
I barely know how to work a radio and just scraped by on the test.
I've love to get into it for using some frequencies legally for meshnet. Unfortunately no one in my area seems to have any interest in playing with that idea and the local chatter is worse than YouTube comments.
>>55350217
like youtube comments but from old fat guys.
Yup, faggots.

Why are newfriends using Windows?
-Shits on your privacy
-Windows 7 is dying soon
-Updates takes approx 4 hrs and breaks your system
-Ads everywhere, have to pay extra for ad free experience
-Can't even change fonts

Are you saying you browse /g/ and don't know about virtualization
>>Muh hardware acceleration
Educate yourself: https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch09.html#pcipassthrough
>Why do you have to use virtual machine, are you just being a hipster
This would be true but there is no way to justify Microsoft's policy on forced upgrades and adware in security patches.
>Why keep the machine busy with VMs
Why not, not like you are using a pre 2005 system. Also, you don't do video rendering on your laptop on a traffic, do you?
>There is no privacy
Anything is better than having your private folders accessed to
>Do you hide something?
As a foreigner why exactly should I let my files open to a US secret service?
Windows is prone to viruses and malware vulnerability. It's a pain in the ass to debug if anything goes wrong. Windows belongs to VMs
Prove me wrong.

Win7 ends in 2019
2019 will be the year I give up on Windows
and get a mac
Furthermore, PCI passthrough technology is maturing very quickly. Operating systems should not be restricted by it's software anymore.
I hope they are working with combining Seamless/Unity mode so that multimonitor requirement becomes irrelevant.
>>55350132
Mac versions of software are actually dumbed down. I know you are not going to believe me but I realised it when me my friend were working with Minitab. The functionality were not the same, windows version was definately more feature rich and some features needed him to upgrade his product

no thanks.

I've noticed that my connection for online games is laggy. Me and my girlfriend were both playing a game and her ping was a consistent 33 ms while mine would spike from 33 ms to 200-300 ms sporadically. We're in the same room and connected to the same WiFi, what the fuck is this? It's not a hardware issue, my laptop has better specs than hers.
Pic sorta related I guess
>>55350011
How do you imagine wifi works? Fairy deliveries betwixt the router and your pc?
It sounds like you discovered the cause without realizing it. When you do, I suggest you remove it from layer eight.
>>55350052
isn't that how it works tho
>>55350066
I don't really understand the joke you're trying to make but if you're implying my girlfriend being on the same connection is causing the problem that's just wrong because I experience the same issue when she's not here, if anything her ping staying consistent while mine lags is further proof that there's something amiss.
Been getting some crazy packet loss on a gameservers hosted TeamSpeak today. Now that I think about it there has been a lot of packet loss here lately.
Okay. Cool story bro.
>>55350008

That's what I thought at first so me and my buddy hosted a TeamSpeak from his computer and I got some extreme packet loss so I hosted one on my computer and the packet loss persisted. Him being on the west coast and me on the east coast.

how do people make billions of these circuits and the instruction sets which modern languages can communicate with? how is this shit organized? is it just a redundant array of logical blocks that perform division, multiplication, bitwise movements, and indexing? it's so baffling that we went from candle lit dinners to this in less than a century.
where do i start for understanding CPU design and fabrication /g/? i want to make the next most powerful machine. my current understanding is that silicon is mined and melted into a giant ass tube that then gets bisected into discs that have a copper substrate deposited onto it via chemical vapor deposition and then it has another layer of some UV curing material on top of that, from which a UV projection of the IC schematic is superimposed onto the surface, which cures the coating. and then you put it through an acid bath and then the cpu is finished. super rough but im hoping its the right direction at least or i can't trust anything anymore...
We build upon the foundations of others.
Look at transistors, and how the very first CPU's worked.

My wife's son gets a kick out of this every time!
I want to make a program that will impress an employer. I want to do something that no one has done before. Problem is, I don't have any ideas on what to make.
Suggestions
Make an ''ideas guy'' -thread in /v/. They always have bunch of groundbreaking ideas no one has ever done before.
>>55349621
this is holy shit vague. what programming languages do you know?
>>55349621
problem with a program no one has done before is it probably needs a real problem being solved, or else it may not seem all that impressive.
What are these things called? Are they 'artifacts'? Screen-tearing?
They flicker rapidly, shrink/expand horizontally but not vertically. they happen on the desktop and browsing the net. I think it's different from 'screen-tearing' in games because screen-tearing happens when the frames can't keep up and v-sync isn't activated, and it only happens during movement. This is different because there is no movement but the artifacts themselves. Anyone know what this is? Because Google doesn't seem to know.
I'm asking out of curiosity and a love for technolo/g/y, not as a tech support question. This thread is meant to promote technolo/g/ical discussion, so please discuss.

Your GPU is dying.
>>55349531
artifacts,
Screen tearing is something completely different.
Go cook your graphics card in a oven.
Those look pretty rad, like a cool burning effect on ur screen

I recommend you to kill yourself, dumb anime poster.

Stick to windows, buddy.
hey /g/ i'm going to build my first PC
I investigated and kind of understand how CPU and GPU works and can tell if one is better than another, but how the fuck do i know which motherboard is better from which besides price and does it matter if i'm just going to play games?
I read that motherboards doesn't matter that much and most buy the cheapest available but don't know if this completely true.
