How does /g/ organize its files? It drives me into panic.
I'm not comfortable saving files on my local drive, nor am I comfortable with cloud services. For now I keep everything on an always-inserted flash drive, who I then back up on an external drive. But still files end up EVERYWHERE: on your phone, tablet, in the cloud, flash drives, etc - and sorting that shit out is hell.
And what should you save? Old meme pics from 4chan anno 2006? Old back-ups?
>>55613259
I have a folder of various files, about ~200gb that I keep on 3 PCs. I also have a .7z archive of this folder on a laptop harddrive that I put in a makeshift foam-ductape case to keep in a closet.
When I want to "add" files to this archive, I make it a point to eventually get the files on each archive. Keeping the mirrors updated for me isn't a huge deal because I am not frequently generating data that is completely imperative that I have backed-up. Things like that, IE: old family photos/projects/etc, are already all saved redundantly.
At work, I have a more pragmatic approach in-place. I work at a small medical office and it is important that there be solid redundancy and security. First line of defense is RAID- The server at work uses RAID 1 with 2 SSDs. Now, you shouldn't just rely on RAID- If the PC gets fucked in some catastrophic way, both drives might be fucked. To mitigate against this, and for HIPAA-compliance, I have 3 drives in a rotation that store a PGP-encrypted archive of the SQL database and image data files. Every night, this archive is updated on the currently connected drive. Every monday, I swap a disk with the business owner. He takes this to his residence in a padded container (Off-site back-up, in case the building burns-down). There is another drive I keep in a drawer, for more immediate access in case of a localized failure in the closet. In case a drive get stolen, I can just destroy the PGP private key, and the data will be completely inaccessible unless quantum computing goes big or something.
What works for you is something you'll need to figure out, but I hope my example of what I do personally vs. how I handle data at work gives you an idea of what you can do for data integrity.
Also, with .pgp archives, you could store on cloud storage as long as you keep the private key somewhere. They won't be able to read the data.

re. organizing: here is an example of how the shit I keep backed-up is organized. there are of course sub-folders. the "backup mybook" folder is a complete clusterfuck, but that is what ctrl+f is for.

What's in lost and found?
I only know networking (ccna level) and want to do a Computer Engineering degree at my local University.
The thing is, my programming knowledge is limited (i.e shit) and my math skills are okay. (it's been a long time since I practiced math)
How fucked am I?
The course starts beginning of October

IT major here.
Why the switch? I doubt you'd get a better job unless you live In silicon valley.
>>55613321
I'm in Europe
>Why the switch?
The switch isn't confirmed.
But the degree is sponsored by the government (no debt) and I don't want to be stuck in helpdesk forever

Civil Engineering is better.
Is there a maintained Keepass version for OSX?
KeePass is a broken piece of crap full of security issues.
Use KeePassX.

Can someone please explain this to me.
I am using the VPN provided by Getflix, and it's supposed to encrypt and hide my ISP. I've set it so that my IP address is for the region of Los Angeles in the US.
But when I type in "ip address" on Google, it gives me my public IP address and it traces it back to my actual location. Why is this?
Did I not set the VPN up correctly? The program and the website says that I have. The Getflix website says that I'm from the US, yet the IP address website says otherwise.
>>55613161
Some VPNs have the option to avoid tunneling to servers located within your country. Disable that option and tunnel your entire traffic
>>55614359
Could you possibly guide me through the process of doing that with Getflix?
I can't seem to find the option related to tunneling.
>>55613161
Oh shit! you telling me i might get backtraced by the cyberpolice even though i use a vpn?
Do you/have you used encrypted email service? What has been your experience? Are they safe? Worth it?
There pretty much a waste of time when email encryption has existed for years. Also email is outdated btw
>>55613144
I'm using their paid service just because I like fancy custom email names. couldn't care less about privacy(I don't want my dick-pics on the internet that's about it) because I still have an android phone and gmail
>>55613178
>email is outdated
?
Why can we have a version of Android that could work on all devices without the need to manually port them for each Android device like Windows and Linux does on desktop ? That would be fuckin great for updates on all phones. Is it a driver problem ?
Because manufacturers don't want to support old hardware, so that retards will buy their new phone to run whatever shiny meme shit is available in the latest Android?
>>55613030
Driver one part, NAND storage one part and device tree one part.
Probably.

I just wanted to play vidya with my friends. I now have windows 8.1 industry as its supposedly "bloat free" but 15 minutes into booting the system will freeze for a bit with "rundll32" using all cpu and disk.
I now understand windows is fucking trash, but I'm too stupid to use even the "user friendly" linux os.
considering a macbook pro as it can't mess up because it doesn't have any more freedom than their shitty phones.

What are some useful project ideas that I can work on, in order to build up my portfolio?
Is building a github portfolio even a good idea for future jobs?

PC98 emulator for android so that I can play earlier touhou games on my phone.
make sure to design a good interface for controlling the character and shooting.
Github is a bad idea. It's the 4chan of code hosting - you WILL get trolled and everything you can and will do about it WILL make you look bad.
Try a personal website (max professional) or bitbucket.

More like the Twitter of code hosting. Everybody ignores you.

GNU/Linux does not protect your freedom as a user or developer, BSD does.
GNU/Linux does not make developers rich, BSD does
GNU/Linux does not let you own your work, BSD does
Play with (((Stallman's))) marxist software all you want, when you're ready for a truly free desktop: BSD is waiting.
are we trying to summon bsdfag
Saying you need the source code for the four freedoms is like saying you need a car to have freedom of movement
The GPL should have merely negated IP law and made software, including compiled binaries, a form of protected public domain. No copyright bullshit being used to control people (give us your souuuurce), copyright bullshit being used to truly prevent people from being controlled.
Pfft. Sure BSD help developers rich.
The selected one, that is.
