Hey /g/, I need some help building a computer for my friend, he's just getting out of basic training and needs a gaming computer since his old one was stolen while moving back to Oregon.
http://pcpartpicker.com/list/WVRJ8K
This is what I currently have put together, his budget is around 900$ including monitor (Thankfully he still has keyboard/mouse) so I'm a bit over.
Is there anything I could improve on? I'm trying to get him the best bang for his buck possible and he'll be upgrading in the future so compatibility with a higher end CPU/GPU later on is important.
Thank you to anyone who takes a look and helps out!
Bumping cause holy shit this got buried instantly.

Sony Xperia Z5
Abandoned.
Went to provider to find owner.
Said they removed their account info from the phone.
How can I use said phone? It has a pin
>>55480498
Flash new rom, you can even just flash sony stock rom and it should be fine.
Idk if this phone has a ''restore to factory settings'' option without going in first, otherwise use that.

Give it back, Jamal.

What is an audio file?
i imagine it's some header data to describe format size etc etc and some binary that gets read and sent to the right hardware if you want to hear it
is this far too simplistic or totally wrong
I'm so sick and fucking tired of the shitty sed and grep regex syntax. So i'm sharing a piece of Java code.import java.io.*;
import java.util.regex.*;
public class Jsed{
public static void main (String args[]) {
Pattern p = Pattern.compile(args[0]);
try {
InputStream in = System.in;
ByteArrayOutputStream out = new ByteArrayOutputStream();
byte[] buf = new byte[4096];
int b;
while ((b = in.read(buf)) != -1) {
out.write(buf, 0,b);
}
Matcher m = p.matcher(new String(out.toByteArray()));
while (m.find()) {
System.out.println(m.group(1));
}
} catch(IOException io){
io.printStackTrace();
}
}
}
This enables you to use Java's Regex system in a pipe. For ex.
thinkpad :: ~/Documents % tree -if | jsed "(.*\d+_\d+_\d+.*\.jpg)"

You love being unemployed, don't you?
This is pretty cool op
I am going to college and I'm building a new computer, these are my current specs. I want to be able to game but it doesn't have to be high end 4k shit. What should I keep and what should I upgrade? I plan on getting a new case and a much bigger storage, if that information is relevant. Will provide more info if necessary.
Getting a new video card would be the biggest upgrade. Your CPU is pretty dated, but if you upgraded to Skylake you'd need a new mobo and new RAM and if you upgraded to something else you'd just be getting another outdated CPU. Everything else looks fine.
CPU - fine as is
RAM - maybe get another stick
GPU - upgrade
HDD - Get a 1TB internal
That's all

I'm 26 and never had a job, I've been looking for work since I was 24 and have done a couple thousand applications and only received 1 job offer that was too far away.
Even Mcdonalds has turned me away dozens of times.
I'm fine making minimum/a bit below minwage, I heard you can make about minimum wage by getting good at Mechnical Turk or whatever, is this true?

how do you even get by? living off others i suppose
>>55480323

Yeah, it's ridiculous.
I am a flabby weak shit, construction would destroy me.
I lived as a caretaker for several years for my now dead grandfather and was given expenses by him, now I'm living with my mom again with no money.
No inheritance really, had lived month to month.
I have food stamps at least to lessen the burden on my mother.

Let's talk windows task manager.
If a program is glitching, or is stuck in full screen, and you want to shut it down, you can't. You literally need to shut down your computer. Why is the task manager only available as a window? It should be in the same form as the Ctl Alt Delete page, which always works.
It's so fucking stupid. I'm really mad.
>>55480278
This is actually a really fair point, I agree with you.
Maybe stop using XP ?
Probably doesn't require a shutdown. If it gets stuck in full screen, you probably can get around it by putting into standby mode (configure to standy with the power button) and back out again.

Anyone had any experience with using a wireless mouse and keyboard in a very crowded 2.4ghz area. This is currently my apartment, as you can see it's a very crowded air space. I'm only about 6ft away.
I didn't notice a difference from when I had it in the back of the computer to the front. I have a USB extension cord. You think If I could elevate the receiver my mouse wouldn't skip around sometimes.
You sound retarded. Don't use wireless mice. Don't use 2.4Ghz routers in an apartment building. Use 5ghz or wire everything via ethernet.
>>55480201
You have luck anon im moving so im literally doing the set up to my shitty arris modem.
put your network in channel 10 and the wireless operation in a single mode. N would be the "best" unless you have AC. G works too but i prefer N for an apartment.
Relocate your router the most centered part of your apartment and on a high place.
if your modem has a specific options for N, configure the operation mode to Greenfield (that way it wont give a fuck about the other networks) and the channel bandwith to either 40 or 20/40Mhz
Thats it...something basic that should do wonders.
I.E. my router is in the center of the house 10cm below the roof, bot antennas are in a 45° and both are 8DBi (costed like 3 bucks).
I can go to the bathrom below the stairs with thick walls and have excellent reception there.
Any recommended place to read about how to make a non shitty home Wi-Fi?
Why do people buy into the western digital meme, they cost more than seagate, are less reliable and cost more than seagate.

So I go to the thrift store, and I find a sealed in box WRT54GSv1 (aka, one of the absolute best of those old legendary blue Linksys routers) for $11
Do you guys think the value of this thing is gonna go up in coming years being sought after by retro tech collectors for being so legendary back in the day, or should I just open it and put DDWRT/OpenWRT on it?
>>55480175
I got one for 5€ like two month ago, after my old one died (because of a shitty power adapter).
I been using them for a wifi bridge for my older computers for 10 years now.
The very first one of those fuckers I got from my school, when they where buying new ones.
>>55480175
>Do you guys think the value of this thing is gonna go up in coming years being sought after by retro tech collectors for being so legendary back in the day, or should I just open it and put DDWRT/OpenWRT on it?
I don't think that they will become valuable if that's what you're asking. They are really common, and it's not like newer wireless standards are not backwards compatible.
>>55480175
It's useless due to being old and obsolete. Unless you are using computers that still use floppy discs, you'll be heavily bandwidth capped even for cable routing.
from the top of my head the wrt54gs has 100mbit as a switch, and about 30-40mbit for routing. But I had a later version, the GSv1 might not even be able to do that much.
